Today it was time for the obligatory sales presentation and free breakfast that had earned us the accommodation of this holiday with CLC World. Now we already had gone through a couple of hours worth of presentation in Birmingham sometime last year that had earned us this holiday and £50 Marks and Spencer's tokens, so I really didn't see the point of this one. I was expecting a hard sell, so I had my hard and unimpressed face ready before we were picked up from our accommodation. I was rather surprised when we were greeted by a very likeable Irish guy, older than ourselves called Maurice. Now if Maurice's employers are reading this, you need to sort him a decent company car because the vehicle he picked us up in didn't come across as luxury and ... read more

My day ended rather well with a toffee vodka, which is more than I think I can say for Ricardo, my guide, who by the end of the afternoon wouldn't even look at me.... It all started sunny, as I had a good long chat with one of the hotel cats whilst waiting for the tour bus to Gibraltar. And then the cat slapped me but I think it was all a misunderstanding, my Spanish isn't all that good. Once again we were being guided by 'Rushing' Ricardo, and a new bus driver but still named Pedro like yesterday. We met some older ladies who were on the Morocco trip yesterday whose sole reason for visiting Gibraltar was to get cheap fags. They had smoked their way around Tangier and they are now known as the ... read more

Today's thought provoking thoughts include hard hitting questions about bidet usage whilst out doing the daily shopping. Also, genuine fake rolexes, are they really a thing? Read on.... Seeing as we didn't get to bed until after 1am, it was great to get up at 5.30am to go on a pre-booked trip to Morocco. I was worried that weather would stop the trip just as a small flurry of snow stops people going to work in the UK. But surprisingly, it wasn't raining when I got up. We got in a coach with a bunch of other tourists where I promptly fell asleep, missing all the hilarious commentary, not to worry though, Glyn repeated it all to me, nothing was missed out bar the translation in German. Obviously it was pouring when I woke, but I ... read more

Glyn woke with a scream this morning. I meant to wake him gently with a hug but accidentally pulled the covers off him instead. It's easy to get those two confused. Anyway, as a result, we got up at 7am as planned. It wasn't raining at this point, but there was a lot of evidence to prove it hadn't long stopped. Our first stop of the day was the caves at Nerja. These caves do have paintings that are thought be be 20,000 years old, but those parts probably will never be open to tourists. We were given handsets with monotone commentary on the caves, highlighting everything that is boring about them; I did want to know about the caves but didn't want to risk slipping into a coma as I walked around the dark cathedral ... read more

Who actually uses a bidet for washing their backside, in all seriousness? I'm sure it's just an adult in-joke that British parents tell their kids when they pack them off on the school trip to France, in the hope of the teachers relaying to them hilarious anecdotes of stupid things their gullible kids did. Really, bidets are for rinsing the sand off your feet or washing socks. I've not met one person who has admitted to washing their arse in a bidet, and if such a person exists and is reading this, please fess up in the comments section! Moving on... I'm in Andalusia, Spain. Where the rain has been falling on the plain and as far as I can see, everywhere else too. Lots and lots of rain. Real heavy hardcore soaking wet rain. The ... read more

On the minibus taking us to the airport, Glyn and I were sitting next to a Brummie couple who asked if we had seen the lights last night. Sadly, no. They were rather surprised as they had had an excellent show, it was amazing apparently! It turned out that their trip ran a lot later than ours and that the lights had put in an appearance some time after 11pm. This is gutting - I can handle missing them if they didn't happen, but knowing that we were a mere hour or two too early, and that we had been taken back to Rekjavík (with lots of apologies) when the lights were just getting ready, well that is just frustrating! The only way to do the lights for an inexperienced tourist is with a tour. There ... read more

Probably the last thing you want to do in the middle of Iceland in the middle of winter is get soaked by a Geysir and my hubby did just that. He was the only one to do it too. The bigger tragedy is that I missed it. We left the street lights of Reykjavík for the day to go on a coach tour of the Golden Circle. The roads connecting the tiny villages and farms are not lit, but the white glow of the snow brightened the darkness. Quaint churches in the snow would have made for excellent photos had we stopped. Our guide, Elizabeth, had a rather monotone drone and I fell asleep on the coach for the first 90 minutes when we made our first stop at Fridheimar Tomato farm. This family run farm ... read more

Have you ever worried that you might accidentally sleep with your cousin? No? Nor me, but then, I'm not Icelandic. But on a rather isolated island where the population is just 330,000, everyone is related by 6-7 degrees at least, more likely 3-4. So the probability that the guy/gal you have just met at the bar being a relative is of a concern high enough that an app has been developed where two people can download it to their phones and 'bump' phones before they 'bump' each other. However, this hasn't really caught on despite the dangers: Icelanders preferring to use an online genealogical database, 'The Book of Icelanders' instead. Apparently it gets most of its hits on Sunday mornings. This is one of many useful facts of Iceland that I have learned today. The day ... read more

You know those nightmares where you are being chased by a monster and your legs are breeze blocks meaning that you can barely move, let alone run? There's an invisible force pushing you back so hard that you're almost bent over against it just so that you can get one step ahead. This was how it felt to walk around Reykavík a lot of today, getting increasingly more difficult the closer we were to the sea - so naturally we walked to a lighthouse. The day started very dark and was briefly light for a few hours, then continued with the darkness. Flying from Luton at 7.45am, it was getting light, but as we got closer to Iceland, light disappeared and I could see Reykavík twinkling in the twilight through the frosty plane window. We landed ... read more

The language barrier can cause such great comedy moments when using public transport abroad. And so, Glyn, Helen, Andy and i certainly proved this when we found ourselves leaving town and possibly on the way to the airport rather than heading to the Grand Palace! Glyn had shown our taxi driver a picture of it in his guidebook, saying Grand Palace and its name in Thai: Wat Phra Kaew. We'd left soon after breakfast, having waited for Jeff who didn't turn up as promised. Steve and Yiyi were due to leave for a flight to Shanghai and when they left after breakfast, I realised I had missed the chance to say goodbye, so if you're reading this Steve and Yiyi, goodbye, was nice to meet you and I hope you enjoy your time in China!
