From Playa Hermosa we head to Volcan Arenal. The route plan is to take in the Cloud Forest (it is what it sounds like) but this is a gravel road and the recent heavy rains mean it is a no no. Only five people have done it in previous tours and two of them blew their rear shock absorbers. So we climb into the volcano range and the clouds close in and the humidity drops. We ride with Kevin and Julia and stop for lunch at a German owned café / gallery. It looks OK from the road but when we walk through it surrounds a stunning football pitch size lagoon. Howler monkeys are heard in the trees and the variety of brightly coloured birds is huge. Humming birds are feeding on the flowers and are ... read more

Two day off in Antigua are well spent drinking with the locals to celebrate Independence Day. Did you know.... Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras and Panama all share the same Independence Day 15 September 1821. This was only from the Spanish though, they then had to get independent from the Mexicans as well. We sampled the local delight of Aguadiente (picture on the Globebusters blog with new Colombian face hair!) which is US $1 a bottle. We had US $8 worth and its 36% proof - Then on to the obligatory Irish bar, O'Reilly's run by a Norwegian. This was bettered on our last night when Max had a hankering for a Curry and we at at the Pashkoor, and very good it was too. Waiters were Guatemalan and the white chef was from Suffolk - Of course. ... read more

San Miguel Allende is a very beautiful town. Almost Moroccan in style with roof gardens and narrow entrances to opening courtyards with cafés, stalls and shops to explore. However before this we need to get there and the road works means diversions through narrow cobbled (more like rocked) streets in small side towns. Then we need to navigate through San Miguel Allende itself. This took only two attempts. The hotel is indeed an old converted monastery and while basic the rooms surround and large courtyard, now festooned with motorcycles. No luxuries like air conditioning or too much hot water. We wander about the town and head for a recommended restaurant called Mama Mia's, for Pizza. Yes Yes I know but there are only so many tacos, enchiladas and burritos you can have. As Kevin says Mexican ... read more

Four days off in Tucson at the Sheraton, which is extremely well run and surprisingly nice. First day we just chilled. Bit of Laundry, dropped the bike off for its service and then lay by or in the pool avoiding the 40C + heat and sun. In the late afternoon we had a Kevin and Julia meeting to discuss the transition from USA to Mexico and Central America. To get into the Mexican spirit I shaved off my goatee revealing a chin that hasn't seen daylight for 20 years. This left a proper Mexican Zapata mustache We joined the meeting late, chewing on a cigar courtesy of Jeff and wearing dark sunglasses. The new look met with great approval, and has earned me the nickname of The General (pronounced henerarlee). Day two we hired a car ... read more

So out from Cody and the Rodeo and a dry day to Vernal. More stunning scenary that changes frequently with tiered rock outcrops all at thirty degrees to the horizon, looking like huge slices of cake, lakes and resevoirs, canyons and gorges of terracotta rock. Vernal is another one horse town but the local council obviously decided to spend the entire budget on flowers. A properly hot (38.5C) day as we arrived at Vernal and I was first in the pool at the Dinosaur Inn! Neighbouring rooms were occupied by four guys coming back from the BMW Beartooth Rally. Three were brothers who all lived in different states. Two old air cooled and a couple of vaguely newer bikes. Very nice chaps. Wandered down the road to another (!) local bar with a pool table. Food ... read more

Leaving Jasper in small groups, as the park passes require us to travel together, we detour off to Mount Edith Clavell. Named for a WW1 Nurse shot for helping prisoners escape despite the fact she nursed the wounded for both sides. On from there down the lovely windy 93A, to the Athabascar falls. Very impressive falls through broken quartz rocks. And then on again to the equally impressive Ice Fields Parkway, although we didn't see much of it with the rain and overcast day. Tonight is Radium Hot Springs, which conjures up visions of an American version of Bath. Nice enough town, with strong German influence (we didn't eat at the Salzburg) but the springs themselves appeared more 1950's open air pool than anything. The motel is very alpine chalet strewn with flower boxes and very ... read more

Or Should that be Yukon not be serious... Anyway the tale moves on. What can we say about the Yukon. It's not smokey anymore. The scenery is vast, huge, enourmous. Its really difficult to try and explain it. Suffice to say in two days we rode from Haines Junction to Bell II Lodge (Really a Heli Ski'ing resort but this is the summer) we had covered 775 miles or Lands End to John O'Groats. The Yukon is slightly more than three times as large as the UK and has a population of 30,000 or about a third of Jersey! We passed Whitehorse the capital (population 20,000) and stayed outside Watson Lake (Third largest town population 750). Big days riding that were very tranquil. We spent all of the day from Nugget bear spotting to no avail. ... read more

So here we are in Canada after only 7 days of the trip. How did we get from Anchorage Alaska to Haines Junction Canada. The silliest route possible really. But first things first. A week ago our "official" send off was provided by Team Pterodactyl, a Anchorage Bike Group, consisting of lots of BMW GS riders. Fortuitously at least one member of Team P are members of the Alaska Machine Gun Club. So a short ride north of Anchorage to a shooting range and we were met with the biggest variety of gun hardware any Brit not in the forces will have seen in a long time. Magnum 45, AK47, M16, M60, Browning 1919, SA80, Uzi's and the daddy a 50 Calibre rifle! All live ammo resulted in fantastic fun for us non gun owning Brits. ... read more

Ok So don't get used to this amount of blogging but... First ride out yesterday and all went well. We rode to Whittier through the longest tunnel in North America which is just 2.5 miles! However it is single lane and shared with trains, which makes it interesting. We went off and did a Glacier Cruise and wanted to share a couple of images. First day out and we have seen Bears fishing, Sea Otters, Bald Eagles and a whale, or in my case a big splash. PLUS The bluest glaciers which obligingly cracked off and crashed into the sea. What a first day out that was, but does set the bar pretty high. ... read more

Well we have arrived in Anchorage after two great days in Chicago. Its a lovely city and gave us a chance to relax after the 8 hour flight and 6 hour time difference. Then onto Anchorage - 6 hour flight and 3 hour time difference! The bike is here all in one piece and now fueled and set up ready to go. To get in the mood today we are off on a glacier cruise and whale watching. This is "just down the road". Translation - About an hour and a half away through the longest tunnel in North America that is shared with Trains and is a single carriageway. So we have to be there for our turn. Your have to ride between the rails and apparently you are not allowed to play chicken with ... read more
