The five hour bus journey from Puerto Natales to El Calafate was surprisingly bearable despite none of us getting any meaningful sleep last night. After dinner and beers last night the 4 of us bundled ourselves into the back of an affable local's car and were escorted to the local 80's disco, wonderful! We had already enjoyed a fair amount of the local brew in a fabulous bar but it just seemed like the right thing to do at the time. After paying the entry fee of $5US each we made our way into what looked like a church hall. The bourbon and cokes were poured into the plastic coke cups with ecclesiastical enthusiasm. At this stage we didn{t even mind wading our way into the gents facility such were our high spirits. At 5am the ... read more

The catamaran from Refugio Paine Grande leaves at 1230 so we made an 0800 pre dawn departure from Ref. Grey this morning. In the gloomy light head torches were necesary to negotiate the initial rocky upward trail. After a couple of hours we caught up with the 2 American girls who had left even earlier than us. Jon caught a snippet of their conversation which was apparently an intense discussion/debate on plant biology in the Torres region. On sharing this with us we all pondered on how this compared with our own conversations over the last few days. Certainly the 3 of us have also had some searching and insightful discussions during our trekking days. Such curiosities we have pitched to each other include 'what's the difference between a puddle and a lake?' and 'when does ... read more

Refugio Paine Grande is a modern refugio with a large bar and restaurant both affording superb views across Lago Pehoe. Next stop is Refugio Grey which is a much smaller refuge on the lakeside of Lago Grey. Large chunks of ice break away from the main glacier and wash up on the shoreline here. The undulating route brought us to the refuge for lunch around 2pm. After lunch we figured we would try and head north a little further and take a closer look at the glacier. Everyone hikes at their own pace, it's the only way to do things really. Up until now it has worked fine, Marco and Jon would shoot off ahead and generally wait for me at strategic points. Marty would be in front of all of us so generally after breakfast ... read more

After a quick check outside, Marty returned to our dorm early this morning to deliver the excellent news that the skies were crystal clear and it looked as if we had hit the jackpot with the best weather day for the longest and most scenic walk of the whole trek. Today´s trek would take us upwards into the French Valley where spectacular mountain views along with Autunm colours in the forest would be encountered. It soon became apparent that the clear skies overnight had resulted in a nasty layer of ice forming on a large section of rock & boulder whic we needed to cross. With caution we got through this ok and were rewarded with spectacular views of Cerro Paine Grande across the valley to our left. We saw at first hand 2 massive avalanches ... read more

Today´s short walk has taken us from Hotel Las Torres along the banks of Lago Nordenskjold to Refugio Los Cuernos. After yesterday´s exertions the generally flat route was very welcome as was the dry conditions. I also fell over just the once today whilst attempting a temperature check of Lago Nordenskjold. This dangerous manauver with the destabilising effect of a full back pack resulted in the inevitable outcome of being dumped on my arse, much to the mirth of my trekking companions. Los Cuernos is a basic refugio where we are in a dorm wih an interesting chap called Marty who has broken his return journey to Australia to complete the W trek. Marty is returning from a 4 month spell in Antarctica where has has been acting as a guide for British scientists from the ... read more

I think one of our fellow Fantastico Sur customers has gone mental on Tomato Fettucine and made a break for the main hotel restaurant. This morning we found a table barricade between us and the hotel breakfast buffet area. Refugio customers dining with high yielding Hosteria customers is clearly a very undesirable scenario. Today we took on the demanding hike to the Mirrador (or viewpoint) Las Torres. The Torres (or Towers) of Paine stand at 3400m and were first climbed by Chris Bonington in 1963. The weather today has been overcast with several short showers which somewhat diminished the views on the approach. It took 4 hours to reach Campamento Torres which sits at the base of a very steep bolder strewn slope to the Mirrador. Marco then surged ahead leaving me trailing way behind. Jon ... read more

There are a number of accomodation options in the National Parkincluding camping (no thanks), refugios's (hostel style mountain lodges) and hosteria's (outrageously expensive hotels). Refugio's are a reasonable option as they remove the need to carry your own camping equipment and food etc yet keep costs under reasonable control. We secured accomodation at Refugio Las Torres a couple of months ago but Fantastico Sur who operate the refugio have closed the lodge a week early (we are arriving at the very end of the trekking season). The good news is that we have been re-accomodated (at no extra cost) at the Hosteria Las Torres, wonderful! We should therefore be pretty comfortable for the nest 2 nights considering rates here start at around $500US per person per night! Being a Fantastico Sur customer seems to carry with ... read more

After connecting in Madrid and Santiago we finally arrived at Punta Arenas airport around 6pm on Sunday evening. With over 30 hours travelled we were now only a 3 hour drive from our first overnight stop in Puerto Natales the gateway to Torres Del Paine National Park. Marco met us at the airport as planned having travelled a day earlier. He had enjoyed 24 hours in Punta Arenas where conditions were wet and windy. Indeed Marco's last text message gave me and Jon some idea of what to expect, 'Mate, it's cold it's wet their's no one around, it's like the Falkland Islands here'. Our accomodation at Erratic Rock 2 is clean and comfortable. It's now 2200 and afte a quick repack we'll get some sleep and be ready for the 0730 bus into the National ... read more

Hello everybody. Well it's that time again to get stuck into some serious travel adventures again. Right now I'm at Heathrow terminal 3 where I will shortly be boarding an Iberia flight to Madrid and connecting onwards to Santiago and finally Punta Arenas, southern Chile. From there it's a 3 hour bus journey to Puerto Natales which will be the gateway to the Torres Del Paine National Park. Mr Webb-butler is currently enroute having departed last night and all being well he will meet up with me and Jon in Punta Arenas in the early hours of Monday morning UK time. This is a rapid fire 3 week tour of South America and I will attempt to keep you updated throughout. We will visit 4 countries and travel approximately 22,000 miles. I believe the circumference of ... read more

First class travel on Indian Railways is the way forward. Air conditioning, a dedicated door locakable compartment, bedsheets, blankets and a full 6 and a half foot sleeping couch. You are also excused from the traditional Indian scrumage when boarding and alighting. Mcleod Ganj is an interesting place, positioned at an altitude of 1800m in the Indian Himalayan foothills it brings much welcome cooler conditions. In 1949 China invaded Tibet, 1.2 million Tibetans were killed in the ensuing battle and resistance campaign. Ten years later it was no longer considered safe for the 14th Delai Lama to remain in Chinese occupied Tibet. He fled over the mountains to Northern India and settled in Dharamasala (a few kilometers from Mcleod) where the Tibetan government in exile is now located. Fleeing Tibetans made Dharamasala and Mcleod Ganj their ... read more
