Saturday: Arrive at the docks at 6:00 AM. The view coming in – with the sun rising over the Bosphorus bridge – was wonderful, lighting up Topkapi and the Sultanamet mosques. We exited the ship and transfered to the Pera Palace Hotel where we dropped off our luggage and went out into the surrounding Beyoglu District. After a few hours we returned to the hotel and sat for awhile waiting for our room to be ready. As we sat on the veranda John managed to spill an entire glass of ginger ale on Peggy, leading to a change of clothing prior to getting into the room. We had an unremarkable lunch near the “tunel” cable car that comes up the hill from the Galata Bridge and the Sulanamet street trolley. Upon return to the hotel we ... read more

Friday – At Sea: As we are at sea from Kusadasi to Istanbul we have one whole day traveling through the Dardanelle Straights and the Sea of Marmara. We approached the straights around 10:00 AM and could see a very large monument on the European side commemorating the battle of Gallipoli where over 250,000 soldiers lost their lives during the First World War. The announcement by the Windstar staff about the battle made the event sound much more balanced than it was. And to be honest, the Turkish government has gone to great lengths over the last 20 years to make the fierce, and at times atrocious, loss of life all more like “brothers” from the point of view of the horrors of war. In fact it was a poorly planned and executed allied push to ... read more

Thursday - Kusadasi: We are clearly getting into the mood, as we got up late for breakfast. We had chosen not to visit Ephesus as the crowds can be extensive and we wanted to have a quiet day. As the ship was at the dock in the middle of the city, we simply walked off into a barrage of vendors. It is very difficult to be polite when each shop ask one of a series of questions: “Please come into my shop, it is the best in the city.” “Where are you from, let’s talk?” “We love Wind Star, come into our shop.” “You are missing the best shop in the city.” “If you buy something I will help you find the ship.” “Just take a look.” “Are you a cowboy? Where is your horse?” “You ... read more

Wednesday - Bodrum: Not the early birds today. Casual breakfast and then into the launch/tender ashore in Turkey. We walked through town to the castle built in the 16thcentury by the Knights of St John and abandoned when Rhodes fell. It is a lovely castle, brought back by the town very diligently. It has many rooms and a fortified harbor. But the most interest part of the castle is the Underwater Archeological Museum. Several wrecks – one from the Minoan era with glass on board and one from the Roman era with many amphora – are highlighted with actual scenes from the finds and recreations of the location itself. Very well done and interesting. After completing the walk through the museum – and avoiding the mess left by the peacocks (dirty but lovely birds) – we ... read more

Tuesday - Rhodes: What a perfect day to visit Rhodes: nice wind but not too hot, clear skies and interesting sites. We had some excitement arriving at the dock as the wind was against us and we had to very carefully ease into the space. We had some helpf from a little tug, Herokles 3, which managed to push right up against the portholes of our cabin. Peggy heard a noise and looked out the porthole to see a gentleman with a cigarette about four feet away! Once settled we enjoyed a fine breakfast. Then we left the ship early – around 8:15 – and walked into the old city … which was deserted as nothing opens before 10:00. Except the Palace of the Grand Masters. This was where the Templar Knights settled and built fortifications ... read more

Monday – Santorini/Ancient Arkratiri: Up early to enjoy the arrival in the caldera of Santorini. Amazing place … except for the many huge ships that come into port. We were chased the last few miles by a ship the size of San Francisco with a mere 5,000 people onboard. Their arrival did not dampen the beauty of the place … and the history! Amazing to think that this huge area, surrounded by islands, was once a huge volcano that totally disappeared in a massive explosion 3,600 years ago. What remains is hundreds of feet of debris, mostly what was mined here for many years: pumice. Since the caldera is so deep we were not able to anchor so for the next six or seven hours the ship slowly moved back and forth depositing people on shore ... read more

Sunday – Mykanos/Ancient Delos: John was up with the sun, watching as the ship slowly came to anchor off the town of Mykanos at 7:00 AM. The sea was dead calm (according to the guide later this is extremely unusual) and the weather most pleasant. After a nice breakfast outside on the deck we got a briefing from the Shore Director about our tour of Delos and then embarked on a shuttle boat (the emergency boats in fact) to the port to await the ferry that would take us to the island of Delos. We met our island guide, a very well-spoken woman who grew up in England with a Greek father and came back to Mykanos and fell in love with the island and history. She was extremely knowledgeable but more than that she helped ... read more

Saturday: We slept in … until 7:00 AM when we realized we had to be packed and have our bags out in front of our door for pickup at 9:00. We made the time and then checked out of the hotel and wandered the streets, homeless and alone! Actuyally we visited a replica of one of the temples – the colors were beautiful, vibrant and alive – and went to one of the biggest stores in Athens (Attica) and looked at everything we didn’t need. We did stop for a coffee at a nice street café and had a quick bite at a café on the main square. It was a little quiet as the transportation strike was still underway. Everyone who is responsible for driving or handling public transport was on holiday. We had no ... read more

Friday: John left early to take a last visit to the Acropolis, walking through the Plaka and Agoura and up the Sacred Way to the main entrance. Peggy relaxed and then visited the Acropolis Museum again to take in all the beauty. We met up late morning and walked back into the Plaka to find additional gifts for the family. Visited a nice jewelry store where Peggy got a little charm for her bracelet and chatted at length with the manager, Stavros, who we had met a few days ago. He and his family have been in business in Athens for 45 years, which puts it’s birth at the last visit Peggy had to Athens when she did her junior year abroad. The shop may have changed but the byzantine and Hellenistic designs have not. And ... read more

Thursday: Not up early today … but well rested and joining the tourist world at 9:00 rather than 7:00. Another nice breakfast overlooking the Acropolis. We have new neighbors on our floor, someone who (according to the concierge) is not very important … but has TWO bodyguards outside their room! These are not your ordinary well-dressed plainclothes folks but more like grizzled musclemen in T-shirts. We are very polite as we sneak by on our way to our room. Out the front door and into the day, walking down toward the Plaka and Monistiraki Square. We stopped for some small gifts for the ladies and then proceeded to the Flea Market and all the “junk” being offered, some of which was interesting but most of which could be thrown in the garbage. Still it was fun ... read more
