Wednesday: This is museum day! We both got up early and ate a quick breakfast before catching a taxi to the National Archaeological Museum, which was created to hold all the fabulous finds from around the country. Every single item is exquisite and speaks to the breadth of culture of the Greeks. We started with the Cycladic Period ( Truly the National Museum was spectacular. We continued through the Mycenaean Period ( There was even a special exhibit of the finds on the island of Santorini. A village fully evacuated in 1525 BC just prior to the volcano blowing up, leaving behind all their household goods as if it were yesterday. Covered in thick ash until the 1970s it has become quite the find and a great education on the same level as Pompeii or Herculaneum. ... read more

Tuesday: John was up at dawn and walking the area, starting with the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of the Parliament Building. We met up for breakfast on the roof of the hotel with a wonderful spread of foods and THREE cappuccinos. Since it was a holiday none of the museums were open so we went on a shopping trip to the Plaka, starting with the areas just under the Acropolis and proceeding to those shops near the center of the city. We found lots of little gifts for the family and friends. We also visited a jeweler and got a little education on how to work gold and design jewelry. Of course they wanted to sell us everything (“we need to stay in business so everything is ... read more

Monday: As mentioned in yesterday’s posting, we arrived on Easter so nothing was open. And it turns out that the government has selected 3 May as the workday holiday tied to Easter. So nothing will be open on Tuesday. No government offices and NO archeological sites! This means our plan of having time in Mycenae, Epidaurus and Napflion are being crunched into one day: Monday 2 May. We are on holiday and prefer to take things slowly with careful, educated steps. So we decided to cancel our visit to Mycenae and focus on Delphi and then return to Athens. It was a sad decision but appropriate considering all the things we want to do in Athens. To get things moving we met our guide for Delphi at 8:30 AM and were up on the hillside and ... read more

Sunday: John was up early to say goodbye to Aggie and Roger as they took off for Iran and the Society of Asian Arts tour. Then we hung out at the hotel early morning with Memhet the owner, chatting about the states and his view of the economy. He very generously gave us presents as we departed for the airport. What a wonderful host and we look forward to hosting him in San Francisco later in the year. After some difficulties with getting through the airport we boarded our plane and were whisked 536 km to Athens where we were met by Spiros, our driver and guide for the next few days. Full of information and energized at every turn, we drove the two hours to Delphi and our hotel, the Nidimos. John took a walk ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Marmara » Istanbul » Sultanahmet April 30th 2016

Saturday: Sadly we were kept up by a baby crying until 12:30 AM. Sleep was fitful so John got up and went for a sunrise walk down to the ferry terminal at Eminonu. He saw the first cruise ship we have sighted. Our host at the hotel tells us that the norm is two or three ships a day but many of the big cruise lines have cancelled Istanbul as a port-of-call altogether! Shocking. After a warming breakfast and conversation with the hotel’s owner, Mehmet, we rested before meeting friends Aggie and Roger and going to the famous Chora Church with its unsurpassed mosaics. We ogled them for an hour or more, running into Carol, Steve and Connie from the Asian Art Museum. The five of them are on their way tomorrow to Iran for a ... read more

Friday: Our next door neighbor at the hotel had a small child who cried when they returned from dinner at 11:00 PM, so we did not sleep too well. Up for a great breakfast on the rooftop and a long conversation with the owner of the hotel. A very intelligent and quick individual who understands the economy and has done well in a HUGE downturn due to terror fears amongst tourist nations. He noted that he dropped his prices (we benefited tremendously) while other hotels kept their summer season price structure. The result is 80% occupancy for this hotel and 20% for many others, with a norm of around 80-90% in other years. Very sad. We saw the results of the downturn in tourism everywhere, with no lines at the Aya Sofia or crowds at the ... read more

Thursday: John got up early – 5:30 – and went for a walk down to the Eminonu ferry terminal area to take pictures of the sun coming up on the Bosphorus. It was a little like a salmon going upstream as everyone was coming the other way to their work (the Grand Bazaar opens at 8:00 AM). What a glorious day it was, not a cloud in the sky and everything right with our world. Not that everything was right, as there was a bombing on Wednesday in Bursa, about three hours by ferry and car from Istanbul. Sadly the bombing was at their magnificent mosque but only the bomber was killed. John ended up have a couple of interesting conversations with shopkeepers and folks at the hotel about the impact these bombings are having on ... read more

Tuesday/Wednesday: Excited and enthusiastic we arrived early for the flight, which was delayed more than one hour leaving San Francisco. The fun of it was that we – meaning the crowd of folks scheduled on the flight – moved gates twice, each time getting to a higher number – 95, 97, 101. There was some fear that the plan was for us to walk to Istanbul in stages, but that proved to be untrue as we boarded, settled in and took off for our 12 hour 15 minute flight. Peggy slept most of the way while John watched all the movies he would never buy but was curious about. Peggy made a number of friends with the crew (a crew of 18 for this Boeing 777) by asking them to help her with her Turkish. The ... read more

First thing, we got ourselves together – baggage and all – so that we could move out to an airport hotel for the night. After breakfast and checking out we took a nice walk around the central area -- looking at all the shops (we got a map that showed EVERY high end shop), ending up at the Rinascente department store’s rooftop restaurant. It overlooks the Duomo and you could see the people climbing up onto the Duomo’s roof. The food was good and we casually enjoyed ourselves while watching the ever changing scenery of people and the Duomo. Then we picked up a ride out to the airport hotel late in the afternoon where we settled in for a relaxing evening. Last night in Italy. We have enjoyed our trip tremendously and here are our ... read more
