I haven’t written much so here’s an update. Carol arrived in MX on the 3rd of July and I took her to the airport in MX Mon. She spent the first week resting and getting acquainted with Cuernavaca and it didn’t take long for her to realize as I did quickly that Cuernavaca isn’t the town for us. In spite of the fact my host family couldn’t be nicer and they’re treating me so well, the city is large, filthy, loud and chaotic and doesn’t have the charm and history that Oaxaca has. We of course enjoyed our time together and she finally felt secure enough to visit the most tranquil areas on her own while I was in class. The only weekend she had here, we went to Taxco one day and Tepoztlan the ... read more

I spent the day in an incredible scenic little puebla about 30 minutes away from Cuernavaca called Tepoztlan. It has a reputation as a center of power-like Sedona Az so it does have an element of tourism but it’s so charming, that’s easy to overlook. The market is very Mexican with an abundance of cheap food of all kinds readily available. Around the center of town, there’s an outdoor market with lots of handmade things but also lot’s of the usual crap. I visited the little museum in town where there are many incredible pre-Columbian artifacts, and then walked the town a little more and came upon a very nice little café with an upstairs eating area with a nice view of the mountains and the pyramid on top. I actually had hibiscus tacos with guacamole, ... read more

Pues, es mi segunda semana aqui and I’ve scarcely spoken English since I’ve been here except with family and those students who are still very new to Spanish. Overall I’m having a good time speaking full tilt Espanol with the taxistas, maestros, and especially my host family who couldn’t be lovelier and accommodating! I’m eating more here than I eat at home! I took the bus to Taxco this past weekend and didn’t speak a word of English until 9 Sun evening after the families incredible father’s day dinner. That’s when I was finally able to call home and talk with my girls. Taxco is a sweet little town in a charming setting but is also a huge tourist magnet so it’s very occupied with traffic. Speaking of traffic-if there are crazier drivers in the world ... read more

My first day of school went very well after getting their through the typically chaotic Mexican traffic in the busy AM's. Something funny on the way in that a "camioncito"-pickup truck, full of plastic trunks filled with iced down chickens, lost two trunks so there was ice and chicken in the street. One of the trabajadors got out of the truck, picked it all up and put it back in the trunks, through them back onto the truck and off to market they went!! Nothing goes to waste here!!! The school is beautiful, the classes are lively, I’m the old guy and most of the young ones would rather revert back to English when not in class-not me! I’ve spent every day since arrival talking non-stop in Spanish with everyone! My host family is wonderful and ... read more
