29 July, 2013 Yesterday morning we drove from Eastport, Maine, to Calais, where we crossed the border into St. Stephen, NB. Those last few miles of US 1 along the north coast of Maine are pretty rough going. From St. Stephens we drove up NB Hwy 2, a very nice 4 lane through the forests of New Brunswick. If it weren’t for the occasional town, you’d think you were in the wilderness. We drove down Hwy 114 toward Fundy National Park and it was like déjà vu all over again. First came the road construction signs, then the rough-patched pavement ended, then loose gravel. Oh no, not another adventure road! But the construction zone was only 12 kilometers (that’s how they talk up here, in kilometers and liters.) Once we got into the national park, the ... read more

27 July, 2013 It started raining Thursday night and rained all night Thursday, all day Friday and all of Friday night. But this morning was sunny and bright. Clouds moved in and out all day, but by late afternoon, most of the clouds were gone. Due to Friday’s rain, we mostly sat indoors, except when we went to the Walmart in Ellsworth to stock up on groceries. Friday morning I paid bills and took care of that chore. Friday night’s rains were more of the drizzly sort, but the trees would become loaded with rain and then the water would blow out of them onto the roof. It sounded like out-of-sync rain. Today we followed US 1 north, which up here is called the Coastal Highway. I guess it hasn’t been the Dixie Highway for many, ... read more

25 July, 2013 Tuesday morning we left Plymouth and drove north on Hwy 25 until it turned into I-495. We then enjoyed the relatively light traffic on I-495 as it bowed west of Boston and we followed it until it ended at I-95, not far from the New Hampshire State Line. The morning started out muggy-hot and overcast, but it turned to rain before too long. We slogged through rain mixed with fog with poor visibility at times. But as I said, the traffic was fairly light and no one was driving crazy. In New Hampshire and Maine I-95 is a toll road, but the toll was not expensive, even pulling a trailer. The weather cleared by late afternoon and we stopped for the night in Poland Spring, Maine, at a very pretty campground. We did ... read more

22 July, 2013 You know, sometimes just the name of a place will create a mental image of that place, even if you’ve never been there. Or maybe it’s a place you read about in a book and you picture it a certain way. Well, I had a picture of Cape Cod in my imagination, but it wasn’t a whole like the reality of the place. We drove to Cape Cod this morning expecting to see beaches all along the way, but that is not what you see. You don’t even get a glimpse of the ocean or the bay for more than 30 miles. There are some ponds, and you can take side roads off of Highway 6, but you still may not see much. Even on roads with names like “Ocean View Drive” you ... read more

21 July, 2013 On Friday we left Dexter, NY, and drove south then east past the Adirondacks and through the Mohawk Valley and into Massachusetts. We wandered some backroads in western Mass until we found our way to E. Otis, MA. On Saturday we drove around Springfield, MA, then south into Rhode Island and then out again before finally finding Sandy Pond Campground in Plymouth, MA. Only it isn’t. It isn’t in Plymouth, but 20 miles south. We have discovered that Massachusetts roads change names and numbers randomly. And some people who give directions don’t know north from south on a regular basis. By the way, Rhode Island was my 49th state, so whoo-hoo for me. We met some very nice people in the next campsite at Sandy Pond and they gave us very good directions ... read more

18 July, 2013 Cindy and Alex picked us up a little before 10 this morning and we went to their boat docked in Alex Bay. This was our first glimpse of the St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands area. It is absolutely gorgeous there. We rode out into the river moving between the American and the Canadian side. You have to have a chart to know the difference or the years of experience on these waters that they have. We skimmed along downriver for a few miles, then saw a familiar-looking trawler anchored. As we got closer and Alex slowed down we could see our friends Rob and Sue waving at us. We met them in the Keys, too, same as Cindy and Alex. Rob, Alex and Kerry played softball together and Sue, Cindy and ... read more

17 July, 2013 Kerry found a shortcut. I could stop there, but you know I won’t. Kerry studied the map before leaving Jonestown, PA, and decided to take a shortcut to get to Watkins Glen, NY. We turned off the interstate onto a pretty country road. A mile later we saw a sign “fresh oil and chips.” Okay, so they’re working on the road surface, no big deal. The next sign says 10% grade next 2 miles. Hmm. Here we go again. We wound and curved and climbed and dove through some really beautiful farm country in the Susquehanna River Valley area. The downhill grades varied from 9% to 11% and the hairpin turns go without saying. Of course for every downhill there is an equal or steeper uphill. When we finally crossed the Susquehanna River ... read more

15 July, 2013 Sunday morning we left Chester Frost and drove north on I-75, east on I-40, then north again on I-81. Doesn’t that sound boring? Interstates are fairly dull (not exciting like stump grinders, but then we are fairly easily entertained.) We decided to get off the interstate and go east to the Blue Ridge Parkway and camp for the night at the Peaks of Otter campground. The exit I planned for us to take for the road I wanted us to drive was not there. It was on the state of Virginia’s official road map and on our official road atlas, but not on I-81. So we took the next exit, which was for a minor “all weather” road that was at least twice as far as the road I preferred. So, anyway, the ... read more

13 July, 2013 We are back on the road, this time heading north to cooler (we hope) climes. We left home on Friday morning and had a fairly uneventful drive to Chattanooga. As you know, uneventful is, to us, a good thing. There was plenty of traffic, both cars and trucks on the interstates, but most drivers were minding their manners. The only smudge on our shiny day was the 50 minute pit stop in Manchester, where we stopped for gas and lunch. At the gas stop, we were blocked in while the driver that pulled in in front of us went inside to use the facilities. But that was okay, we weren’t in any hurry. At Mc-you-know-who’s we waited and waited while they chased down the cow (or whatever) for our burgers. I think the ... read more

Tuesday, 12 March, 2013 Last Tuesday’s softball game was our last, and we’ll miss all our friends there. We got lots of hugs afterwards. We went to lunch at Burdine’s with Alex and Cindy after the game . We had fully intended to spend more time with them this trip, but that just didn’t work out. On Wednesday we packed up and drove to Miami Springs to my mother’s house. I got started on her tax return and got it finished on Thursday morning. While I was working away on Wednesday evening I heard sprinklers running, but assumed it was the neighbor’s. When Kerry came inside from smoking, he commented on the sprinklers and asked who turned them on. I realized then that we had left windows open on the camper. Our pillows and bed got ... read more
