It was Sunday morning quiet as we drove through Deming heading north up Hwy 180. We had been told by several people that we needed to see City of Rocks State Park twenty-some miles to the north. They weren’t kidding, it was spectacular with great boulders tumbled together in a fairly flat valley. And the cool thing was the campsites were tucked among the rocks. It was mostly dry camping (no hookups) but they had a few sites with hookups, but they were out in the open. It is definitely a place we’d like to come back and camp. At one campsite there was a female long-eared owl in a nest high in a rock cavity. We looked for the male, who is normally nearby, but never spotted him. From there we traveled on to Silver ... read more

It’s Cinco de Mayo and my 61st birthday. Celebrate! I had half a margarita after supper, but it head right to my went. We slept in this morning, then Kerry cooked us a nice breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and hash browns. After breakfast Kerry and Gena went for a hike up the side of the mountain looking for rocks. Bob and I stayed in camp, catching up on blogs and relaxing. Later this afternoon we drove into Spring Canyon SP, just a few miles down the road. It is a beautiful park with majestic rocks and a 17% grade on the entrance road. When we came back I fixed birthday/cinco de mayo fajitas that were quite tasty. Then we went out to watch the sun set and the Super Moon rise. Beautiful sights. I was ... read more

After a quick stop at Walmart, we left Artesia and drove west on Hwy 82, through dry, scrubby and dusty land. It was like this for 40 or 50 miles before finally getting hilly. We drove through James Canyon, where the valleys became greener, to Cloudcroft at 8,600+ ft. There we got our first glimpses of the white sands in the distance. West of Cloudcroft the road wound down at a 6% downgrade for 16 miles. We stopped at a scenic overlook about halfway down to admire the views and let the brakes cool. Once down on flat land again, we drove through Alamogordo to White Sands National Monument. We saw lots of dust devils again today, but they were white due to the white sands. After driving through the dunes, it was back on the ... read more

As we travel west, the landscape is changing. It’s getting hillier and there are some mesas in the distance. We’re seeing more cactus and yucca plants and they are in bloom. There is far less traffic on the highway, too. West of Abilene it’s getting drier and the trees are shorter. Near Sweetwater we see the first of the big wind turbines on the vast wind farms. Today is certainly a good day for generating electricity as the wind has been blowing steadily all day. Poor Milo (Gena and Bob’s dog) got into sand spurs at a rest area and they had to pick probably 200 of the stickers out of his fur. Once past Hobbs, New Mexico, the oil wells are becoming more numerous. In places the skyline is cluttered with the pumps and the ... read more

Well to get the travelblog to publish I had to switch back to Internet Explorer. So yesterday’s blog is published. Now on to today. We left Hot Springs and travelled west on I-30 through Texarkana to Dallas. In Dallas we made a wrong turn and were heading south on I-35E before finally getting onto I-20. The trip through Dallas and Fort Worth was not as bad as anticipated. The traffic moved and most of the drivers were fairly polite. We reached the campground in Weatherford with only one wrong turn and a slight detour. Gena and Bob pulled in 10 or 15 minutes after we did and are parked next to us. We sat outside for a while enjoying the breezes before heading to Walmart for supplies. Supper was brats and potato salad with huckleberry pie ... read more

We are on the road again, this time heading west for the Pacific Coast. We drove as far as Hot Springs, Arkansas and are camped for the night in the Gulpha Gorge Campground in the Hot Springs National Park. Kerry is thrilled to get half price camping in the national parks with his oldtimer’s pass. This is the only national park that is in a city. We have been to the Visitor Center which is in one of the old bath houses. We toured the Fordyce Bathhouse and walked along Bathhouse Row where folks have been coming to partake of the healing waters for 200 years or longer. Several of the old bathhouses are still in use and you can enjoy the baths, get a massage, or just drink the waters, which are available to fill ... read more

Friday morning we left Suwannee River State Park and travelled west to Tallahassee to see my Aunt Suzie, who is not really my aunt, but has been friends with my mother since they were in second grade. She’s always been Aunt Suzie to me. We got to her street and discovered the street was closed, so we drove around the block to see if we could get through to her house. The city was digging a big hole in the street to get to the sewer, but allowed us to get past. It was so good to visit with Aunt Sue, after not seeing her in 40 years or more. We visit some on Facebook and have talked on the phone a time or two, but a good face to face chat was wonderful. We didn’t ... read more

Tuesday morning we left Blue Spring State Park and drove to Hontoon Island State Park, which we though was only about 10 miles out of our way. We had tied up to their dock overnight last spring when we cruised the St. Johns River. They were out of patches last year, so we thought we just pop in and snag a patch. The book says it’s 6 miles from Deland, but it seems farther and there are twists and turns until you think you’ll never get there. Once there, you stand on the dock and wait for the boat to come pick you up and take across the river to the island. All that for a little patch, but it made for a few laughs and a memorable day. From there we drove to St. Augustine ... read more

A week since our last blog. Shame on me. Kerry enjoyed his last softball game at Boot Key on Tuesday morning. Then after goodbyes to our Marathon friends, it was back north to Miami Springs. We stayed with my mom until Saturday morning; she and I enjoyed some great Skip-Bo games. Friday I did her income tax return, and now that’s done. Thank goodness! Saturday we drove to Lake Worth and set up at John Prince County Park. We went to our niece, Deanna’s, where we had a nice visit with Dee, her brother, Jim, and her daughter Kristen and fiancé, Will. We always have a great time with all of them. Sorry we couldn’t make it to Will’s polo match on Sunday afternoon. Maybe next trip. On Sunday we met my childhood friend, Carol Immerfall-Fralick, ... read more

Friday was another lazy Keys day. We slept late then dawdled over breakfast before going to the old railroad bridge at Bahia Honda. The water was beautiful and from the bridge you could see most of the island and parts of the Seven Mile Bridge in the distance. We went down to Loggerhead beach, where the water was calmer than the last few days, but the sea grass was 2’ deep on the beach, making it a bit ugly. We went to the snack bar and cooled off with popsicles before driving down to Sandspur Beach at the northern end of Bahia Honda Key. It, too, was covered in sea grass, but the breeze was nice coming off the water. We sat in the shade of a picnic pavilion and enjoyed the fresh air, the gorgeous ... read more
