Africa » Tanzania » North December 1st 2016

We were sad to leave Peru; our time flew by as it always does! But we were excited to get to Tanzania. This leg of the trip required setting a new personal record for longest series of flights, which took us from Cusco north to Bogota, Columbia; across the Atlantic to Madrid, Spain; then southeast to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia before the final flight to Kilimanjaro airport in northern Tanzania. What a trip! It seemed like every couple hours we had meals provided for us, and often free wine as well. The food made the trip a lot easier to take, and was a nice contrast to the tiny bag of nuts we always seem to get on North American flights. At the Kilimanjaro airport we managed to find a cheap van to Arusha, the first of ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail November 8th 2016

Due to the high demand for limited tickets, we had booked our Inca Trail trek about a year in advance. Well, the time finally was upon us! After returning from the jungle trip, we had a few days to prepare for the 4 day, 40ish km hike. We were pretty concerned about doing the trek leading up to it because Nancy's feet had been giving her problems, and we could not delay the trek at all. But on departure day she was feeling up to the challenge, and we were picked up super early once again for a 2 hour bus trip out of Cusco. On the bus we found out we had a relatively small group, there were just 10 of us and 2 guides. Our fellow hikers were from England, Portugal, and the States: ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Manu National Park November 6th 2016

We couldn't come to Peru and not do the Amazon jungle thing, so we booked a Manu National Park tour that left from Cusco. The timing worked out well for a five day trip, so we jumped on board the mini-bus early on day 1 for the long bus ride north to the headwaters of the Amazon. There were 7 of us (including 3 young Swiss guys and a couple from Holland) in on the adventure and one entertaining guide. The national bird of Peru is the interestingly named cock-of-the-rock, which of course was high on our list of critters we were interested in seeing. On the way to the first rustic lodge we stopped several times for wildlife watching, and at a known cock-of-the-rock lek (breeding area) we were able to get some great shots ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca October 31st 2016

After the sand dunes in Huacachina we jumped back on one of our friendly buses and headed southeast, working our way into more central southern Peru. We spent many hours going through spectacular country side. Looking out the window we saw endless plains, giant mountains, pristine looking rivers, flocks of sheep and alpaca, terraced land, ancient handmade rock fences, spectacular sky, lightning shows, simple mud houses, and most locals wearing the traditional colourful Peruvian clothes. All of these more than made up for the fact that our long bus ride almost doubled in length thanks to a labour strike of some sort; a long delay due to a road closure to accommodate a popular car race of some kind; and an eerie bus transfer done at a dark lonely deserted gas station overrun with somewhat wild ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima October 25th 2016

So long family-style living in our sweet Miraflores home, and hello Hostel life! At times it could be confused with "hostile life", but we've been pretty lucky so far, meeting lots of folks from all over. It was so nice emerging from the smoggy Lima air - it was so dirty at times that when we washed our clothes the water was a disturbing colour. Throw in some bird guano accidents and we were almost ready to ditch our clothes and start fresh. When Nancy traveled in the UK a while back she took a Hop On-Hop Off type bus and loved it. At the spanish school we stumbled across Peru Hop, a similar bus tour company that is geared towards backpacking travelers looking to see all the sites but with flexibility to stay as long ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima October 21st 2016

The flight from Denver was a full day of travel that went smoothly and allowed for lots of movie watching. At the Lima airport we were greeted pleasantly by our pre-booked taxi driver who was waiting for us with our names on a sign, we felt like high rollers! She got us safely (although her van took a beating) to our home stay location in Miraflores, a region of Lima about an hour of adventurous driving through thick traffic from the airport. There we were greeted by our host, a super sweet woman who has a fantastic house where we stayed the entire week during our spanish school. Our spanish school was a well-run agency about a half hour walk from our new house. From Monday to Friday we spent a half day at the school, ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Glenwood Springs October 15th 2016

After the drive from Tennessee across the majority of the width of the US of A to Colorado, we discovered a few things: the sky really is bigger in the plains; having absolutely no trees in a campground makes you feel kind of naked all the time; and somehow, accidentally driving right by the Wizard of Oz Museum in Kansas is way too easy to do. We made it to sister Carol and Phil's place in Glenwood Springs (a few hours west of Denver) in a few days-- we're not in Kansas any more, Toto! After recuperating and some preparation (Preparation I?), the four of us (and Mika) went for a canoe trip on the Green River, which is a big tributary to the Colorado River that flows through Utah. The scenery is amazing! See the ... read more

North America » United States » Tennessee » Murfreesboro October 15th 2016

After a brief but meaningful visit to Cambridge we made our way to Murfreeseboro, Tennessee where sister Alanna and her family migrated to a year ago. Nothing eventful happened along the way, except for discovering a spectacular Mediterranean / Greek restaurant outside of Dayton, Ohio. Our time was well spent in Tennessee, finally getting an opportunity to hang with the kids - swimming, go carting, bazooka ball, Walking Dead, ear piercing and birthday cake. Gabe's high school was celebrating homecoming so we even got to participate in the craziness of high school football - marching bands, cheerleaders, dance squad (yes there is a difference between the two), flag twirlers, homecoming queen and her attendants, mascots and die hard fans. And football isn't even that big at Gabe's school compared to most U.S. schools! We had an ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Sault Ste Marie September 10th 2016

For those that don't know, about five years ago we hatched the wicked idea of taking some serious time off to do some bucket list travelling. Well, the time has arrived. Life is short...Seize the day...You only live once...Live as if you will die tomorrow. Pick your cliche, they all work! This blog is meant to serve a couple purposes: to create a travel journal for ourselves, as no doubt otherwise we'll forget our adventures further down the road; and also to share our travels with everybody as we go. After months of planning, which included preparations A through G, the final preparation, H, was completed and we were ready for six+ months of travel. Our itinerary looks something like this: September - Family/friends Road Trip: Cambridge, Tennessee, Colorado/Utah October - Peru November - Tanzania December/Mid-January ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Palawan » El Nido March 10th 2010

OK, so we're not really in the Philippines anymore. We're now home, and sadly our three month epic journey has come to an end. What a trip! We've not posted for a while, as we really enjoyed the last couple weeks of chilling in different parts of the Philippines. After flying out of Cairns, Australia we traveled to Manila. We found much of the Philippines is a great place to visit. However, Manila, the capital, does not remotely fall into this category. We hastily got out of the massive, smog-ridden town and bussed north to try to get in some more surfing, as we'd heard that San Fernando has reliable waves. It turns out 'reliable' is not the words we would use, as although there was a nice beach, the only waves to be seen were ... read more
