What do you mean we have to leave tomorrow?! Didn't we just get here?! Somehow our time in Aussie land is quickly coming to a close, and we've recently realized that we had to hustle ourselves up the the Whitsundays and then to the GBR. After driving north from 1770, all day through rain, we got to Airlie Beach, where it proceeded to rain on us all night long. Periodically the rain would be replaced by a torrential downpour, and then back to rain. Did we mention it was raining lots?? The next morning our van was pretty much soaked right through again, but even worse than before. The wet carpet odour was magnificent. So, we deserted the van for a few days and took off to a sweet resort in the impressive Whitsunday Islands, leaving ... read more

Just made you say "under where". We are continuing our way north, along the coast and of course fitting in as much surfing as possible. We attempted a solo venture by renting some borads in the small town of Coulundra. The boards were a wee bit shorter than the ones we learned on, and lets just say we did not get as much "surfing" in as we did swimming. By then end of the day we had gotten the hang of it again, but were hungry, sore, and were in need of an icy cold beer. But now we're pros! We have spent the last three days in the Town of 1770, surfing the last break of the east coast. How sad! We almost didn't make it out today because of a little rascal called the ... read more

Australia is hot. Not nice summer hot, it is sweating-in-the-shade hot. No surprise there, coming here in the summer, but what a change from New Zealand! But at least we can now get some swimming in without needing wet suits... Sydney is a big city. Fun for a day. We did the true tourist things, including walking the Harbour Bridge, and checking out the Opera House. The next day we got to the famous Blue Mountains National Park, but our excellent luck with the weather ended dramatically at this point. Supposedly the views are great. We got a great view of the inside of storm clouds and tourists wearing plastic bags. Oh well, the post cards look nice. We picked up our new mode of transport in Syndey - our campervan, aka Space Shuttle. We've been ... read more

Tazzie treated us very well! The photos should mostly speak for themselves. After hours of mostly fruitless searching for Tasmanian critters in the wild, and tiring of seeing them splattered on the roadside, we decided to tour some wildlife refuge and breeding parks. It was well worth the visit. If Nancy had her way we would be adopting kangaroos. And wombats. And probably devils. See below for photos - really, there are some there. And a few might be sideways, sorry, there seems to be an uploading glitch at the moment. ... read more

Well, technically we're not in Christchurch right now. We've cleared right out of New Zealand entirely and have moved on to Australia, but more about that later. First -- the end of our time in NZ: We spent quite a bit of time being entertained by the International Buskerfest that was going on. It's an annual thing, and is quite a big deal - people come from all over, both to watch and entertain. Things we saw: the typical unicyclists, jugglers, contortionists--but that was just me and Nancy. We also saw acrobats, fire-eaters, handstands on 20 foot ladders, and hours of comedic entertainment both in parks downtown during the day and also at clubs in the evening. Heaps of fun. The town itself was cool. We put lots of miles on our feet. The huge park ... read more

Hello Family and Friends! We'll get the disappointment over with right away. No pictures or much chat today. We just wanted to touch base (feeling some pressure to post more frequently!) and let you know that this is our last day in NZ. Tomorrow morning we fly to Hobart, Tasmania. We have spent the last three blistful days in Christchurch, completely absorbed in the International Busker Festival. It is amazing! Hence the qucik entry. Chrischurch itself is a great city - the best I have every seen! I would live here in a heart beat. Although feeling a little sad to be leaving, we are super excited about our next adventure! Cheers mate! What's on the barbie? ... read more

Hey y'all We met up with some Texans yesterday. Hence the greeting. As for the title - that has nothing to do with the Texans. They were both girls. More about the balls later though. We may have been a little wrong on our thought that we were "natured out". One day in the larger city of Dunedin was all we needed to set us straight. The town itself was nice. We spent some time at the Southern Pride of NZ beer factory - Speights Brewery. At the end of the obligatory tour, we were set free in the bar, where we were given 30 minutes of free beer and allowed to pour our own beer from the taps. Nancy fell in love with Harvest, with a hint of Apricot (reminded her of Kawarthas Raspberry wheat ... read more

We got in a couple days of big driving earlier this week and are now in the south part of the south island. Lots of sheep, lots of windy roads, no surprises there on the way down. We popped into see some glaciers on the way through, they are some big chunks of ice. No worries about a lack of ice cubes when the power goes out there. I guess the same could be said back home though. We checked out a bungy-jumping place the other day near Queenston (adrenaline sport capital of the world). Maybe the best $350 we never spent. It was the first commercial operation of its kind, you can get great views of the screaming victims as they plunge off the bridge into the river way below. It's your option whether or ... read more

So, the west coast of the South Island gets 7 metres of rain a year. We haven't seen any yet! Then again, we just got here. After our last post, we ended up spending our first night in a 'dorm' style accommodation. Up until then we'd been lucky with 'private' doubles with shared bathrooms. It wasn't so bad, but I'm (F) glad I wasn't the poor sucker on the bottom bunk below me. Honestly, who makes a bunk bed without a ladder of some kind? Let's just say my crazy early morning departure in the dark (we had to catch the 'Interislander' the next morning) was far from graceful. No blood though. We then caught the ferry across from Windy Wellington over to Picton, admired the Queen Charlotte Sound, had some pretty awful fish and chips, ... read more
