Day 43 – Saturday 11th August – Cape Range National Park – Yardie Creek campground At 6am the sky was just lightening and turning pretty colours when Mark and I went for a morning walk along Tulki Beach. The night time temperature on the Cape has been a good few degrees warmer than at Karijini and the car was telling us it was 14 degrees when we set off for the walk. It was a beautifully still morning, the water was just marked by gentle ripples when we saw a couple of dolphins swim past. What is it about dolphins that make seeing them in the wild so special (except if you are fish that is about to be gobbled up for dinner or breakfast)? On the way back we were watching shadowy movements ... read more

Day 42 – Friday 10th August – Cape Range National Park, Tulki Beach campground Mark and I set the alarm for 6am and went for a pre-dawn walk along the beach at Kurrajong, looking out for wildlife and taking photos. On the beach we saw one euro and in the water we saw a couple of humpback whales on the horizon. Once the sun was properly up and the air warmed up a bit I went for an investigatory snorkel along Kurrajong beach. I saw loads of fish in the clear blue water and then found a small coral reef further along the beach which was teeming with fish. It was time to get the rest of the family in the water to see how amazing it was. We had been snorkelling for about ... read more

Day 41 – Thursday 9th August – Cape Range National Park, Ningaloo Marine Park The usual routine of get up, make a cup of tea, have bread and nutella (kids) and cereal (adults) for brekkie then pack up and to be on the road again by about 8.30am, towards what we were expecting to be our favourite destination of the trip – the Ningaloo Reef. By 10.30am we had arrived in the cute little town of Exmouth, the gateway to the Cape Range National Park. We stopped off at the visitors’ centre to get some up to date information and to fill our water tank as that is the only place you can do it. There was considerable action in the car park as we arrived due to a caravan fire which had just ... read more

Day 40 – Wednesday 8th August – Karijini to Barradale Rest Area on the Warlu way We had a long driving day ahead of us so we got up early to pack up and managed to leave the campground by 8.30am. It always seems to take us at least an hour to pack up each time we have stayed for more than one night in a place and consequently used most of our gear. On the way out of the park we stopped at Mount Bruce, the second highest peak in Western Australia, and did a very short walk to a lookout over Marandoo open cut mine, one of the iron ore mines in the Pilbara. The mine was quite a long way away but because of the scale of the operation you could ... read more

Day 39 – Tuesday 7th August – Karijini National Park Another leisurely start saw us leave the tent at around 10 am after bacon and baked bean wraps for breakfast. We drove 45kms to the other side of the park to the Weano Gorge Day use area for our expedition through the Hancock and Weano gorges and Oxer and Junction Lookouts. We had been warned that we would get wet today on the walk and not because of rain. Hancock gorge “walk” starts with a steep descent down to a sort of staircase ladder in the cliffs, which you climb down to reach the bottom of the gorge. More steep rock walls, beautiful scenery and rock hopping along the river. Soon we reached the wading part. Mark wore his hiking sandals which we bought ... read more

Day 38 – Monday 6th August – Karijini National Park This morning when we woke up at 6.30, the temperature was 7 degrees. But as soon as the sun began peeking over the Hamersley range the air quickly warmed up and by 9am it was around 24 degrees! We had a slow start to the day, doing more diary writing and reading. Anna took a soft grey rock from Cape Leveque and has been grinding it into a clay paste for a couple of days, aiming to make some sort of clay animal. Let’s see what happens to this… At 10.30 we headed off to do the Dales Gorge walk. From the car park there is a steep descent into the gorge and before long you reach the very pretty Fortescue Falls, a fan-shaped ... read more

Day 37 – Sunday 5th August – Cape Keraudren to Karijini National Park As expected, we had landed in a pretty beautiful spot last night and we had great views from our tent of the coast, bathed in pinky orange pre-dawn sunlight. The morning temperature was 9 degrees, so it was nice to sit and watch the day start with a hot cup of tea. We packed up after a quick breakfast, did a quick drive around the rest of the Cape, paid the ranger our camping fees ($27 for all of us, including the $10 park entrance fee for the car). Some of our neighbours are staying there for a week, for the bargain price of $64! It’s not bad being a grey nomad. After 150kms of driving we arrived in Port Hedland, ... read more

Day 36 - Saturday 4th August – Dampier Peninsula to Cape Keraudren We packed up in the early morning, filled the trailer with water and left Chile Creek by about 8.30am. None of us were looking forward to the very bumpy corrugated drive back to Broome but it turned out that the grader had done quite a bit of work in the few days we had been on the peninsula and it was much smoother than expected. That meant we arrived in Broome at 11am for a quick pit stop – fuel, a few groceries and coffees. The races are on in Broome today and the place was chockers. People taking an age at the petrol station, loads of people in the supermarket and a huge queue for coffees. After the unsealed road we ... read more

Day 35 – Friday August 3rd – Kooljaman Resort, Cape Leveque We had a slow start this morning and sat around reading and relaxing until around 9.30 (finishing the second book in the Millennium trilogy). Today we wanted to go to the most northerly point of Cape Leveque so headed to the Kooljaman Resort, 20 mins up the road. We paid our $10 entrance fee as a day visitor and headed off to our very own beach – Western beach – for a spot of … you guessed it… fishing. The tide was quite high and still rising so we (the kids) had to hop from rock to rock to stay relatively dry. It was a stunning place to sit and watch the sea. Red/ orange rocks behind you, white sand and an undescribably ... read more

Day 34 – Thursday August 2nd – Quondong to Chile Creek, Cape Leveque Feeling really rested after our few days at the amazing Quondong Point, we packed up and headed further North up the Dampier Peninsula to Cape Leveque. We had been recommended Chile Creek as a really beautiful place to stay but first we had to get there. The 100kms of unsealed road was the worst we had driven along – big bumps, undulations, corrugations, deep sandy patches etc. So it was slow going until we reached the Aboriginal Township of Beagle Bay, which is famous for the Sacred Heart Church and its pearl oyster shell decorations. We briefly joined in on a photography tour for a few minutes and took some of their recommended shots. Driving north from Beagle Bay the road ... read more
