Day 35 – Friday August 3
rd – Kooljaman Resort, Cape Leveque
We had a slow start this morning and sat around reading and relaxing until around 9.30 (finishing the second book in the Millennium trilogy). Today we wanted to go to the most northerly point of Cape Leveque so headed to the Kooljaman Resort, 20 mins up the road. We paid our $10 entrance fee as a day visitor and headed off to our very own beach – Western beach – for a spot of … you guessed it… fishing. The tide was quite high and still rising so we (the kids) had to hop from rock to rock to stay relatively dry. It was a stunning place to sit and watch the sea. Red/ orange rocks behind you, white sand and an undescribably blue sea/ sky combination above. We allowed a few other people on our beach to take some photos and have a swim. When the line got tangled we decided it was time to put the rod away and head over to the Eastern beach for some swimming. We walked through the campsite and passed the historic lighthouse and safari tents on stilts to the
other side of the promontory. The Eastern beach was another oasis of white sand and turquoise sea, gentle waves and a few rocks. As it was high tide we didn’t have far to walk for a decent swim in the cooling water.
It was so peaceful and relaxing we spent the whole afternoon there, in and out of the water, beach combing and reading our books. We went for a bit of a snorkel around the rocks as the tide went out but only found some good shells at the bottom of the sea – again no fish! Sunset is best viewed from the Western beach so we got all energetic and wandered back the other side of the campsite. This time there were many more people on Western beach as a couple of tour day trips from Broome had arrived to take photos of the sunset. As soon as the sun dipped beneath the horizon the crowds were off on their 2 ½ hour bumpy journey back to Broome and we had the place almost to ourselves again.
We got back to Chile Creek at just after 6pm and I got to work on the last piece
of the fish we had been given. Coated the fish in seasoned flour and pan friend it and sauted potatoes to make…. bush-style fish and chips with coleslaw as a side dish. Looking forward for Luke to finally catch us something so we can have this meal again! Anna and Luke made us damper using the “best ever damper recipe” we had seen at El Questro. We bought milk powder from the supermarket to be able to make it. The full can of beer required seemed to be a bit much liquid for the dough so next time we will drink some beer first then give the can to the kids for their dough. We made one large loaf and cooked it in the camp oven over the fire. Warm sweet damper with butter and jam made for a great dessert and we still had half a loaf left over for tomorrow.
