Being two Eliza is obsessed with all things "baby" (or baba as she says). She likes to use baby forks and spoons. She loves pointing out the small cars ("Auto baba!") and this weekend we did the ultimate in European touring and went to a "baba country": Luxembourg! The best laid plans. We had ambitions to rent cars and do Luxembourg one day and the Netherlands another day so that our visitors could "pin" two more countries. However after wrestling everyone out of bed at 6am and packing up for our first day trip Jonathan and his father had the fun task of discovering that Hertz had overbooked car rentals across Belgium. We were able to salvage our day with a trip to Brugges, but it made the double country pin virtually impossible. After our long ... read more

I almost wrote September 2, 2001 because I am so used to writing her birthday. I woke up at six am and took a run around town. Luckily I noticed all of the barriers and had some idea of the bus chaos that would be occurring later in the morning. Came back, showered and woke up Elaine and Deb. I dressed, made coffee and croissants and the girls woke up. Emma was very excited for her birthday! We had celebrated with gifts last night but Grandma and Grandpa were still waiting to give her theirs in a special location. I had our bag all packed to go, so I fed my girls while everyone else got ready to go. All nine of us were ready to go by about 8:30 which gave us loads of extra ... read more

Two weeks ago we moved into our newest home. It is amazing. It is only around the corner from where we used to be but it is HUGE and full of all sorts of character, which our last apartment was lacking. We now have a big living room, with a fire place for some chairs. We have a big dining room, also with a fire place, and a small, galley style kitchen. We have a lot more counter and cabinet space and AN OVEN. We have a half bath on the first floor (thank goodness because life was rough with just one bathroom and five people) and a terrific old wooden staircase leading upstairs. My favorite feature of the house is the MUDROOM! I have been longing for one of these in Belchertown. On the second ... read more

Today is the last day to use our eurrail pass. Though it was quite cloudy and chilly we made plans with the Clasens to meet at the train station in Oostende. We biked to the Leuven train station and managed to catch the 9:35 train (only because it was 15 minutes late otherwise we would have missed it). The train was packed but it was an easy 1.5 hour trip and the kids were all good; they must be getting used to it. We arrived shortly before Zoe and Christian and so we got a cup of coffee. Once together we walked along the street to the beach. Though the town isn’t very pretty but the beach was fairly empty (probably due to the weather) and the kids had so much fun running around and playing ... read more

One of the things we have been enjoying on our visit here was the selection of French music Jose has. One artist in particular, Georges Brassens, was terrific. Unfortunately even the great music in the morning didn’t make up for our miserable night. Eliza was up in the middle of the night and between her and this nasty mosquito bothering us all night long we got very little sleep. The girls got up at 8:30 and Jonathan went into the bedroom to grab a few more minutes of rest. I started packing up while the girls ate. We tried to start a load of laundry but couldn’t quite figure out Jose’s machine, but he should be back tomorrow. We cleaned the apartment and headed out the door around 11am. As it was our last day in ... read more

Everyone was up by 8:30, but Emma woke up with a cold and Abigail looks like she will be next. We ate our usual fare and got packed up for another family day in Paris. Today props go out to Don and Kerry who told us, several years ago, about the Parc du la Villette. What an off the beaten track find!! The park is designed as the prototype of the new urban playground. It has a cinema, theater, natural history museum, elevated running track and playgrounds. We were on a mission to get to the dragon slide which we had heard so much about. WOW! It was so cool. Ultimately we think it is about equal in size to the one near us but this one is open whereas the one at Provinciaal is a ... read more

We were all up a little after 8 this morning. We had breakfast (yogurt, bread, bananas) and I packed a lunch for us. We were out the door at 9:30 and two hours later we arrived at Versailles. There was a slight problem because the C line, which is a fast way of getting around the left bank of Paris was under repair so we had to take the slow trains across town, which luckily didn’t bother the girls much as they love to hang on the bars. Unfortunately it being Sunday and almost noon when we arrived it meant 3 hour lines to get into Versailles. I felt really bad because if I had known we wouldn’t get to go in here I would have brought them into Sanssouci in Berlin just so they could ... read more

Luckily we didn’t have an early train this morning. Eliza was up at 6:30, which meant that since it was Jonathan’s turn to get up he only had about 3.5 hours sleep! We left our first house guest, Jonathan's cousin Eric, to see himself off on Monday morning. We had a great visit with him and the boys especially had a lot of fun last night at MachtRock as there were bands on stages all over town (hence the three hours of sleep!) We got out of the house easily and made our way to Brussels to catch our 10:45 train to Paris. There was a French woman and her two kids in front of us and two Chinese businessmen diagonal from me. As we were about to leave a man came up to one of ... read more

Another beautiful day!!! I hope we don’t get too used to it! We decided to spend the day in Maastricht, which was billed in our guidebook as the ‘gem of the south’ (of the Netherlands). Eric (Jonathan's cousin who arrived yesterday to stay with us for a week) was excited, I think, to explore a small Dutch town and the girls were excited to have someone with us on one of our travels. We had to change trains in Liege, but each leg of the trip was only about ½ hour long. We got to Maastricht at about noon. We took a pretty walk from the train station across the river and lunched in front of a huge cathedral. It is a really pretty little town. We decided to wander to St. Peter’s Fort which was ... read more

The sun was shining down on us today! Yeah. What a birthday treat for the birthday girl. We made pannenkoeken for breakfast and stuffed them with jelly and/or nutella and bananas. Everyone loves that meal. We stayed around the house most of the morning so I could clean up for our first house guest, Jonathan’s cousin Eric. We walked to the bakery and got a strawberry tart for dessert (still no oven to cook in) and the kids got a piece of cake to split for an after lunch treat. We made grilled cheese for lunch and they split their cake with raspberries on the side for dessert. I tried with all my might to get Eliza to take an early nap so we could head to the park and the pool, but she was too ... read more
