Our home
Eliza is standing in the front door at number 71, our new home. Two weeks ago we moved into our newest home. It is amazing. It is only around the corner from where we used to be but it is HUGE and full of all sorts of character, which our last apartment was lacking. We now have a big living room, with a fire place for some chairs. We have a big dining room, also with a fire place, and a small, galley style kitchen. We have a lot more counter and cabinet space and AN OVEN. We have a half bath on the first floor (thank goodness because life was rough with just one bathroom and five people) and a terrific old wooden staircase leading upstairs. My favorite feature of the house is the MUDROOM! I have been longing for one of these in Belchertown. On the second floor we have a full bath (with a lot of quirks and a crazy shower), three small bedrooms and one big master bedroom. Emma and Abigail both have sinks in their bedrooms so they are enjoying brushing their teeth and washing up in their rooms. On the third floor is the attic/playroom/guest room. It is really big and has two twin beds up there and
Living Room
We decided we needed to decorate a little and made a collage of sorts on our living room wall of Tin Tin characters. It is our ode to Belgian comic book art. The kids have really been enjoying the Tin Tin books we have gotten. plenty of room for mattresses to be thrown on the floor. I was a little worried with all of our friends and family coming to visit that we would be on top of each other, but there appears to be plenty of room for everyone. The kids love having the attic to play in.
One of the biggest differences in living in a house now is being on the ground floor. We really feel like we are living in a UNESCO World Heritage site because the tourists are always popping their heads in our living room windows. We understand the curiosity but have to remind ourselves to close the shutters, especially at night.
We also have a little backyard which has served us well the past few weeks. The kids have been digging up the cobblestones, having makeshift tea parties and playing soccer. I have enjoyed hanging my laundry out to dry (when it isn't raining that is). We also have a shed to keep our bikes in. Jonathan, Emma and I all have bikes now. Emma isn't quite up to biking around town yet so when we want to go places we pile all of the kids
on our two bikes. I was able to get the guys at the bike shop to locate a second hand babyseat and they installed that on mine. Currently we put one of the big kids in the babyseat, Eliza in the backpack on my back (so she essentially is sitting on one of her sisters' laps) and one big kid riding the rack of Jonathan's bike with their feet in the saddle bags. It is pretty comical but it gets us around and saves money since we don't have to ride the bus as much. This past weekend we took our bikes to the train station and across town on an abbey finding adventure. It was loads of fun. Last weekend we woke up on Sunday with nothing to do so we picked a random little town twenty minutes away, rode to the train station, found a train going there and hopped aboard with just some lunch in hand. It was a terrific outing and the town, Diest, has the best begijnhof we have seen yet in Belgium.
We are looking forward to showing our home to all of you when you visit!!
