Lake View at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Yesterday was mostly a maintenance day, but we did get in one sight-seeing trip and it was superb. One of the problems with long-term traveling is given to us courtesy of the pharmaceutical and insurance industries - managing your prescriptions. I guess I didn’t mention yesterday when talking about the benefits of napping when old, is that another great privilege of aging is you get to take more pills. Joan and I are both managing cholesterol and blood pressure problems and we each also have a couple more ailments that are being treated by medicines. But the drug industry, trying to wedge themselves into every cranny of your personal life - and vacuuming up money in the process, has set up the system to really work against your own ... read more

Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, Chesterton, IN After two exciting days in Chicago, we decided to play in a lower key today and stayed closer to home. After our morning rituals, we donned our biking gear and headed down the bicycle trails once again south. I kind of doubt that the entire industrial area up here is as biker-friendly as this park area, but they have obviously invested a lot of time and energy into promoting their bicycle paths. We learned at the visitor center that one of the main paths is maintained, at least sometimes, by the local power company. That makes a lot a sense since it appears to be a service road under the power lines. But most of the other trails are well maintained and safe for riding. So we rode past the ... read more

River North/Streeterville Neighborhoods, Chicago, IL Today’s rebellion item was food and, once again, Joan had to twist my arm to join her. Specifically, we did a ‘food tour’ offered by Chicago Food Planet, one of several companies that provide these things. The first time we did one of these was last year in Savannah, Georgia, and I have to say that this is a great way to see parts of a city. The basic idea is that you gather a group of tourists, usually on-line, and match them with a young, energetic resident of the city who is proud of her town and has studied quite a bit about history and architecture. Then you gather at a particular restaurant and begin the tour. You move between restaurants sampling different signature foods that are either specialties of ... read more

Art Institute, Chicago, IL Joan is so much fun to travel with. So often she reacts like a kid in a candy shop when she is exposed to something new. She can completely lose herself when she reads a book or watches movies and I have to nudge her to get her attention. And so it was for most of yesterday. Joan is a city girl, of sorts. She was born and raised in Los Angelos and then spent the bulk of her life in Albuquerque. Albuquerque is a city of half-million (metro area) so counts as a city but not really a big one. Los Angelos is the second largest city in the country, but as we are all aware, L.A. grew up in the automobile age and is structured horizontally with freeways tying the ... read more

Indiana Dunes State Park, Chesterton, IN Yesterday was a regrouping day. Partially it was a down day - we did get a nap in late in the day. And partially it was to gather information for the coming busy week. After a leisurely breakfast of bacon and eggs, we took a short walk with the girls part-way up the nature trail. One of the great things about walking our corgis is that everyone loves to stops, pet the dogs and chat. We learned from a local resident that the town of Valparaiso, just south of the park, had a delightful small town center of pubs, restaurants, and shops and we should check it out. Our goal today, though, was to bicycle down to the train station and get information about the fares and schedule. So we ... read more

Indiana Dunes State Park, Porter, IN There was only one day in the whole trip that I was concerned about driving the big rig, and that was yesterday’s drive around Chicago - the nation’s third largest city. I feel I’m a pretty good driver - in fact, I’ve been driving about 50 years now and never been in an accident, (except once when I guy hit me from the rear because he couldn’t stop on ice, but I don’t think that counts.). But driving a big car with an even bigger trailer where your blind spots are pretty good size on both sides is a bit more challenging. And if you are hitting a big city where you don’t know your way and you have to navigate different highways, which usually means changing lanes, it can ... read more

Wisconsin Dells, WI For our third day in a row, it was completely overcast here yesterday. It threatened rain, like it did the days before, all day long, but then seemed to hold it all in for the evening. Sure enough, last night around dusk, it started raining and didn’t stop all night long. It is now 6:30 AM and it is still raining intensely. But while we could, we headed out yesterday for the tourist town of Wisconsin Dells. I have to admit I had never really heard of this place until we started planning this trip. If someone had told me that southern Wisconsin was a tourist trap spot, I don’t think I would have believed it. No-one ever suggested it as a go-to place when I was a kid. But there it was, ... read more

Baraboo, WI Not every day can be fun and games. We’ve learned on our travels to build in ‘down days’ which are essentially days we don’t do anything stressful at all. We play cards, take naps, maybe cook a nice meal, possibly a short hike near the campground. These are recovery days we use to rebuild our energy - this traveling stuff can be hard work. But we found in the last year that sometimes down-days get crowded out by necessary chores. Stuff like major piles of dishes in the sink, or the huge bag of laundry that’s been accumulating. If you have to dedicate part of your ‘down-day’ to doing laundry, then it really isn’t a down-day. And, we found, that if you called something a ‘down-day’ and ended up doing laundry and chores, well, ... read more

Devil’s Lake State Park, Baraboo, WI By the time I finished yesterday’s post, the clouds had definitely arrived and it was spitting rain. We hurriedly finished up breakfast and then dishes. I packed up the chairs and outside gear and readied all the equipment to hitch-up. Although we’ve become well versed in hitching and unhitching, it still takes at least 30 minutes, and more the longer we’ve been there since we have more junk to clean-up and pack away. So by the time we actually rolled in the slider, lifted the stabilizing jacks, and started to attach the trailer to the car, it was raining. Hitching up in the rain isn’t one of our favorite activities, but we’ve become accustomed to it and now have towels waiting in the car to dry off. It was relatively ... read more

Elkater City Park, Elkater, Iowa For ten days now we’ve been carting the bikes around on the top of the car. First couple of days of driving we kept hearing these threatening noises coming from the bike racks. It really sounded like they were about to come off and, at 60 mph, there’s no telling what a flying bicycle could do. So it was really pretty scary. I kept stopping the car to tighten various bolts and screws on the bike rack and it seemed like that would work for a while but then the creaking sounds would come back. Finally, after just kind of touching everything, I found a knob that was loose. It seemed to tighten the seam between the horizontal bars on the roof rack, and the vertical bars. And thank god, the ... read more
