We were up early for a hot shower - a luxury in Cuba - and were on the streets just before 0800 to walk to the Moncada Barracks. Lonely Planet said that the gates opened at 0900 and this was confirmed by the security guards at the gate when we arrived at 0830. We filled in time circulating the barracks and walking through Parque Historico Abel Santamaria featuring a fountain sculpture of Moncada participant Abel Santamaria and Jose Marti. We returned to the entrance just before 0900 to be told that the new opening time was 0930 so we bought a few drinks and waited - you simply can’t rush things in Cuba. Entrance to the Moncada Museum was CUC2 each, CUC1 for the camera and CUC5 for the video camera. We enquired and were provided ... read more

Just as Nicolas had told us, his mate Paco was amongst the mob of touts as our bus rolled in at 0630. His father had a Peugeot waiting for us and we headed off to our casa, located 8 blocks south of Casco Historico - the old town. We signed in and had a couple of hours sleep to recover from the overnighter and had walked up to the focal point of Casco Historico - Parque Cespedes - by 1000. The main square is dominated by Cathedral de Nuestra Senora de la Asunction almost as much as it is dominated by touts for taxis and cigars. We headed away from the hustle (and hustlers) towards Plaza Dolores - or so we thought - finally finding refuge in a small cafe. As is customary in Cuban restaurants ... read more

After the dramas of the previous evening we both slept like logs until 0800 when we headed a few blocks north of the casa to try our luck with my visa now that the internet transfer had taken place. The machine was out of order initially but we were fortunate to only have to wait a few minutes to try our luck. The ATM seemed to be doing the job but ‘failed transaction’ came up on the screen and we still had no access to our money. Determined to make the best of a bad situation and with CUC20 still to our name, I talked Jo into continuing on sightseeing in Havana while we could. If the card wasn’t going to work we were stuffed anyway so all we could do is find a cashier in ... read more

I woke about 0700 and made my usual assortment of random morning noises and Jo didn’t stir. I thought it best to leave her alone until breakfast at 0800. She did get up but pretty much just stared at her food before returning to bed. I went to the main street to buy bus tickets to Havana (CUC12) but was stopped in the street on the way - “Amigo - Amigo Fuckoff” - I turned around and recognised one of the blokes that had tailed Jo and the girls home. To my surprise he immediately apologised for the noise and shook my hand - No problemo. I bumped into Juan again and we dropped in on the newly awoken girls for an hour or so swapping emails and travel stories as is customary amongst budget travellers. ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Oeste » Viñales October 28th 2008

We were up at 0645 and managed to see the last few moments of sunrise over Viñales from the front porch as vultures flew around us. We’d ordered breakfast for 0800 so we filled in time reading and lazing about. The egg, bread and coffee hit the spot just nicely and we headed off for the town square to catch a hop-on hop-off bus around Parque Nacional Viñales. The portacom that was the ticketing office was still not open at 0915 and there was no sign of a bus so we made some enquiries and were told that the bus was not working. Moped rental was not an option either as we were told that none of the bikes were currently licensed. The helpful lady at the car rental place suggested we hire a taxi but ... read more

Our taxi showed up at 0710 - 20 minutes early - so we hurried our packing and shot out the door, collecting a list of Nicolas´ friend’s casas in various cities on the way. Rebecka and Karolina, two Swedes staying in the room next door, had the same plans to go to Viñales so we shared the CUC5 cab. The rain was coming down heavily and the roads on the way to the station were under anywhere between six inches and a few feet of water. Additionally - just to keep things interesting - the windscreen demister on the taxi wasn’t working. We managed to get tickets on the 0900 bus for the three and a half hour trip for CUC12 each but had over an hour to spare. The cafe was located upstairs from the ... read more

Due to the end of daylight savings we turned the clocks back an hour but didn’t get any extra sleep waking about 0630. The rest of the house hadn’t adjusted well either so our 0800 breakfast was brought forward. We met two guys that were staying in the other spare room in the house who were from the North Shore and spent a couple of hours chatting before hitting the streets bound for the Capitolio once again as the rumour was we could get internet access there. We found it - but at CUC5 we had to get typing fast. We emerged about midday into 30 something degrees of heat and 90 something percent humidity (it was autumn after all) and caught a hop-on hop-off bus CUC5 with the aim of getting to Plaza de Revolucion. ... read more

We had arranged a CUC3 breakfast with Nicolas and were met at 0800 by a huge bowl of fruit, scrambled eggs, a loaf of bread, a glass of grapefruit juice and a jug of coffee. By 0830 we were pounding the pavement on the Malecon, the waterfront road heading towards Habana Vieja - old Havana. Cuba is just how I imagined it would be - beautiful but decrepit architecture, locals fishing off the rocks, kids running through the narrow streets and old Yankee cars spilling exhaust fumes into the air as they rattle past. We’d barely been walking 30 minutes when we stumbled on Plaza 13 de Marzo and the impressive Museo de la Revolucion - the former presidential palace and home of Fulgencio Batista the infamous president overthrown in the revolution of 1959. The museum ... read more

We had arranged the S30 airport transfer previously and were pleasantly surprised when our man showed up on time at 0230. We were at the airport just after 0300 but we finally made the front of the queue and checked our bags in at 0415. The queue itself wasn’t very long but for some reason everything took an age to complete. As expected the queue for customs was long and only three windows were open. Every passenger was subjected to two or three minutes of the agent flicking blankly through their passport before stamping it, handing it back and immediately giving the “what the hell are you still doing here” look. In all honesty I’d just about had a guts full of the place when it got worse. Signs to the smokers lounge took us to ... read more

We were awake too early for the hostel breakfast so - keeping with our “safe foods policy” - we had bacon and egg muffins from McDonald’s along with “real” coffee from McCafe. This was to be our last day in Peru and we really had nothing planned. To be honest since the incredible few days at Machu Picchu and my bout of food poisoning we had both started to switch to Cuba mode. Once you’ve seen Machu Picchu everything else is decidedly average. At 0830 we struggled through our prepaid hostel breakfast and headed back to the market, this time to buy a couple of souvenirs and gifts. Rather amusingly, having spent so many leisurely hours walking through markets during our stay in Peru, when we were ready to buy we struggled to find anything worth ... read more
