Checking out of Golden Wings was not the drama I was expecting. I think the lads on the front desk realised there were not going to be commissions coming their way from us. We walked the now familiar blocks down to Hoan Kiem Lake and across to Kangaroo Cafe, arriving about 0715. Breakfast was a bowl of Pho and a soft drink each D80,000 all up (NZ5) from a tiny roadside cafe. The bus to take us to Halong Bay arrived just after 0800 and eight of us (three Kiwis, an Aussie and four Poms) headed out on the four hour journey. I kept myself intermittently amused between the fine tunes of Megadeth and keeping an eye on how many head on collisions we avoided. The driving outside of the city was no better than in ... read more

Jo woke me at 0500 as we’d planned to catch sunrise at Hoan Kiem Lake. The dimly lit narrow streets of the Old Quarter were yet to wake up and to say it was more pleasant when no one is trying to sell us something is an understatement. We made it to the lake just in time for sunrise* and I took plenty of photos. * We hadn’t actually seen the sun since we’d been Hanoi but we assumed it must have been up there somewhere on account of the fact it was getting lighter. Breakfast was at an expensive but perfectly located cafe right on the banks of the lake. Jo went traditional again with a bowl of Pho while I stuck with the bacon & eggs – a man needs his morning fry up ... read more

Breakfast was at Golden Wings II and was included in the NZ$25 per night rate. Jo went with the local option of Pho but I couldn’t go past the good kiwi eggs and tomato sauce sandwich. A few days previously I had made a 180 degree map reading error that Jo would not let me forget and since then she’s taken control of navigation. We made it to our first stop without putting a foot wrong. With just a few days before we were planning to be in Halong Bay, we were keen to get a tour booked and with all the touts wanting our custom, some pre-trip study suggested that the Kangaroo Cafe was the place to book. We signed up for a two night boat trip around the famous limestone rocks. Hoan Kiem Lake ... read more

As we were still not used to the time zone we were both awake at 0600 again (so much for a holiday). Breakfast was at the sports bar and by 0730 we were in a taxi on the way to the Jade Emperor Pagoda. Although a messy looking building from the exterior, the interior was sensationally crafted, with timber carvings, statues, ceramics and all sorts of Taoist religious art. An old lady was chanting (what I’m not sure) but combined with the unusual absence of noise from the streets outside, it was rather a magical experience. Although it was only 0930 the heat was already in the mid 30s and the tempting sight of a sidewalk cafe was too much for me. We were initially served some strong ice tea that almost hit the spot as ... read more

Despite being untold hours behind with our sleep, we both arose at 0600. The faint sounds of scooter horns suggested we weren’t the first people in Ho Chi Minh City to be awake. Already the scooters were five deep on our one lane street. We had breakfast at a sports bar next to The Empress Hotel, a freebie with our room booking on Expedia (NZ$23 per night). I was hoping for some Pho – the traditional Vietnamese noodle soup but the sight of scrambled eggs and bacon wasn’t at all unwelcome. Alongside was some fresh peach juice, watermelon and some lovely pork and prawn won-ton type things that took a hammering in the half hour we were there. The plan for the day was to roughly follow the Lonely Planet walking tour of Ho Chi Minh ... read more

The Rugby World Cup consumed enough of my limited mind-space prior to this trip to ensure there was little time for preparation or getting excited. The relief of the lads holding Bill aloft after 24 years of waiting was quickly followed by apprehension and excitement for the few days prior to takeoff. Much of the apprehension was caused by our booking with Jetstar – the saving of near 50% on what we could get through travel agents was enough to take a bit of a risk on our choice of airline. The decision paid off as the plane left only 15 minutes late and, aside from an error in judgement in not ordering any food for the 10 1/2 hour flight, it went by like any other flight – slowly and not without it’s screaming babies ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires November 15th 2008

There wasn’t meant to be a day 45 of our holiday but Aerolineas Argentinas ensured we got an extra - albeit unwanted - day. We had a buffet breakfast at 0730 and checked out, joining our fellow passengers in the hotel foyer to wait for the 0830 bus that AA had organised to transport us to the airport. It wasn’t altogether unexpected that nothing had shown by 0900. The hotel tried to help as best they could and we were eventually herded into a large van with broken rear doors and a female driver that had clearly never driven a van in her life. I spent the whole journey holding on to the rear doors to stop them from opening and distributing the contents of everyone’s bags across the motorway. Unbelievably, despite the fact that we ... read more

The day started badly and got progressively worse. Our taxi didn’t show up at 0830 and neither did Luis with our $5 key deposit. We kept the keys as a final souvenir and a concierge at a nearly hotel sorted us out with a taxi. Our driver spoke English and we talked about Panamanian life, in particular their festivals and the ever increasing Colombian drug problem that has spilled over the border into Panama. The queue wasn’t too long at the Copa Airlines desk but it still took well over an hour to check in for our flight and they couldn’t check our bags all the way through to Auckland. It seems that there is little difference between airport efficiency in South or Central America. We boarded our flight to Buenos Aires and it left on ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Panamá » Panama City November 13th 2008

This was the last full day of our holiday and we only had a few things planned before we had to get packed and ready for a long trip home. We had breakfast at a cafe next to The Terrace that was similar to Denny’s but unfortunately didn’t have the hash browns that I had been craving since the first week of our holiday. We had a few coffees, 3 huge pancakes and a BLT for less than US$10. We hailed a taxi to Panama Veijo - the location of the first Panama City built from 1519 and now home to a museum dedicated to the area as well as ruins of many of the first churches and houses prior to the levelling of the city by a group of pirates led by Henry Morgan (of ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Panamá » Panama Canal November 12th 2008

You can’t come to Panama without a visit to the Panama Canal so the Miraflores Locks were first on the agenda. We caught a taxi for the half hour journey (US$15) and arrived about 0745 to be greeted with the news that the visitors centre opened at 0900. We couldn’t find a cafe for breakfast so we passed the time walking down the main road to the locks to try and find a vantage point to watch the three container ships queued up pass by. Whilst not the best view, we saw a large MSC vessel pass through as P&O and NYK vessels edged slowly forward. We were back at the front gate before 9 and were allowed through to the visitors centre soon after - just in time to see the Antwerpen Express pass through ... read more
