Europe July 3rd 2014

Breakfast was at the hotel and wasn't half bad I must admit, with salmon, cheeses, spreads, bread and even bacon and eggs. As much as I would have enjoyed the traditional bacon and eggs, I really enjoyed the cheeses, meats and bread. I was acutely aware that we were not going to be in Europe for much longer and I was certainly going to miss good bread and cheese. We met the Herbys at the train station and plotted a course for Sachsenhausen, a museum that began life as a concentration camp located in Oranienburg, some 35 kilometres north of Berlin. We had to change trains at one point and we ended up being delayed as all trains ground to a halt while we were on the platform. Armed police swarmed the station and spoke to ... read more

An alarm woke us for the second day running although this one we'd set ourselves. We packed our now significantly heavier bags with all our Monty Python merch, walked to Bethnal Green Station and bought tickets to Gatwick. We had a small walk of a few blocks to transfer to the right line in London central but made it to the airport with what we thought was plenty of time to spare, only to be caught in a huge check in queue at Easy Jet. We made our flight but it was a little too close for comfort. Nik and Emil greeted us in Berlin where they were dropping the rental car off and we caught a cab into the city where we checked in to the Hollywood Media Hotel - our home for two of ... read more

We'd built the entire trip around out opening night tickets to Monty Python Live at the O2 Arena. To be a little more precise, we'd built the whole trip around tickets to the only night of Monty Python Live before additional dates were announced. Today was the day - we were off to the show. The day didn't begin at all well as the fire alarm in the Travelodge Crystal Palace at 0530. We wearily made our way down the fire escape from the seventh floor, arriving at ground level a minute before the fire brigade showed up. They cleared the building and confirmed that there was no fire. We had only just made it back to our room when the alarm went off again... and stayed on... until 0600 when we'd had enough. We figured ... read more

A good nights sleep was just what I needed and was just what I got. We woke up around 0830 and left the hotel at 0900 bound for the Crystal Palace Station, a 30 minute walk away. Paul, Jen and Caitlin had an appointment by Shoreditch Station so we caught the train there and had breakfast in a cafe before strolling the surrounding streets. Paul texted me to say they'd been delayed but suggested a cafe to fill in some time and we used Google Maps to find "Look Mum, No Hands" a cycling themed cafe and repair shop that was a little quirky and served good coffee. I used the time to try and catch up on this blog and nutted out a few days worth of dribble. Paul led the way through the streets ... read more

The alarm was most unpleasant and went off less than 2 1/2 hours after we went to sleep. I tried to get out of bed a few times but my head was lead. I'm not sure how I managed it in the end but it was clear that I was being punished for the big night out. Nik (legend that he is) was downstairs at 0500 as he had promised and looked marginally better than I felt... must have been the whiskey he poured into my glass I reckon. Checking in at Amsterdam was easy and two bacon and egg muffins improved my state slightly. As we had booked Easy Jet, there was no lounge for me to sleep in waiting for the flight and we spent 20 minutes standing in the queue to board. I ... read more

The alarm rudely woke us at 0500 but the thought of attending my first ever MotoGP made it a little easier to get out of bed. We'd run through the train schedules to ensure we would get in to Central Station on time to connect with our train to Assen and at 0545 we boarded the first of three trains to the circuit. The friendly staff at Centraal pointed us in the right direction for the train to Assen and we were off on time at 0630 after some early confusion with two trains being on the same platform. A growing number of folks in MotoGP or motorcycle merchandise gave the correct train away. We had one change of train about 90 minutes into the trip and had to wait no longer than a few minutes ... read more

Our plan to get into Amsterdam early to avoid the queues at Anne Frank's house went half right... we got there before opening at around 0845. The queue was already a couple of hundred people long and light drizzle wasn't helping conditions at all. None of us boys had much interest in standing in a wet queue for what looked to be at least a few hours so we headed to a cafe and left the girls to it. By 0930 we got a text from the girls saying that they were still a hundred metres from the door so we walked around the now deserted streets of the tourist area and red light district before grabbing a beer at an Argentine restaurant not far from Central Station. It was well after 1100 when we received ... read more

Given the amount of excellent Belgian beer consumed the previous night, I woke up feeling pretty good. It was 0930 when I stirred to life so I had at least had a decent sleep. I'm not sure if it was Ghent that had me feeling so perky or if it was just that I wasn't in Paris any more. We drove into Ghent and had another look around the magnificent town. It was just as pretty as I'd remembered it, this pleased me as the beer goggles were well and truly on by the time we had caught a taxi home at 0230 earlier that same morning, Jo, Klara, Elin and I paid a visit to the chocolate shop and we ended up spending EUR13 on the "bit of everything box". Like the waiter and bar ... read more

We thought a 1000 leave-time would help us avoid traffic on the road out of Paris but were horribly wrong. We initially engaged the GPS on the VW to help us out but it immediately sent us 20 minutes around the circular road around the outskirts of Paris before suggesting we do a U-turn and head back to where we came from. Nik and I tried to figure it out but every time we came across a road we were meant to be on, it turned out to be a road going either over or under the road we wanted to be on and there were no on-ramps. It tool almost two hours to get out of the city and we were on the outside of it to begin with! I began to relax the moment ... read more

The train into Notre Dame took just under an hour and all six of us were well hungry by the time we got into town. The Herbys elected for crepes while Jo and I ordered a ham and cheese sandwich and terrine from a cafe. The sandwich morphed into salami somewhere between order and arrival but the terrine was pretty good... anything tastes pretty good on proper French bread. The Herbys crossed the road to take a look at Notre Dame but as we'd been there a few days previously we elected to stay in the cafe and watch the rows of tour busses honk horns at each other for blocking the intersection. The queues were too long to get into Notre Dame so it wasn't long before Nik and family returned. Our waiter picked a ... read more
