K- After a weeks stop off to see friends and family in the UK we arrived in Cape Town on Tuesday after an uneventful 26 hour journey from Birmingham via Dubai. During the flight Mark took the opportunity to slip into something a little more comfortable if not entirely inconspicuous (see photo) - he loves to assimilate in to local cultures! Unfortunately he appeared to be the only person in Cape Town who is wearing this local dress - but hopefully it will become more appropriate as we progress in to the bush...... We were met at the airport by Mark's friend Steve and are staying with him, his partner Michelle and their lovely 8 month old baby Chloe in Noordhoeck, about 25 minutes outside Cape Town. We took the scenic route home along the gorgeous ... read more

H - ... even if it is against Walsall! Its rare that I am in the England at the right time to actually get to a chance to see my team play. This week was different. The Villa were playing their first pre-season friendly game against Walsall at Bescott Stadium before heading off to Hong Kong for a tournament. Walsall are two leagues below the Villa so a comfortable win should have been on the cards, but one never knows in these pre-season games. With a little intrepidation I took my American nephew along to see the game ... He has seen the Villa play before a couple of times at Villa Park, but he hasn't seen them play away. Away games can often be more fun, as it is only the hard core fans that ... read more

M – We have tried to mix it up with the food in the last few weeks – street food, market food, bus stations, airports, restaurants and hotels. Most of our experiences have been good and some even great. As we have mentioned before, regardless of where we end up there is always the rice and beans option. And if you don’t choose it, just to make sure you didn’t forget, they will usually add a portion of each to your plate anyway. Now I have entered a new stage – I am experimenting with new concoctions. The first that I am proud to unveil is the Central American Equivalent of the British Chip Butty! Using the other staple that usually comes with all food ........the Flour Tortilla. Take a flour tortilla, add a good squirt ... read more

K- Antigua is generally regarded as the jewel in Guatemala's crown and the "must see" City. However when we arrived there on Sunday we didn’t really take to it - although very pretty the main square was packed with tourists, there were 4 high-end coffee shops on the square alone and we found it a little Disney. However, since then we have explored the side streets and the local market and we have both changed our minds. There is a good mix of real life and tourist comforts and lots of great food and we are considering re-visiting it at the end of the trip in order to attend Spanish school and then perhaps travel through S America. Lots of time to decide that though! Whilst in Guatemala we also spent 3 nights at Lago de ... read more

M - Copan Ruinas is a pretty and interesting little town with two added bonuses. The first, and currently more famous of the two, is the Mayan Ruins which are just outside of the town. The second, not so well known, is the locally brewed German beer. Yes, if you wonder down the back streets you can find a low volume but extremely professional German very Micro-Brewery. We have promised the brewer, Thomas, that we would not write anything about his establishment on TripAdvisor as he basically doesn’t want to become part of the tourist trail. He currently brews his beer as a hobby/small business and his Honduran wife cooks German food and they don’t want to be overwhelmed. Good luck to him on the latter. I lived in Germany for 6 months and I can ... read more

K - I set the shower to hot and started my shower. It wasn’t hot so I fiddled with it - ouch! A quick fizz and a quick reminder from physics 101- water and electricity do not mix! Getting a shock from your shower is however a travelers rite of passage in Central America so I am in good or at least numerous company. Basically the showers are usually cold but the hotel owners have learned that tourists like “caliente”, so enter a drill and a few bits of electrical tape! Mark rolled his eyes on seeing the shower, rolled them again on hearing I touched it and then made a quick call to Prudential to increase my life insurance. Yes Mum - I am perfectly OK and I like my hair spiky! Since my last ... read more

K- There has been a lot of rice in Nicaragua. One day I realized that we had eaten rice with every meal for six days, including breakfast (Gallo Pinto (rice & beans) with eggs, cheese and tortilla is a breakfast staple here). For variety I therefore ordered a dinner with mashed potatoes. They were great – but were accompanied with a side of rice! We remarked on this to our hotel owner in Managua and he told us that he once ordered spaghetti and got a side of rice with it so it seems that our experience is the norm. Fortunately we like rice. I mention food, and the slight repetitive nature of it so far on our trip because our visit to Little Corn, a tiny island (1 mile square) off the East coast of ... read more

M - I am not sure I can describe it accurately enough but there is something very relaxing about the old colonial town of Granada. We arrived off the ferry from Ometempe at 5.30am on a Wednesday morning as the sun was rising. On the off chance we took a cab to a hotel we liked the look of on Tripavisor but as we expected it had not yet opened up for the day. For those that have read Kate’s blog, they really did squeeze three big ladies into the back of a very small car and at least two of them were sitting on Kate. As my dad would say, I don’t know what all the squealing was about, my seat in the front was very comfortable thank you very much! Anyway the hotel looked ... read more

Unfortunately it is Mark who has had the main surprise of my birthday today with a minor dose of Delhi belly - sufficient to keep him up a lot of the night and in bed all day. He is well on his way to recovery though so no-one need worry! And his loving wife has been to the pharmacy to purchase more Imodium (at least I hope that's what they gave me - my Spanish is improving but there was only so much miming I was prepared to do in the Pharmacy!) Eating a solitary breakfast this morning I was however also surprised by the gift of some birthday cake (plus watermelon hearts & candle) and a homemade card from the staff of our small hotel. Thankfully the "¡Feliz cumpleaños!" was kept to a discrete murmur ... read more

M - A couple of weeks ago we found Tango Man enjoying life in exile in the Carolinas after his TV ads were banned in the UK in the early 80s. Now we can reveal the whereabouts of another mega-star. A few days ago we arrived by bus from Costa Rica into Nicaragua and then took the San Jorge ferry to the volcanic Island of Ometepe and the town of Moyogalpa. Having checked-in at our hotel we followed the deafening noise of music to a local park to be greeted by a full on party to promote local tourism on the island. Imagine our surprise to find what looked like a slightly darker and plumper Michael Jackson belting out songs in Spanish (see photos). This guy may not have quite had Michael’s voice (plus I couldn’t ... read more
