Well, as Shania would say, “It looks like we’ve made it……..” I’m writing this in total darkness, from our backpackers lodge in Northbridge, Perth, It’s 6.40 am, and Verlie is still snoozing, we have yet to work out how we want to blog, we don’t really want to blog the same things, so we will probably post one joint blog with my slightly cynical, wry, Meldrewesque view on things balanced out with Verlie’s hopeful, optimistic, slightly sunnier take on our experiences. Well first things first, we had an unscheduled stopover in Singapore, which we managed to turn into a very productive and worthwhile day. We landed in Singapore at 8am, bang on time for our connection to Perth departing at 930am. By 915 we were told that the plane had a fault with the flight ... read more

Yes Folks, 2 weeks today, and we will be in the air. I've been meaning to Blog for a few days now, but I've been on nights this week, and having been busy during the daytime, and napping for an hour or two here and there rather than getting a nights sleep, this is the first time I've been able to string a sentence together all week. Looking round our incereasingly empty house, it's all getting very real now. Of course, as per usual, the last few weeks have not been without drama. First off Verlie flew to Florida, for a final goodbye with her parents, she was due back on Friday 23rd, the day before our leaving party in Southend. But as regular blog readers will know, it was touch and go for while, whether ... read more

Today is Monday April 19th. I'm already missing my best friends Birthday and who knows right now what else i could miss. I'm in the sunshine state of Florida spending time with my Mum and Dad and i am having a great time. I've lazed by the pool with my Mum, played Wii with my Dad and we enjoyed a wonderful 'Sofa Sunday'. The big news is the volcano in Iceland, my flight is due back to UK on Thursday for me to land Friday morning so i can say goodbye to so many wonderful friends and family on Saturday night. Today, Mum and i took a very good friend called Pat out for lunch. It was her birthday last week and 'Princess Pat' always celebrates for the month of April! So we took Pat to ... read more

I’ve now packed up work and I was in full preparation for a boot sale filled weekend. For those in the USA boot sales are a little like yard sales, we drive our cars in convoy at 5:30am to a large field unpack our boots and sell out wares from any old table or rail we can lay our hands on. It’s usually freezing cold too so we hop from one foot to another whilst attempting to smile and negotiate a decent price for a CD we’ve already attempted to sell on Ebay twice. As it happens a few drinks in the pub on Thursday afternoon to bid farewell to my cracking colleagues actually ended up with me drinking far too much wine, falling through the door totally drunk to the point where my husband put ... read more

Doesn't time fly?! I always thought when i was younger making that statement was a sign of getting old but looking back Christmas seems just like yesterday which sounds even more cliché. My diary is full of lunches, dinners, drinks and reminders to see, eat with, call and e-mail friends prior to our leaving date which catch me unawares even if they have been in there for months. Recently the Brides (three wonderful ladies who all got married within the same year as me) took a trip to London. For the first time ever I actually did something in London other than shopped! Mark and i are living in what can only be described as a pigsty. I've never seen our house look so terrible it's like in one of those programmes you watch on the ... read more

So, Exciting times! It's been a while since we blogged, and we have news! We have booked our very first WWOOF placement, its 2-3 hours drive North of Perth City. They re-plant trees, and look after orphan Kangaroos as well as other animals that have copped an unfortunate one. It's a small not for profit family run project, the website is Here We start there on 15th June, for an initial 2 weeks, with an option if all parties are happy, for a further 2 weeks. We've also booked our first weeks accomodation for when we arrive in Perth, at The Ozi Inn Backpackers Lodge They have a free pick up from the Airport service, air conditioned rooms, and the clincher for me....All you can eat pancake breakfast thrown in. We had initially planned to start ... read more

Well, the title says it all, even if it is a slight exageration. This week I had an offer of a 2 year volunteer placement in Namibia from VSO, my former employers from way back. I'd re-applied to volunteer back in November after we found out that the wait time was 2 years plus for my Australian visa, and in-spite of them telling me they wanted me back, when they hadn't come across with anything concrete after 2 weks of my badgering phone calls, I decided not to chase them any harder. And what do you know, 3 months later an offer arrives in my inbox. I looked into the placement description, and being experienced in the ways of VSO, took everything with a pinch of salt, as, back when I was a volunteer, placement descriptions ... read more

So Happy New Year! I am getting so bored of saying that and typing it into every e-mail at work. Although, everytime i feel myself getting a little grouchy with my work computer i am reminding myself that it won't be long until i say farewell to it. I do secretley do a little dance in my head and sing a song to myself everytime i have this thought. Everyone now knows that we have booked our tickets and the reactions varied from shock to tears to total excitement for us. I know we will miss everyone just as much as they will us but i just feel as if nothing can stop us now! I'm sure i will feel homesick at times, like my Hubster said i too have been thinking about the things i ... read more

HAPPY NEW YEAR! So that was 2009 then, quite a busy year for us all told, we will probably look back on it when we are old and grey and say it was the year that shaped and changed our lives forever. 2009 was Of course the year we got married, went through (as did many many people) a very tricky time financially, and made the decision to up sticks and re-locate to Australia. Apart from getting married, the best moment of the year for me was hearing the Christmas chart rundown, and hearing Rage Against The Machine had beaten the X-Factor to number one. A triumph for proper music fans everywhere, and proving what I have known for a long time, that if people stick together and work together then they can win the un-winable, ... read more

Excited beyond belief today, as last night we booked our Flights! We should arrive in Perth as planned on 15th May 2010. We still have yet to tell any of our friends and family, Except my best mate Spence who I texted last night. Not sure how they will react, I imagine some will be pleased and others maybe a little unsure. We went for a slightly more expensive flight than the cheapest available option, £585 sounds like a good price for a return to Perth from London, but when you factor in an 8 hour lay over in Dubai, it's a slightly less attractive proposition. It seems kind of fitting that we booked our flights last night, as the terrible British weather is one of the main reasons we are mad keen on moving to ... read more
