So here I am again, I’ve had a few people asking me if I’m still alive and when the next blog installment was going to be so here it goes. The hostel has been full for so many weeks now and times have been fun in all sorts of ways. One of the funniest things is the names people have from other parts of the world. Considering the complexities and unusualness of my name you would have thought that any name which I came across would be on a par, but no. One morning Mark turned to me and said “This person’s having a laugh aren’t they?” Obviously I was quite intrigued; the Ozi Inn had received an e-mail from a Fanny Cancel checking in during September! We were in hysterics, surely no one uses the ... read more

Ok, so that blog title has got you all interested...........Not quite true of course, I am in love, albeit completely unrequited love, with a woman I've never met. If my opinions/thoughts/musings on music, and live music in particular don't interest you, then you might as well stop reading now, because thats all this blog is about. Our first live gig in Australia. The lady in question is Julia Stone, one half of Brother/Sister duo Angus & Julia Stone. The big single from their new album gets a lot of airplay on the radio station we have on sometimes in the hostel. "Big Jet Plane" I'm not sure if it's a hit in the UK, if it isn't then it soon will be. We were sitting round the hostel one night and our german friend, Carina said ... read more

Hello all, So, I haven’t blogged for a bit but between working and working, sometimes there just aren’t enough hours or my ‘wittiness’ decides to take a nap due to the lack of sleep. I am currently suffering the after effects of too much wine and dealing poker games until the early hours but I’m feeling quite chirpy! The hostel is coming along nicely, Mark has been making improvements such as a new electronic door opening system. Guests think this is wonderful from a security point of view and of course they are not wrong, but the simple fact that Mark and I could then chill out in the back yard undisturbed by random peeps wandering in is much more appealing! The Ozi Inn has been running at full to almost full capacity for the last ... read more

Ok so I know it's been a while, the reason for this is because nothing has really changed and we haven't really done anything too exciting. Some random occurances worthy of note.......I had to remove a kiwi guy who went a bit nuts and pointed a carving knife at me, turns out I'm racist towards Kiwi's, I think he meant Xenophobic but he is just a thick Kiwi, what does he know. I wasn't aware of this side of my character before, so thanks Jeremy for pointing that one out. I just typed Xenphobic into google to check the spelling, I was expecting the old sarcastic italics "didn't you mean", but obviously I got it right first time...... So the mental Kiwi got his marching orders, not before he's insulted the entire hostel, called us all ... read more

So this is my take on the whole running a backpackers hostel thing. I have to say aside from CD Engineering in Namibia, this is the best job I’ve ever had. For the following reasons 1) Because Verlie and I run the place ourselves, and as several people (quite correctly) have pointed out to me over the years, I have at times not quite seen eye to eye with my “line managers” and seem to have an issue with authority. We are our own bosses, and in that respect this job is perfect! 2) I can literally, fall out of bed and be at work. This has been my fantasy for many years, and is a far cry from an hour or so commute each way to Enfield, every day. 3) We get to meet some ... read more

So I know it’s been a while since our last blog, many reasons for this and all will be explained. When we arrived back at The Ozi Inn after our aborted attempt at WWOOFing everyone was pleased to see us and it felt great to be back. We had heard before we left the first time that the hostel was changing ownership and Raff the current manager had handed in his resignation. Mark and I had previously spoken about what work we could do and because of Mark’s visa status we knew that working at a hostel would be perfect for us. We had a chat with Raff and he immediately said we would be perfect and would gladly arrange a meeting for us with the new owner when he arrived. The next decision was where ... read more

Blogs are like buses, you wait 2 weeks for one, then 2 come along at once! I'm blogging this now as Verlie is off to Singapore tommorow and I will be "Sans Laptop" for a few days, so.............. At the very start of this blog, a few months back, I wondered what tales the coming pages would hold, the highs, but also the inevitable lows that we would document. I was, and still am fully committed to making this blog an accurate representation of our experiences, and not just the good bits to make you think we are basking in everlasting sunshine, that we never have to work, and everything is wonderful, this blog is a document of our lives and as we all know, life isn’t always so perfect. I’m writing this from the relative ... read more

Now that we had the ‘Crocovan’ we were desperate to test it out not just for the purposes of how comfortable and practical it was but if it was safe and would indeed take us from a to b! We had met a couple of people at the hostel, Richard 26 from the Midlands but living in Wales and Dana 23 from Bavaria Germany, both of them were bored in Perth much like us and had planned a one week trip to travel the South western loop down to Albany. They had hired a car and invited us to join them for the trip. Excellent idea as this meant that if we did run into any unexpected trouble we were travelling with others who could help. We were leaving the next morning and it was dark ... read more

Ok, First things first, here are the slideshows from Kings Park and Little Creatures Brewery that should have been in the last blog, sorry about that! So we settled into Backpacker life in our second week, we found what we believed to be the cause of the strange looks and curiosity coming our way in our first week, namely the area we were sitting in was the usual smokers table, and I’m not talking about woodbines……We’ve since got to know everyone and made friends, so our initial concerns about our age, and general not very approacable demenour were unfounded, I say OUR age and demenor, I really mean my age and demenour. We went on a couple of day trips on the local trains we went ... read more

So we’ve been here a few days now and I know Mark has blogged about our interesting night in a local pub but maybe not so much about what life in the Ozi Inn is like and all the other info that happens on a day to day basis so let me fill you in. The one thing I can say about the Ozi Inn is that the bathrooms, toilets, kitchens and bed sheets are clean. In all honesty if they weren’t Mark and I would have checked out the following day. The curtains are questionable and there is a lack of plugs in all of the sinks which can make washing up a bit tricky. Maybe if we were in our early 20’s this would be something that wouldn’t be commented on but I have ... read more
