After enduring two snorers and a very hot room (street noise if you leave the window open!) I'm glad to set off down towards the harbour area to get my ticket for the ferry to the Bygdøy peninsula home to about six museums! I realise the 24 hour Oslo Pass will save me loads of money and includes ferry and museum entry along with a load of other perks so get myself one of these instead. A boat has just left so I have a wander around the harbour while I wait for the next one. There seems to be some kind of event going on with marquees and two large decorative elephants, oh and a really ornate gypsy caravan. Amongst all the tourist paraphernalia, tours, boat trips, food outlets, cruise ships etc there are three ... read more

Setting off from Norwich bus station at 7am I'm heading off on my travels again this time to Norway, starting in Oslo. This is another in my tried and tested series 'Doing it on the cheap!' using budget airlines and youth hostels plus buses and ferries rather than the much more expensive cruise option that many seem to favour for Norway. I'm hoping for some stunning scenery after I get out of the capital city and a bit of trolsk. Apparently a word without a single word translation in English other than troll which isn't really its proper meaning at all - according to what I've read anyway! Trolsk really means an eerie, ephemeral misty forest or mountain atmosphere, a feeling that, when you're out walking at dusk, at any moment a troll might appear from ... read more

Having arrived in Christchurch in the dark I find myself leaving in the dark too as I have an early morning flight to catch back to Auckland on North Island. It feels really sad to be leaving South Island behind. I've had such an amazing time, seen pristine, stunning scenery, kayaked on a glacier lake, cruised on the stupendous Milford Sound, seen more cute kiwis, hiked to see glaciers teetering on the edges of mountains seemingly about to slide off, rode the trams in Christchurch, seen amazing wildlife on the Otago peninsual from yellow eyed penguins to hooker sealions and royal albatross. Oh my, it's been so awesome. But home I have to go and Auckland is my first stop before an evening flight heading off to Beijing. BUT I do have a whole day left ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Greymouth March 28th 2016

It's with great relief that I finally board the Kiwi Railway for my trip across the southern alps to Christchurch. Greymouth is left behind and I settle into my carriage to find out what to expect from this long anticipated journey. We have headphones to listen to tour guide stuff if we want to. There's an onboard cafe, where I get myself a veggie lasagne, knowing I'll be in Christchurch too late to go to the shops by the time we arrive. It's one of those microwave things and is actually served IN the microwave packaging so I'm not that impressed with the effort. At least I'm fed. I then head to the open air carriage to see what this is like. The lady at the cafe carriage gave some good advice about going to the ... read more

I'm up and out early for my Intercity bus to Greymouth. The driver. Trev, shows at exactly nine o'clock having disappeared up a different street, giving me a minor heart attack thinking the bus stop pick up site had been changed again and I'd be missing another connection - this time a four hour trip! But no, apparently there were other stops in tiny Franz Joseph and I WAS in the right place. Phew. This is to be another drive through stunning scenery for the section. There's a twisting, turning road up through the mountains surrounded by shear rock faces covered in trees and ferns. It's wet and drizzly and I hope this doesn't make for the tree avalanches I'd heard about on a previous tour! Our first stop is at the Pukeko Stores in Hari ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Franz Josef March 26th 2016

Having the most hours sleep in one night for months I'm feeling surprisingly groggy as I set off to the meet up place at Glacier Kayaking's office along the street from my hostel. When I arrive I'm given an iPad tablet and have to fill in a health and safety/information questionnaire before being introduced to bearded Canadian Colin, one of our guides for the morning, who drives us to the lake we'll be kayaking on, Mapourika. Lawrence our other guide is already there setting up the equipment. We are an all female group, four kiwi friends, four Germans and me. As we are an odd number a volunteer is required to paddle solo, one of the German girls steps forward. And then the pairs have to decide who will be in charge of the foot pedal ... read more

So this is to be my first experience of the competition. Intercity didn't work right for me time wise for this next move from Wanaka to Franz Josef so I'm with their main competition Naked Bus. Stupid name for a company and one of the reasons for putting me off them over Intercity in the first instance and then on further investigation their worse reviews. But mostly because I could book earlier in advance with Intercity, and get in with my many $1 'golden tickets'. I'm not impressed when a minibus and trailer for luggage turns up. My back's still hurting from horse riding so four hours in rubbish knee room, uncomfortable seats is not my idea of fun. Luckily the passing scenery is stunning which helps take my mind off physical niggles. We are travelling ... read more

My arrival in Wanaka was slightly marred by a mix up with my shuttle transfer and subsequent expensive taxi ride the evening before, but I made it and what a beautiful setting the hostel is in. I sit eating my breakfast looking out over the lake and mountains all around. Lucky me. Later I'm sat in the supposed shuttle pick up spot and I'm not entirely convinced it will show, or if it does will be in some arbitrary change of pick up spot that I'm not privvy to. It's the same company that cocked up the day before! But on the dot into the car park rattles this beat up old minibus that's definitely seen better days, as has the driver, very chatty Andy who explains the reason for the state of the van, basically ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Queenstown March 23rd 2016

After my morning horse riding I obviously grab a quick shower and head off to the lunch spot recommended by the stable girl as a good veggie options place on the way to the cable car or Sky Gondolas as they prefer to call them here. In my mind gondolas are long, pointy boats quanted along by singing Italians so I'm hoping more for the cable car version as the ride up the mountain looks incredibly steep! As I'm finishing my lunch it starts to drizzle. Good job I picked the morning option for horse riding which was lovely and sunny. I decide I may as well go up the mountain anyway as the skies are still pretty clear for views from the top despite the drizzle, but I don't bother with the luge thing, not ... read more

I wasn't sure if the horse riding was going ahead as I'd booked via a third party before coming away and hadn't received any confirmation about where to meet my pick up. So come the time I made sure I was ready at my hostel just in case and magically at the allotted time a Moonlight Stables van came to collect me. It was actually the owner Julie picking me up and we had a lovely chat on the way over to the farm where her stables are, situated with the Remarkables mountain range as a back drop. The farm has deer, not farmed for their meat, just for their antlers which are shipped off to China where they are used as an aphrodisiac. The Chinese seem to use an awful lot of things with supposed ... read more
