Legend tells that Kerala was created when some dude called Parsurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishna, threw his battle axe into the Arabian sea. Why he did this isn't clear and equally unclear is why this should turn the sea into fertile land, nevertheless this is the legend and the state of Kerala has officially been a state of India since 1956. The place I'm staying in for the first part of my tour around southern India is the Kerelan city of Cochin. This morning we are taken on a tour of Fort Cochin by our guide Sadjit. Fort Cochin is the colonial part of the city with influences from the Portuguese, Dutch, Chinese, Arabs and not forgetting the Empire building Brits! We start off in a square with massive trees we find out are rain ... read more

India! I'm back and a symphony of senses envelopes my soul. Noise, chaos, sounds, smells hit all at once. If like me you're used to more temporate climes nothing can prepare you for the tsunami wave of heat that hits you and seeps into every core of your being. It feels like there isn't enough air to breathe and instant beads of sweat form on my forehead and around the nape of my neck. Scorchio! My life is in the hands of the transfer guy I'd prearranged with G-Adventures as we weave in and out of constantly honking cars, trucks, buses, tuktuks and mopeds. Those from my native UK who tend towards road rage on what they think are our overcrowded roads would be in a constant state of eye popping, vein bursting, heart attack inducing ... read more

Sadly this is my last day in Norway but I have one more fjord cruise before I leave; this one taking me from Bergen along the Osterfjord all the way to Maostraumen and back. Unfortunately the Bergen proclivity for rain has not let me down and I am yet again faced with jumping puddles and poking out eyes of unsuspecting passers by with the wayward spokes of my brolly. Before I came to Norway I'd booked quite a few activities in advance as I realise how quickly these tours book up and don't like to miss out just because of bad planning. This tactic obviously backfires when the weather isn't so great as I have to go on the trip regardless how rubbish it might be as a result of pouring rain. I join people standing ... read more

I wake up and find that yes, it really is still grotty weather, but not chucking it down like yesterday at least. It's just drizzly and grey and not looking like clearing up any time soon. After troughing on a buffet breakfast - all part of the price at this hostel - bonus! I sort myself out with a packed lunch and then saunter off to find the Ulriken cable car to take me up the to the top of the mountain. Unsurprisingly I'm the only one there and work out I have to get myself a ticket at the self service machine. I bravely get a one way ticket, assuming I'll be able to complete the walk across the mountain to the funicular railway about 12 miles or so away. When I first get in ... read more

So the YMCA turned out to be 'non eventful' rather than 'fun' to stay at, but as this doesn't span very well and doesn't fit the chorus line I pretend it was fun after all and all is well in the world of cheesy Village People land. I'd found myself sharing a 6 bed mixed dorm with a group of 5 Spanish friends, older than the usual youth hostel demographic, probably due to the horrendously high cost of literally EVERYTHING in Norway making hostels an accommodation choice that some wouldn't otherwise pick! They didn't speak much English, which since I speak about 3 words of Spanish I found pretty impressive. They were really apologetic in advance about the early time they'd be leaving in the morning and hoped they wouldn't disturb me too much. As it ... read more

I get to harbour area a little too early to actually line up for the ferry so I treat myself to an ice-cream - surprisingly cheap for Norway - and go over to the picnic tables near the beach to have a read and relax in the lovely sunshine. How lucky am I to have had such great weather for this trip? Soon it's time to head over to where my ferry is now waiting. There are only 12 people in the queue so far so I'm in luck and plonk myself in position number 13 - unlucky for some but not me as it means I'll be able to head up to the front of the boat for a prime spot. We have quite a long wait and more people start to arrive and join ... read more

Another sunny day dawns and I check out of my hostel ready for a move to Bergen in the afternoon. Luckily the hostel can store my main bag so I set off to the harbour area for the start of what I think is a long mountain walk. The walk is lovely, taking me up high with views looking down on the boats below, but it takes about half an hour tops, the scale of the illustrated map being somewhat deceptive. I decide to head off out of Flåm to explore the track used by cyclists doing the one way rail trip and then cycling back down, only I’m doing it in reverse obviously. The sun is baking hot and most unexpected. I’d thought there would be quite a few days of rain it being so ... read more

I arrive at the Flåm mountain railway station and join one of the two queues waiting to board the train. I'm quite a long way back at first which is a pain as there are only a set number of openable windows where you can get a seat which makes photo taking much easier. Fortunately the ticket inspector guy is having problems fitting people onto the platform behind us and we get to legitimately queue jump as a result and I therefore manage to get myself a spot by one of the favoured opening windows even if I will be going backwards. There is a video playing on TV screens overhead with bit and pieces of information about the history of the railway line. As I'd already had a look around the museum I was already ... read more

I find the beach area where I'm supposed to meet for my kayaking session but I'm a little early so decide to check out the Flåm Railway Museum while I wait. I'll be travelling on this line later in the day so it will be good to find out a little about its history before I go. Inside the museum are displays and old photos. Many of the photos show groups of men holding shovels and picks. Surely not! But yes they did indeed make the entire line, including digging through twenty tunnels, BY HAND!!! The work started in 1924 and wasn't finished until a whole twenty years later. It was nick named 'The Twenty Line' as it was 20km long, had twenty tunnels and took twenty years to complete. This mammoth task was pretty essential ... read more

Having escaped the drunkard, naked Mancunian at the hostel I am relieved to find the bus station pretty easily and soon a few of us board the extremely new, clean, high tech coach. As we drive through the suburbs of Oslo we see marina after marina packed with small motor boats and yachts. When we leave the city behind us we pass pristine lakes dotted with little islands, some with cute wooden houses on. The countryside is just rolling hills for a while but soon the land is reaching skywards until I'm having to crane my neck to see the tops. By the side of the road there are pine forests, but I'm loving more the understory packed with Christmas trees! By the sides of all the fjords just off the road are little wooden ... read more
