Geo: 22.33, 114.18 Two days ago we arrived in Hong Kong. We are here for three days, and then we'll all fly apart, separating back into our own individual lives. I hate this part of any group trip; we get to know people for awhile, intensely bound together in our daily activities, beginning to love or avoid those who don't mesh with our personalities or philosophies, and then, abruptly, we're torn apart simply by the turning of the calendar. For me it is always a painful ending. And here we are. Hong Kong is noisy, colorful, crowded, full of frenetic energy, hot and humid. Even for me it is HOT. We all take several showers each day, to refresh and cleanse ourselves from the constant sweating. It is said to take three days to acclimate one's ... read more

Geo: 29.5591, 106.518 After our spiritually uplifting, much too short time in Tibet, we flew back to China, to Chongqing to meet and board our cruise ship, our home for the next three days. I did not want to leave Tibet, to leave Yarpel, our guide and teacher. Tibet is unique; it pulls you in and thumps you on the head, challenging you to breathe, to regain the normal functioning of your body, to wonder what will happen to this beautiful, intense country, and ultimately, to be a better person. But we left. Late on Tuesday we finally boarded the Victoria Anna. Everything was very comfortable, but unlike the other ships I've been on --to Antarctica and to Holland & Belgium-- the bathroom had not only an enclosed shower, but a bathtub as well. No more ... read more

Geo: 29.65, 91.1 No one slept well last night. All of us, including our guide, were feeling the effects of living at such a high altitude. I thought that my slight headache and racing heartbeat were because I had not followed Johnny's advice and had overdone activities yesterday, but everyone was feeling the same thing. So I had no regrets, and felt better about stepping out and exploring Lhasa on my own our first day in Tibet. But today we were going to see the Potala Palace! Such an exquisite palace to explore, plus with our extraordinary Tibetan guide, Yarpel, this turned into another afternoon to add to treasured memories. To reach the Palace, we had to go through security, similar to what is now considered normal at airports. And then there were 432 steps to ... read more

Geo: 29.65, 91.1 I am in Tibet! We flew in from Chengdu early this morning, watching stunning views of the Himalayan mountains and distant high, snow-covered pointed peaks as we approached Lhasa. Tibet! On the bus ride from the airport to the city our guide told us he spoke from his heart; I immediately liked him, his gentle nature, his insights into the Tibetan dilemma. But he couldn't say everything I'm sure he wanted to since every tour bus with ten or more people is accompanied by a Chinese policeman. For safety, is the explanation, as many cars and buses go too fast. I think it's for a very different reason. Lhasa is the "City of the Sun." Its elevation is above 12,000 feet, so frequently people get high altitude sickness; we were cautioned to take ... read more

Geo: 30.67, 104.07 I was stuck in the middle seat flying from Xi'an to Chengdu, but when you are bookended by two friends, it can actually be fun--on a short trip. We flew Sichuan Airlines, with very pleasant attendants dressed in gorgeous vibrantly purple Asian style dresses (I would truly love to wear one of those!), but the snack was awful; most people threw it away. No problem: the flight was just a little over an hour so no one starved, especially since we've been eating so well at least for the past ten days. Unlike our guide's warnings, our flight arrived almost on time, although the same flight only a day before was over three hours late, typical for China so we've been told, so apparently we were very lucky. Chengdu has over 13 million ... read more

Geo: 34.27, 108.9 This morning our group visited a laquer factory and shop. I had taken one credit card with me, just in case I found a bracelet or something small that caught my attention and cried out to be bought. But upon entering, our eyes feasted on fine Chinese furniture, furniture from the Qing and Ming dynasties. At this point in our lives, I am trying to release many of our material things (not terribly successfully as of yet), and we certainly do not need more furniture, but oh, there was one chest from the Qing dynasty, made of cherrywood, with inlaid carvings from local jade. The carvings were of flowers and birds, so beautifully created, inlaid not only on the front and top surfaces, but also on the sides. This was an exceedingly beautiful ... read more

Geo: 39.9165, 116.391 On our first full day in Beijing we visited Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. We had time to walk around, although not everywhere as this is the largest public square in the world, 100 acres, able to hold over a million people. I was expecting to pick up the energy of the square, but I just could not feel the presence of any history, the way I did in Berlin when I crossed the bricked lines in front of the Brandenburg Gate where the wall had stood. Here, although there were crowds of people, I felt nothing but the excitement of actually being in this place. There are also gardens planted here; flowers are everywhere in Beijing, adding beauty and a softness to an otherwise basic modern cityscape. Then we crossed into ... read more

Geo: 39.9165, 116.391 Today is Wednesday, but the last time I slept in a bed was on Sunday night. From 10PM Monday until today around noon, I was in airplanes or airports, flying from Boston nonstop to Hong Kong, and then onto Beijing. Cathay Pacific's direct route is good, if you don't like layovers, but it's very hard being contained in a very small seat in an enormous plane for over 15 hours. And then add on another 3+ hours to fly from HK to Beijing. But I am here now; I made it! Just looking out the airport windows at Hong Kong was lovely; mountains and the South China Sea are everywhere out there. One pointy mountain literally stood head and shoulders above the others; I asked airline people what its name was, and at ... read more

Europe » Belgium April 9th 2015

Geo: 51.2089, 3.22424 I am in Bruges, beautiful, medieval Bruges. Wandering through the narrow cobblestone streets, looking up at the churches and towers is like being in a fairy tale, transported to another place, another time. The sun has been shining and the bells singing, ringing out familiar as well as not-so-well-known songs from the 47 bells in the carillon belfry tower, or simply ringing out each quarter hour. Except for the fast moving cars and trucks, vans and bicycles speeding through the narrow streets, I am walking in history, transported to the long ago past. Known as Brugge here, Bruges was built originally as a fortress in the ninth century, with the intention of warding off marauding Vikings, but now it is one of Europe's best preserved medieval cities. We entered Bruges through one of ... read more

Geo: 51.8889, 4.63505 Friday morning we woke up on the canal side of our boat, which turned out to also be the docking side. Just past the canal, in the near distance I could see a dike, with traffic and bicycles rushing past on top. I was surprised I had slept so well even with the ship traveling from Amsterdam to Kinderdijk overnight, as usually the creaking of the boat keeps me awake. So, too excited to eat breakfast, I set out to explore what was in this particular outside world. At the top of the dike was a wonderful sight: the classic, old windmills that I had seen as a child in my geography books when we were studying the Netherlands in grade school! Tons of them, 17 at my count. This is iconic Holland! ... read more
