Geo: 26.9847, 78.1019 Yesterday was the last full day of our tour in India. We are here today as well, but the tour ended after we arrived back in Delhi, so this afternoon is ours to do with what we like, although we are far from any markets or good restaurants, and it is Holi, the ancient Hindu religious festival when people throw paint and water on anyone they can. (This is very similar to Songkran in Thailand, although that holiday is in April, not March.) But even though Holi is also called the festival of colors, I wonder how the paint originally came into play, and what is the significance of the colors? Here the young men paint their faces, their hair, their clothing; this is part of the fun of Holi, a national holiday ... read more

Geo: 27.2156, 77.4902 Of all the wonderful places and palaces I have seen in India there is one thing that has truly impacted my enjoyment of exploring here, and that is that in this country, to all men I must be invisible. At first I thought our guide's only looking at and speaking to my young roommate was an older man thing, where he was infatuated with a young woman and flattered by her attention. This was bothersome, and I mentioned it to him, but he denied it vigorously, and tried, after that, to look at me occasionally to make his point, and when he did, I felt acknowledged, a powerful thing. He is a lovely man, extremely generous and very kind, but although he is a professional guide and is 69 years old, he has ... read more

Geo: 27.8167, 76.7167 It took many hours' driving to get from Udaipur to Kishangahr; we arrived around 5PM, dropped our gear in yet another beautiful old palace hotel; this time it was the Phool Mahal Palace. We are told that Kishangahr used to be named Krishnagahr, after Lord Krishna, but that over time the name morphed to its present one of Kishangahr. We had time enough to wash hands and get oriented, then we went with Singhji and the hotel manager to the large market nearby. Our task was to buy 1000 rupees' worth of school supplies (about $20 US) for a local government school; we would give out these gifts when we visited the school. My roommate and I quickly calculated that for the two classes we were to visit, to be on the safe ... read more

Geo: 24.5823, 73.6882 Udaipur: the Venice of the East, the City of Lakes, the most romantic city in India. These are not undeserved superlatives for this lovely old city. We are staying at the Lake Pichola Hotel, sitting right on one of the largest lakes in India. Our room is absolutely beautiful: ancient different colored glass lamps hanging from the ceiling, a porch opening directly to the water below, a very large bathroom with lots of hot water, and the most wonderfully comfortable beds and pillows. A glittery embroidered Indian quilt hangs over our beds and paintings done by local artists grace the walls, plus I have internet available right in our room! Such luxury. One of the places we visited nearby is the Animal Aid sanctuary. Here any street animal, small or large, can be ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Ranakpur March 9th 2014

Geo: 25.135, 73.447 Our explorations continue through palaces, temples, forts, and small villages. Yesterday we took an audio tour of Ranakpur Temple, one of the five holiest sites for people who follow the Jain religion. This is a huge white temple, three stories high, built in the 15th century. It is made all of marble; it has twenty domes and 1,444 carved marble pillars, no two the same. There is a wishing tree just inside the entrance, but both my roommate and I misunderstood what Singhji told us about its location, so we missed the guaranteed chance of having our wishes made under there coming true. (We will try wishing under another tree here; maybe that will work just as well.) Recently we had lunch in a Bishnoi village with a Bishnoi family. We helped them ... read more

Geo: 20.5937, 78.9629 Yesterday evening we had the pleasure of the Raja's joining us as we headed out into the desert in a 1945 WWII jeep to watch the sunset. The driver and the Raja sat up front, so we slid into the sideways benches behind them. The ride through the desert was not comfortable, but that could have been the rough, mostly unpaved roads or the lack of (or bad) shocks on the old jeep, or a combination of both. But the air buffeting us was lovely; the temperature perfect for an evening ride in the desert. The Raja is a very pleasant man. He greets all guests who come to stay at his palace residence and makes sure they are comfortable and well fed during their visit. He has only been Raja for two ... read more

Geo: 20.5937, 78.9629 I have travelled back in time to the 14 and 1500s. Now we are in a place most visitors to India never come, to the hinterlands of Rajasthan. This time we are staying at Bhadrajun Palace, a 16th century palace as personal guests of the Raja who also lives here with his family; his is the 16th generation to do so. Except for the addition of electricity and running water, this beautiful ancient palace remains much like it was for centuries. Few guests have been lucky enough to stay here, but if that changes, so will the village below. Now we, white Westerners, are unique, an oddity. When we walk through the village the children not only ask, "One for two!" (one photo), but also want to hold our hands, to touch us; ... read more

Geo: 28.0199, 73.3176 Last night we slept in one of the old royal palaces of a Maharajah, the Hotel Basant Vihar Palace. It is another beautiful very old building, gated off and set far back from the crazily noisy, busy road. We heard nothing as we slept last night, not even the stealthy scurrying of the large cockroach I found dead on the bathroom floor this morning. Today my roommate and I plan on exploring this palace before we head out to Singjy's nephew's home for a Rajput family breakfast (vegan: vegetable oil will be used instead of ghee), one that we will help make. The first chappati or naan or roti is always fed to the cow; if a family does not have a cow, it is fed to whatever cow happens to be walking ... read more

Geo: 20.7972, 78.5742 Now I feel like I'm in India! I didn't feel it in the outskirts of Delhi; everything I saw looked like rural Cambodia: the markets, the traffic, the litter and rubbish everywhere, the poverty, the begging. Indian children are also beautiful, but their dark eyes seem liquid, watery. On Saturday my young roommate, Meaghan, and I explored a few malls near Delhi; we had some free time, and Singjy, our guide, suggested we might want to do that, and take the metro back to near our hotel. In the States I hate malls; I never go shopping except at very alternative stores. (Thank you, Bill, for handling all our shopping needs at home!) I truly hate malls, their sterility, their stale air, their horrible lighting, the things for sale that nobody really needs, ... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » Delhi March 2nd 2014

Geo: 28.6137, 77.1834 I arrived at the Delhi airport late Friday night after a surprisingly fairly pleasant day of travelling. One big surprise, on the second flight from Kuala Lumpur to Delhi was that I was in the first row behind first class: lots of leg room, space for overhead luggage, more room to move around, all things passengers now pay extra for when purchasing their tickets. However, I quickly realized that the other three seats adjoining mine were to be occupied by a family of four, including a baby who had made himself known back in the waiting lounge. The flight was about six hours long; we were to arrive before 10PM, so I thought everything would be okay as it was not an overnight flight. The baby turned out to be delightful. He had ... read more
