Europe » Netherlands April 2nd 2015

Geo: 52.3738, 4.89095 Sailing along on our way to Rotterdam from Kinderdijk, I have some downtime to read, sleep, write, or just think, so it seems a good time to write about Amsterdam before impressions all run together and I forget the uniqueness of each place we visit. Every day after lunch I go walking on my own, exploring whatever town or city where we are docked, but unlike other days when the boat sails at night, today, since we are sailing down the river right now, I am captive onboard. The trees are not yet in bloom, but it is so gorgeous seeing the water flow by, the other boats, houses along the shoreline, and living things starting to blossom. Such a gentle, sedate way to travel! On Thursday we were in Amsterdam. It was ... read more

Europe » Netherlands » South Holland » Keukenhof April 1st 2015

Geo: 52.2681, 4.54507 To begin the month of April we went to Annemieke's Pluktuin, a tulip farm. Everyone was invited to pick 10 tulips from their fields, to take back with us to brighten up our cabins in the ship. So much beauty in our arms! I picked ones that were either still closed, or barely opened, thinking that in ten days' time they would all blossom (which they did). I tried to pick pink tulips and purple ones, but also got a yellow, an orange, and a red tulip to take back with me. Finding vases to hold these gorgeous, hopeful flowers was a trick; I used our ice bucket, which served quite well. And after visiting the tulip farm we went to Keukenhof, the 79 acre flower park that was once the kitchen garden ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin March 27th 2015

Geo: 52.5235, 13.4115 Flying to Europe is so easy compared with getting to Thailand or Japan. The first flight, from Boston to Amsterdam, took only six hours; our flight was delayed fifteen minutes because there were such strong tailwinds that we would have arrived too early if we had left on time! So here I am in Berlin, staying in a hotel that was in the former East Berlin. People who are either from Russia, or who have visited there, say this part of Berlin looks very much like Russia, with all the stark, block apartment buildings, and less than artistic architecture. To me it looks grey and unimaginative, at least the parts I have seen in my two days here so far. Our hotel is right next to a former slaughterhouse, all rundown now, broken, ... read more

Geo: 44.9653, -69.1086 It's been a very long, very cold, very snowy winter, the second snowiest winter on record for this part of the world. Our area has received almost three times the expected average amount of snow for the total winter! And I survived staying home for all these frozen months. This was a huge accomplishment for me, one I haven't done in years, but that hadn't been my plan; I had intended to go volunteer in Bali, or Sri Lanka, or India, or to teach a semester in the Philippines, but nothing came clear, nothing was so compelling that I felt excited about rushing to confirm the months I'd be gone, or to book flights. I did pay for expediting my new passport, but that turned out to be wasteful. So, rather than act ... read more

North America » United States » Louisiana » New Orleans July 17th 2014

Geo: 29.9537, -90.0778 In the middle of hot July my youngest daughter and I took a little vacation on her time off between jobs. I love being in Maine during the summer months, and prefer to travel to warm places when it's cold here, but the chance to travel again with her was too wonderful to pass up so, after much decision making and consideration, we made plans to go to New Orleans, and then on to Puerto Rico. We had wanted to go to Guatemala together, but there is a very strange requirement in many countries about passports being valid for six months beyond the time of travel, and my well-used passport will expire in early January of next year, so we were caught in the trap of my either buying another passport 7 months ... read more

Geo: 44.9653, -69.1086 Usually I love celebrations. Whether it's in Peru or Ecuador, being swept up into one of their frequent parades (often with a religious theme), or in Thailand for Songkran, their Water Festival, or in India for Holi, their Festival of Colors, I love joining in with happy people laughing and singing and dancing. Having grown up in a fair-sized city, yet living in a rural area for a quarter of a century, there are times when I hunger for being part of a huge crowd, walking anonymously through multitudes of people, picking up on the energy a large city intrinsically has and projects. Sometimes I just need to be with people, lots and lots of people. So even though I do not agree with much the US has been doing for many years, ... read more

Geo: 44.9653, -69.1086 Last night as I was getting ready to go to bed my ears focussed on something that I had given up on hearing around here ever again: the peepers were singing! Their chorus was as robust as it had ever been, but April 30 is the latest I have ever heard them in the 26 years we have lived here. Usually they sing at the end of the first full week in April, or just slightly later; one year they began on April 1, very early. I was so happy I couldn't fall asleep; I only wanted to listen, and be thankful that they haven't all died --or been killed-- off. Such a simple joy, but profound in the significance of its ongoing absence. It rained last night; maybe the peepers were waiting ... read more

North America » United States » Maine April 21st 2014

Geo: 44.9653, -69.1086 Today is my birthday. Another ride around the sun completed. For as many years as I can remember, April 21 has always been a beautiful day, and today was no exception. I have always felt lucky that I was born in late April, a month of true spring, blossoming trees and flowers, the singing of the peepers, delicate scents to delight the senses, a softness in the air, the reawakening of the earth. Unfortunately, this is not true in April in Maine; it will take another three weeks until we see evidence of all this new life unfolding, and I am totally impatient waiting for winter to release us from its awful grip, especially this year even though I wasn't here for most of it. My youngest daughter came home for this Easter/birthday ... read more

Geo: 44.9653, -69.1086 How quickly I have slid into the rhythms of being home! I have been back in the US for five days now, and sometimes it feels as if I had never left. Everything here is the same, except for three things: our house is a lot dustier, we are encased in and surrounded by several feet of snow, and now we have only six cats, as dear Ursa died in January. We'll ignore the first one, as it is self-explanatory, but I will focus on the next two, one at a time. Of course I had heard of the hard winter northern New England was having; other parts of the US were hit hard too, but where we live the amounts of snow and cold temperatures were unprecedented, record breaking. In our part ... read more

Geo: 44.9653, -69.1086 I am home. Home: all the images and comforts that word conjures! After almost four months of constant international travel (there was a break for December) I left Delhi, India one morning at 11AM and by 8PM that evening was in Boston, back in the USA. 17 hours of flight time, 4 good movies, 2 Sherlock Holmes 21st century BBC productions, lots of interesting British Airways food, what felt like miles of walking through both the Delhi and Heathrow airports, saying "Happy Holi" (in India) at least a million times, saying "Happy St. Patrick's Day" (in Boston) fewer times, gaining 9 1/2 hours (from India) from heading west around the globe, seeing my luggage appear among the first few on the baggage carousel, and upon exiting the inner airport seeing my husband and ... read more
