Europe » France August 1st 2016

Geo: 43.9486, 4.80597 It is August already, and our last days on this tour are being spent in ancient Avignon. I have wanted to come here for decades, since a slightly older friend of mine (she was a junior in college, but I was still in high school) spent a semester studying in southern France. Her travels were unreachable for me back then, impossible financially, and, at that time in my life, mentally as well, although I could vividly imagine all the wonders she described, places that I dearly wanted to experience for myself. As a teenager the way I travelled during the summers was by hitchhiking, expanding my borders by hitchhiking all the way north to Canada, and south to Kentucky, with friends I'd met (as a counselor) at summer camp or even a few ... read more

Europe » France July 31st 2016

Geo: 44.0563, 4.83163 As of last night we are in Chateauneuf du Pape, in the region of Provence. Our boat has docked in a most beautiful spot on the Rhone River, pulled into what looks like a little byway where no other boats could possibly moor. At least for awhile. And we are on the river side! So lucky this time, as we look out over a green peninsula on the other side, fish jumping, no trace of civilization, and no lights. Such a gift! I kept the door/window open so I could look out at the beauty of the night whenever I awoke, which was frequently, as lightning storms played over us while most passengers slept. It was a glorious, happy night. But this morning I awoke to noise, and saw another boat pulling up ... read more

Europe » France July 27th 2016

Geo: 45.7673, 4.83433 After our walking tour of Vieux Lyon this morning, Bill and I left the group and stayed in town, exploring more of this lovely city again on our own. We had already been here for a day and a half last Friday and Saturday, before we met up with our fellow travellers on the cruise, and so we felt we knew the city a bit, at least from Part-Dieu to the Rhone River and then to the Saone beyond. Having already walked through Place des Jacobins and Place Bellecour, we decided to take the funicular up to see Notre-Dame de Fourviere, the lovely cathedral high on a hill that is a focal point from many places in the city. This cathedral was built to protect the people of Lyon during the Franco-Prussian War; ... read more

Europe » France » Burgundy » Tournus July 25th 2016

Geo: 46.5656, 4.90841 This is the first time I've taken a tour with Vantage Travel, and each morning it seems we start off the day with a bus and walking tour plus a wine tasting, but of course we are in France. Getting used to wine at 10AM is an acquired taste, but one that's been quite easy to incorporate. Today we are in Tournus, having sailed south from Chalon-sur-Saone, a really lovely city that neither Bill nor I had heard of before taking the train there. In fact, we had never even heard of the Saone River, nor knew how to pronounce its name. It turns out to rhyme with Rhone, so that's very easy to remember. The Saone River is a very beautiful river, so it's unfortunate that few Americans know of it. Travelling ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Midlothian » Edinburgh July 21st 2016

Geo: 55.9503, -3.18761 It has been a week since we flew to Scotland, and I am trying to remember what all we loved about Edinburgh. The Castle, Tron Kirk, George Heriot's School, and Greyfriars Kirk all stand out in memory since they are some of the impressive castles and cathedrals that delight the eye upon entering Edinburgh. Simply walking around looking at these marvelous structures is exciting and uplifting. And there are stories galore about body snatchers, grave robbers, ghosts, people who survived hangings, an underground city of the dead, haunted graveyards, all of which tend to lend a mysterious air to the city. And for Harry Potter fans visiting Edinburgh is a must! It is easy to understand why the medical school needed cadavers for their students to study anatomy, and therefore many freshly dead ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff July 20th 2016

Geo: 51.4813, -3.1805 Setting aside only one day to explore Cardiff, Wales was probably not the best scheduling we could have done, but there were so many places we wanted to go, and even then we ended up not going to Ireland or North Ireland this time simply because of so many days away from home. So we needed to squeeze both Wales and Scotland in. The first thing that hit us was the chilly, very windy weather! We experienced so many different weathers in one day that it felt like the old Shakespearian description of April (very badly paraphrased): if you don't like the weather, wait a minute. This also applies to Maine in April, and obviously also to Cardiff any day throughout their summer. No summer heat here, although people did tell us that ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London July 19th 2016

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236 We have three days to play in London, one of which was totally eaten up by taking a tour of Windsor Castle, the ancient Roman baths, and visiting Stonehenge. That was a fine day, although a little long on the bus. My old refrain: I would have loved to have had more time in each of those places! Plus I thought we would be able to enter the inner circle of the stones at Stonehenge, but learned that that hasn't been allowed for many years. We did find out that on the two solstices people are allowed into the center. On the summer solstice they can stay and camp overnight, watching the sunset late in the evening, and greeting Old Sol as it rises over the horizon. How magnificent that must be! But ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London July 17th 2016

Geo: 51.5002, -0.126236 It is 8:30PM and I am past ready for bed. Last night was spent on a plane flying to Heathrow on British Air; the airline was much better this time, friendlier stewards and stewardesses, and providing the vegan food I had requested. The last time I flew on BA they had no food at all for me and Laila (my vegan daughter) to eat, so as we were held captive on their craft, not entirely faking trying to look very hungry, they borrowed one banana from first class and presented it to the two of us on a china plate, along with two forks. A very interesting "solution" to their problem! That was years ago, and thus I have stayed away from British Air until last night, unable to find a better deal ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest June 28th 2016

Geo: 47.4984, 19.0408 This is the second morning I've woken up in Hungary. Outside my window is ... the window of another boat. It is so close that if we could open these windows I could touch theirs, a very unpleasant docking. But those who have cabins on the other side are enjoying (at least I hope they are!) sunny views of the stunning Parliament building, overlooking the boat-crowded Danube. But soon I will leave to continue exploring Budapest; this is our last day here and I have so many things I want to see. Budapest's name came into being in 1873 when the three cities of Buda, Pest, and Obuda (Old Buda) joined into one large, lovely city, becoming the capital of Hungary. Buda is on the right bank of the Danube River, hilly, green, ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Slavonia » Vukovar June 26th 2016

Geo: 45.3441, 19.0109 While we sleep at night, the boat calmly and surely makes its way forward, heading northwards on the Danube. I awoke to a continual, peaceful scene, verdant foliage on the far bank as we leisurely rolled along. It was very early, not yet 5AM, but again the sun was shining; what beautiful weather we have had here! Soon little villages appeared, then bigger buildings, and I knew we were soon to dock in Vukovar, Croatia, where the boat would pass through customs. Once we were secured, I quickly dressed, wanting to go out for another delightful early morning walk at my own fast pace, not hampered or hindered by people who move along slowly and gracelessly, and yet who do not like anyone passing them by. Plus I enjoy moving quickly; it is ... read more
