I haven't really spoken much about the type of work that I have been doing here in Africa. Over the past 2 months Rabina and I have been working in the classrooms at Agogo APTC Practice Primary. We help the teachers by teaching lessons and marking. I have been able to work with both new teachers and student teachers as well by introducing some different teaching methods, classroom management strategies and visuals that can be useful in the classroom. For our child speak pen pal project component we are still waiting for letters to arrive from Canada so that we can respond. We have started our afterschool project which includes building a library and starting a school newspaper. The school has really jumped on board and has cleared out a room for us to use. It ... read more

Let me just preface this blog with how much I would love to be able to add pictures. Unfortunately, my camera is broken beyond repair. I am sharing Rabina's now, but she has forgotten the cable that connects her camera to computers back in Canada. Ah such is life... Anyway, where has the time gone? By the end of this week, I will have been in Ghana for 2 months - just under the half way mark. It is also just over a month till exams start and then the Christmas break begins. I am quite excited because during this time I get to start my own holidays - almost a month to see Ghana. Rabina, Shanti and I have been planning away - with plans to go up north before Christmas. This part of Ghana ... read more

Unfortunately and luckily, I have now left Accra and am back in Agogo. It is funny how I love to visit the city but always feel a sense of relief when we return to our village. After being in Ghana for seven weeks now, Agogo really feels like home. The village has a certain calmness to it that Accra definitely lacks. The rainforested mountains that encircle our town gives it almost a cozy feel - especially in the early morning mist. While I lack the amenities that are available in Accra such as the internet and supermarkets - I find I don’t really miss them once back in Agogo. Who knows - maybe this girl who was brought up in the city is really a small town girl at heart! On our way back from Accra, ... read more

As I was eating lunch in a restaurant today, all of a sudden Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" came on to the radio. As I walked down the street after buying some coconut later on, what did I hear? "The Power of Love" by Celine Dion. And finally as I drove back to the hotel what do you think I heard? You guessed it - Celine Dion. Just one of the many unusual things that I have observed here in Ghana. Who would have thought that if Celine really wants to end her Las Vegas career, she could start another in Ghana. Right now I am in Accra - which means FAST internet! Quite exciting for myself the addict... Or at least it feels like it has been forever. However I have spent most ... read more

It has been over a week since we have had internet… In Agogo, we have learned to not really count on being able to access internet more than once a week. Power outages, holidays, Sundays, early closings all contribute to “no internet today”. But once again, I remind myself that this is Africa. If there was no access in this town, I honestly don’t think it would matter to anyone anyway. People are happy without being attached to the technology we are so accustomed to in Canada. Kids actually play outside! (And we see them everywhere!) Most people don’t have technology beyond a cell phone - and are quite content. Some children have gameboys - but they are few and far between. TV watching is for the wealthy or when you go to the local restaurant ... read more

“Rain, rain, go away, come again another day!” This has been the rhyme in my head and on the lips of my school children for the past few weeks. The rainy season is upon us in Agogo. The weather brings wet humid rain storms almost every day and of course, mosquitoes. Everyone is concerned that I am going to get malaria and ask me constantly if I am taking my medication and spraying myself. At first, my caretaker thought that all my moles and freckles were in fact mosquito bites. He was quite relieved when I showed him the difference. Along with the mosquitoes, I have also given up the hope of ever having fully dry laundry for the next month or so. We are told that hopefully by November we should be entering the dry ... read more

Well, a whole lot has happened since my last post on Sunday - without much access to internet - and it looks like I won't have fast internet access for awhile! Anyway, this past Monday, we started to split off and move to our respective towns where we will be doing our internships. On Monday we drove to Awisa, a small village which is about 3 hours away from Accra and is near the district capital of Akim Oda. This is where we dropped of Shanti where she will be completing her assignment as a ChildSpeak coordinator. On the way back Rev. Wayoe, Rabina, George our driver and I stopped at a small roadside restaurant to eat. We decided to try fou fou for the first time which is a common Ghanaian dish - especially ... read more

After attending an African church service this morning, I have decided that it definitely deserves some space on this blog. After spending time with Rev. Wayoe this past week, Shanti, Rabina, and I thought it would be a nice gesture to attend a church service with her. Christianity is very important to most Ghanaians and the majority go to church and expect everyone else to as well. So this morning we headed off to the Newtown Presbyterian Church in Accra with Rev. Wayoe. Unfortunately, we weren't going to her home church as she was attending a sending off service for another minister. We were warned in advance that the service would be much longer than we are used to in Canada - we were in service for a full 3 and a half hours (9-12:30) and ... read more

Since Rabina, Shanti and I have the weekend off we decided that we would try something new and hit up Osu which is the tourist area of Accra. According to our beloved Bradt guide there is a 6km walk that starts in James town at the lighthouse and ends in the Osu area. Well, things definitely got off to an interesting start. Our taxi broke down before we were able to make it to the lighthouse - but we figured we would just walk the rest of the way. It was definitely an eye opener being in this area of town which was much more residential. As we waded our way through the streets we felt like the pied piper with a bunch of kids following us the entire way yelling "how are you?" to us. ... read more

Soooo, I am not quite sure what my internet situation is in Agogo, I am maximizing my time here in Accra. Today has been an adventure to say the least. Despite it being the rainy season right now we hadn't experienced any rain - until today when we experienced a very wet morning. We had left the hotel with a whole list of errands to run before we met with Rev. Wayoe. First on the agenda was finding a bank that we could actually use our debit cards at. After a rather unsucessful attempt at the big shiney western looking barclays - we realized that it was going to be a little harder than first anticipated. We heard that the EcoBank would probably accept our cards so set off trying to find one. It was amazing ... read more
