Well I have finally arrived in Africa! After over 30 hours of travel time it feels good to finally be in Accra. Shanti, Rabina (the other interns) and I arrived on the evening on Sept 8 to a warm welcome from Rev. Wayoe who is our main contact person here in Ghana. She is part of the education department and runs the ChildSpeak program in Ghana. Yesterday we met with her and had a brief introduction whereas today we had a longer orientation where we got to meet some of the other individuals involved in the project. We also got to learn some of the local language (Akan) which is the dialect where we will be living (Agogo). Well, the day has finally arrived - to leave family and friends for six months in Africa. This past week - actually this past summer - has been incredibly busy in preparation. With weddings, camping trips, and other obligations, I have found myself scrambling to make sure I have the necessary travel documents, visas, vaccinations, etc. all required for my trip despite having two months off! Over the past four days I have fully moved out of an apartment and hopefully packed properly for my travels. Today, I leave for Calgary where I will spend a week in training for the ChildSpeak program.
