few quick questions
Hey man. Loved your blog, well written and gave me a few good laughs. My partner and I recently moved to Bangtao and I was just wondering where this gym was located? Is it directly behind a small bodega on a really small side street about a 10 minute walk from Nok & Jo's? There are only 2 gyms I have found in this area but I am looking to start muy thai but I went to this one gym right around the corner and he was trying to charge me 600 bht per 1.5 hours. His English wasn't great. Anyway, just curious which gym it was exactly. Thanks!

That's the gym!
Hey Brianne, welcome to Phuket! Wonderful place to live. Bang Tao Muay Thai is in fact where I went, the instructor's name is Rang, he is a sweet man and an incredibly talented athlete. Tell him you know Kristin and John (the American English teachers from soi 8) and he may cut you a deal. Also, if you are ever in Nok and Jo's please send them my regards! Absolutely fantastic people, those two. I hope you have a blast, feel free to shoot me a personal message at kkelly@rollins.edu if you need anything else at all...

Thank you
That's sounds like a great trip, I would definitely love to go white water rafting in the canyon sometime! You've probably never heard of the trails we took because they are only known by the people who actually work in the canyon (it was like a VIP access tour!). I will be writing about blog about Hong Kong soon Love to you and Bob <3

Blending work and travel...
I've been very fortunate having a profession (engineering) that included plenty of overseas job opportunities. My kids also wanted to work overseas, but they were unlikely to follow my career path so before they went to college I listed the various majors that had better odds for finding an overseas job. Both of my daughters chose education...teaching elementary school at an international school or Department of Defense Dependents School (much better pay and conditions than teaching English as a Second Language!). Neither has pursued that route, however. My son taught English in Thailand for his gap year, just as you did, and is now studying international law in Wales. He's hoping to live overseas the rest of his life. The DoD has a wide variety of overseas jobs in addition to teachers...look at https://www.usajobs.gov/ and enter the type of job and country, and see what is listed. Business is another path, with companies preferring singles as the cost of international schools for children is prohibitive. And then there is the Foreign Service, but that is highly competitive; hiring from selective universities. My niece is married to an FSO, and has been in Bogota, Colombia and Bern, Switzerland, and is now back in DC. What is your educational background? Perhaps I can provide more specifics for your situation.

You've been so helpful
Thank you for all that info! I majored in Marine Biology, which is my true passion (in addition to travel). I am moving to San Diego to try and find a job, gain experience, and then start looking internationally for opportunities. All it requires is that I'm close to the ocean, so my options are plentiful! I simply struggle with the desire to live out of a backpack, off the grid, constantly on the roam, and stationing somewhere and building a "career". But life is about balance so I am just to find a way to combine my two passions :)

Thank you for sharing your personal journey...
I look forward to reading your blogs about your growth and future plans, which I hope includes travel.
15th December 2013

Thank you
My plans include much more travel. I am still trying to figure out how to balance vagabonding and building a "career". Any tips? I know you've managed to blend work and travel very well in your lives!

Good to know
Good to know that you feel you have grown and that you are happy with knowing that you have. I am aware of change all the time but I don't know how I feel about most of it. Funny. Good luck in all you do. Know that I am always with you and here for you! Love, mom

Thanks for sharing your reflections...
on your two years of being abroad. I also found returning to the States to be more culture shock than going overseas. There's nothing like having to read the McDonald's menu to decide what to order. I hope on your new job you get a couple weeks vacation per year. Please blog about those, no matter how close to home they are. And drop us a line when you get this thing figured out!

Welcome Home!
Hi Kristin, Your blog is so insightful. You obviously gave it a lot of thought. You are a strong, intelligent woman, give yourself time to absorb the experiences and lessons. The only thing constant in life ...is change. We just need to be up for it.

seeking
I think we all spend our life seeking to understand ourselves, others and our world, better. You just have taken it to a wider playing field. Staying "home" doesn't have to be a pause in the adventure, just a different sort of adventure. I know you will find more roads to travel, both near and far, and I will be with you somehow on every one. I love you! mom

We lived in Brussels for eleven years...
so really loved your picture of the double fried frites and mayo! In the States we still ask for mayo with our fries. And you are forgiven.

You've experienced and learned in one year...
what others take a lifetime. It's alright to get sick of traveling and going home is wonderful, but at heart you are a traveler. Don't give that up.

Maps
There is a map on your page with the title of Wanderings. It shows where you have lived and traveled. When did you live in Alaska? or does it just group it with the US? Look how much of the earth is left for you to explore! Your travels will never be over, even if they are not distant. You certainly have had an interesting year. I love you!
