I've spent about 2 weeks here at Baan Dada now, and having a great time! Nothing here is very organised, and nothing is ever on time, so we're having to be pretty flexible. For New Year's Day we all, even the kids!, had a lie in, being tired from walking in circles all evening. Then we spent the day playing with the kids, and in the afternoon we headed over to Songkhalia Guest House to perform. For once, everything went to plan, nothing was forgotten and we were only half an hour late. Afterwards we headed into Sangkhla so the kids could spend their money, and me, Emily and V got the nicest banana pancakes. They were basically some form of doughy stuff, fried with an egg, then cut up and drenched in condensed milk and ... read more

Whilst waiting for the kids to arrive, Gale showed me round the home a bit. They have a boy's house, girl's house, office, schoolroom/library, dining room/kitchen and music room/hall. A 5 minute walk away is the volunteer house, where we were staying, and the place has lots of outdoors stuff as well - climbing frames, a volleyball court and a football/basketball area. Our house is fairly basic, with a 1 out of the 4 toilets having a flushing mechanism, and 1 hot and 1 cold shower. The beds are basically a metal frame with a board across it, or simply a yoga mat on the floor. There are a few thin mattresses (about 1 inch thick) - I ended up folding one in half so it's not very wide but at least I can't feel the ... read more

The next part of my trip was a couple of months volunteering at Baan Dada Children's Home. Baan Dada (Sanskrit for Brother's Place), is an orphanage in North Western Thailand, right on the border with Burma. It's in the middle of pretty much nowhere, with Huay Ma Lai (the nearest village) not even being big enough to get on the map. The closest town is Sangkhlaburi, half an hour away where the kids go to school. There are two 'Dadas' who work round the clock for the kids, and currently 5 volunteers including me. Overall there are 58 kids from both Thailand, and Karen and Mon hill tribes in Burma. This means that many of them are refugees and don't have the legal papers to say that they were born, and so until recently many of ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok December 25th 2010

I arrived in Bangkok at midnight as my plane was delayed - something about half the passengers on the flight were meant to be going to Heathrow, which was having issues with snow. As it was so late, I got a shuttle bus to one of the nearby hotels which was far too expensive, but it had a bed in it so alls good. The following day I headed into Bangkok central, in a taxi which only cost about B200, but the driver was mental - apparently seeming not to notice trivial details like white lines and red lights. Once at Th Khao San (backpacker road), I checked into a much cheaper hotel, and headed out into the city. I ended up spending most of the afternoon gong round the markets in Khao San, which were ... read more

add photos When I arrived in Sydney I discovered that the hostel I booked was actually quite far out of the centre and ended up getting 2 trains and then a bus out to Bondi Beach where I would be staying. When I finally got there I headed into Bondi with a few guys to the other backpackers in the town as they were doing a free meal, and although it was decent food, I think I'm glad I chose the YHA - it's a lot nicer than the other one. The next day me and 2 of the guys hired surf boards for 6 hours (only$15), and went down to Bondi beach to attempt to catch some waves. We ended up failing quite epically, but it was good fun, and occupied most of the day. ... read more

add photos On arrival in Adelaide, I discovered that the Ashes were being held there, as well as a Guns N Roses concert. This unsurprisingly made finding accomodation fairly hard work, though eventually I found a hostel with 1 bed left. I spent the first day looking around the city, and doing boring things like applying for a Thai visa. My second day was quite a lot more interesting, as I went down to Glenelg. It was very sunny and so I spent the morning swimming and jumping off the pier with some surfer guys. Then as the tide came in and the sun started to get blocked out by clouds, we headed back to the beach, where I found a skim board being tossed about in the waves. I asked around, but as noone appeared ... read more

Oceania December 7th 2010

The next stop on my trip was out in the middle of nowhere in a town called Kalgoorlie. To get out there I got the train, which took about 7 hours and didn't go anywhere near as fast as trains in Europe. I had to concentrate on staying awake, as, if I missed the stop at Kal, it was about 5 hours or something crazy til the next stop! However, fairly good trip, and I read most of my book, as after about 10 minuntes of looking out the window the scenery of; sand, sand, more sand, a tree!, sand, more sand (etc etc), got fairly dull. On arrival in Kalgoorlie I met up with Pam and we headed back to her house, met Cookie and Mitsy the cats, and chilled out for the evening. The ... read more

On arriving at Perth airport, I met Chris who I would be staying with for the week, and Melissa, his daughter. They gave me a lift back to Chris' place where I met Ilka (Chris' wife) and their dog: Ali. They were all really lovely people, and had all sorts of crazy luxuries, from a private room with a double bed, and a swimming pool, to conditioner and fluffy towels. That evening Ilka proved to be an awesome cook, making rice with 3 choices of curry, fish, and some weird things which I had almost forgotten about called vegetables. The next day I spent the afternoon in Perth where I ran into 2 girls who I had met in Cairns, and as I had nothing much to do, I went with them to see the new ... read more

The next stop on my trip was Darwin, and the first thing I did was find a backpackers, and then went out to look around the city. Despite getting in at 4 in the afternoon, it was still really hot and sunny, and very humid. Apparently over here it's only about 35 degrees, but they get about 5 degrees added on in humidity factor. The next morning I didn't have much to do so agreed to go out and get breakfast with an Irish guy in my dorm. We ended up at a pub which served alcohol before it did breakfast, but despite this it turned out to be really nice, and fairly cheap. Then I got the bus over to Nightcliffe to look around the markets, which were fairly small and unimpressive. Some guy selling ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Atherton Tablelands » Yungaburra November 14th 2010

Hi again, Seeing as I had about a week left in Cairns and not much to do, I booked onto a tour up to Yungaburra in the Atherton Tablelands. The Tablelands are basically a lot of green, gently sloping hills, all on top of the mountain range, about 1000ft above sea level. To start the tour, Paul picked us all up at about 7am, and took us on a quick tour of Cairns' industrial estate, where we saw some "native wildlife" - the workmen in trucks and working on the road. Paul explained how they can be identified by their hairy faces and florescent jackets (yellow=junior, orange=adult). Every time we passed one Paul would beep his horn and get everyone to wave. Following this we headed out onto the highway, past a "dingo" (pet dog) about ... read more
