On the advice of a friend, I took the free walking tour of the city this morning. Knowing how the free tours operate, I wasn't expecting much, but it did give me some of the highlights in between plugs for their other, not-free tours. Also met a Brit on the tour, got to chatting as he was from Leeds (not far from York, for those of you who need an explanation - York being where I did my MA). Agreed to meet him later to do the beer tour in the evening. After all, it's Munich. And while I'm not a beer fan, when in Ro... Munich... do as all the silly tourists do, right? In between, I found some kids' sized jerseys. Sadly, in white, but in my size nonetheless. After a brief consultation via ... read more

The train from Berlin to Munich took up most of my day. Arrived in Munich close to 4 pm and after dumping my stuff at the hotel, set out on the final leg of the epic jersey hunt. Adidas makes the German national team's jerseys, and there was an Adidas store about a half an hour's walk from my hotel. So, armed with my map, I set out. What should have been fairly easy and straightforward was not. I realized afterwards that trying to cross the road anywhere near Karlsplatz is pointless and that you should really take the subway _under_ the road. Still, I didn't get too lost, and found the store in about 45 minutes (as well as seeing some interesting sites along the way). They... had... nothing. Seriously. Not a football jersey to ... read more

I had sort of intended to go on one of Kate's tours. I brought it up, she looked at her work schedule, and promptly advised against it. She was scheduled to do the Third Reich tour today, which is fine if you're into the Third Reich, but if you are looking for a more general introduction to Berlin, not so much. Instead, she told me which guides from her company would be good to tour with, and also pointed out a partner company that did walking tours. I chose the latter and am quite glad I did. The tour was meant to be a four-hour tour, starting at 10:30. The guide was fabulous, really knew his stuff, and I know we finished more than 30 minutes later than intended. But I'd never have guessed if I ... read more

Taking a slightly later train to Berlin than originally intended has got to be one of the greatest things I've ever done. No getting up stupid early, no rushing about, time for a real sit-down breakfast rather than just grabbing something at the station on the run... Time to change my last 500 Kč bill into Euros (although I still have about 4 euros worth of Czech change that is now useless, but such is life)... Train to Berlin was fine. Not much to write home about. After a couple of weeks in essentially mountainous terrain, it was flat. Pretty, but flat. Kinda like being home, but at the same time so definitely not. As with lots of European countries, you see a lot of really old, beautiful buildings that have fallen into disrepair, and I ... read more

This morning was a bit of a repeat of yesterday... In the sense that the first thing I did was take the tram up to the Castle. This time, however, I bought admission and rented an audioguide for a couple of hours. The tour was fairly interesting, although I have to admit I was kind of disappointed to learn that St. Vitus' cathedral is mostly a 19th and 20th century structure. I was still fascinated by the reliquaries and such, since they were mostly housed in the older sections of the Cathedral, and the tomb/relics of St. Wenceslas was pretty impressive. The one thing I need to figure out, but didn't, was how this Wenceslas fits with the guy who's in the Christmas carol. I'm sure Google will find me the answer. The castle also housed ... read more

Sad to leave Slovakia behind, but I have been looking forward to Prague for while, too. The train from mid-Slovakia to Prague is... Not quite the milk run, but getting there. It's certainly not a huge distance, but nevertheless took from just before 9 am to well after 4 pm. Maybe it's just me, but if your train is running behind, wouldn't it make sense to cut the length of some of the stops? Y'know, instead of 14 minutes, maybe 10 or even 12? I'm sure there's some sort of logical reason for why they can't though... At least, I'd like to think there is. Anywho, arrived in Prague, remembered belatedly that they aren't on the Euro (as I later discovered, given that the Czech Republic isn't on the Euro, there are exchange offices _everywhere_ - ... read more

Today has been emotional, to say the least. It started out with a trip to Orava Castle, an absolutely beautiful castle/palace built on a hill in the Orava region, bits dating back as far as the 13th century, and still fairly intact. It was another sort of museum where you followed a guide around from room to room, without being able to wander freely, but I can certainly see why in this case. Not so much to protect from theft or anything as to prevent people from getting lost (the place is huge!) or hurt (there are still open archaeological excavations on site). Not only that, but it was raining, and wood and stone have a tendency to get slippery when wet. Next we ventured on to Podbiel, and stopped at the town hall. The travel ... read more

Started the morning by heading out to Pustý Hrad ("deserted castle") just outside Zvolen this a.m. Ruins of a castle that's been around since Roman times. The catch? An uphill climb. A change in elevation of more than 200 m (yeah, I know that's not that huge, but it's well bigger than anything we've got in Edmonton). It was a hike. And I mean a real hike. If we'd managed to stick to the path it probably wouldn't have been such a hike, but at some point we ended up losing it and more or less scrambling up the hill until we found it again. It was pretty fun, actually. If I ever come back here, I may have to try some more hiking and general outdoorsy-ness. Totally worth the climb (which took about 35 minutes ... read more

I lied. I'm beginning to understand Slovakian. At least enough to catch the bits that are similar to English or French. There are enough that I can now tell when Marian us talking about his English-speaking (or French) Canadian tourist, and the odd other word here and there (allegory of Venus was one I caught today). I wonder if Rosetta Stone does Slovakian. Maybe I could pick up some more... Today was spent wandering in and around Banska Stiavnica. Not far from my hotel was a memorial/prayer column , the plague column. Rather more Baroque than I'd thought it would be, but then, there was more than one wave of plague starting in the early 1300s, and finishing in the 1600s or perhaps even later, I'm not sure. I should really have asked. Ah well, maybe ... read more

This morning it was out to a few sites in the various districts of Bratislava. The first stop was a monument to the liberation of Slovakia after the WWII. I am sort of ashamed that I don't know more about the history of this area. And I have to admit that I find it hard to think of switching from Nazi occupation to Russian-led Communism as liberation, but it's an adjustment I'll have to make, mentally. Next stop was the Sandberg, a geological formation that is made entirely of sandstone, and that preserves a lot of the geological history of the area. Pretty nifty! Another running joke is how fast I'm going through sites here, as the average tourist is a) a fair bit older than me and b) not as fit (thank-you, Running Room!). And ... read more
