I am in the midst of the preparatory stages for Morocco while also sitting in the reflection stages of Spain and I only have one day to complete both. It is taking everything I have to not pick up my travel book on Morocco and start getting ready, but I made a rule that I cannot move on to the next country until my last is complete. That means that the blog is finished, I have reviewed all the restaurants I ate at, recorded all my expenses and completed my notes. To be honest, I cannot believe that port number one is finished. A little over a year ago I had just sent in my application for this program and I was awaiting my acceptance and now in what seems like way less than a year ... read more

The ship is certainly rocking back and forth, back and forth, and you guessed it, back and forth. It is interesting though that after three or four days I don’t even notice it. I have not experienced seasickness in the slightest, just extreme drowsiness in my cabin and in classes (hence I take a lot of naps and nearly fall asleep in the boring classes). I also notice the rocking when I am trying to run on the treadmill; it has become a game really, I fight to stay on the treadmill because I keep getting thrown into the wall or on to the side that is not the moving band in the middle. Most of my workout just comes from trying to stay on the treadmill, never mind the running. Right now I am sitting ... read more

We were informed tonight that we are on a “ship,” not a boat and a “voyage,” not a cruise. So all of you will refer to my educational voyage as such from here on out, even though I fully expect it to have many similarities to a party boat/cruise. I am actually here, sitting on my bed, in my room, gently rocking back and forth in the waves (luckily no sea sickness yet) and listening to the sweet rumble of the engines (they are just below my room). Mimi, I am pretty sure you would request a room change! I am going to look at it as part of this experience and I would laugh if by the end I need the sound to sleep to. I am in a room with three other girls; it ... read more

So here we are, the night before I leave on my four month journey around the world. Wow, I can't believe it is finally here. Packing went fairly smoothly (not too much fighting with Mom), although some of my small extras had to go to Jeremy's house to be packed by him. More than anything I am interested to see if my bags are under the 50 pound weight limit, normally one of my two when I travel is over by a few pounds. Also, don't forget how much I am going to have to pay to check my luggage; when I just came home from Cape Cod, I paid $40 for my two bags on Delta, so we will see how much it will be on Continental. I feel a little less prepared for this ... read more

So, first I have to thank my cousin Kevin for setting up wireless at Mimi’s house so that I can bring you this blog. I know this is late, but I promise it has been written, I just did not have Internet to update. I have asked my mom to write a guest blog about Cholula, Puebla, and Mexico City since I have already written on them. I thought it might be nice to get a second opinion on these places in Mexico. Before I add her section in I just want to say that we spent two weeks in Mexico, 2 days in Cholula/Puebla, 2 days in Mexico City, 2 days in Barra de Potosí, 3 days in Troncones Beach, and 3 days in Zihuatanejo. “I think I am supposed to guest blog on Mexico ... read more

Okay, so I am back in Mexico and I will shortly be updating all of you with what has been going on on this trip, but first I would like to post a blog I wrote a while ago about some of mi recuerdos de Cholula (my memories of Cholula). I am sitting on the plane on making my way back to the States and I just realized that this is the end of my Mexican adventures for some time. When we took off the sun was just rising over Malinche and it was beautifully clear; I had never noticed that it looked like woman lying down, very interesting. Anyways as I listen to my new Mexican club mix that was made for my departure, I want to take the time to write down the places ... read more

It very much disheartens and saddens me to inform all of you that I will be returning to the United States this coming Monday, June 4th, almost four weeks before my expected time of arrival. We will be missing out on Veracruz and our weeklong service project in Cuetzalan, but it was decided that it was better to be safe than sorry. The truth is you never know what it is going to be like in four weeks. Although sometimes my mom thinks she is God, unfortunately even she cannot tell me what is going to happen tomorrow. So at this point in time I am ready for my departure; we have had a difficult past four days. For those of you who are not bombarded with fifty emails daily on this matter, it started on ... read more

North America » Mexico » Chiapas » Palenque April 21st 2009

Some people classify Mexico as a developing country, while many other people place Mexico in the developed or at least almost developed nation category. Mexico is a huge country with such a variance and a disparity among its people. If you spend time here in Puebla, Cholula, Mexico City, or Oaxaca, even San Cristobal in Chiapas, you will find some money, upscale shopping, modern buildings, and area that could very easily pass for part of the United States, but 4 hours later you could visit a small indigenous village and then you know you are in a different world. For a second you may feel out of place, like in San Juan de Chamula, where you are surrounded by begging Mayan children, women, and men, or you could feel quite comfortable and at home in for ... read more

About 14 days ago, I embarked on a journey with just my small Northface backpack and my camera, not really knowing what lie ahead of me. Ok, I read some blogs and travel guides and I did know a good deal about the area I was heading to, but what I did not know was anything about the learning experiences I was going to have and the crazy adventures I was going to go on while in the jungle of Mexico on the border of Guatemala. Also, side note: I had the least amount of luggage and the smallest bag out of everyone; however, that does not mean that I want to always travel like this, it just means that I can. (Do not get any ideas Mom). Keep in mind all of you as you ... read more

Just a quick update to let you all know that I made it back to Cholula sana y salva (safe and sound). It was a great trip overall; it definitely had its ups and downs, which I will get into when I start the blogs on the week, but overall we saw some amazing things and had some amazing experiences. I am sure it will take me a couple of blogs to get all of the information up here. I am going to include some pictures of my house here in Cholula and a family picture taken the day I left for Chiapas. Hope all is well. ... read more
