Jeez what a nightmare. I guess any international trip has to have at least one. So we got to the airport today (where the nightmares always happen). And we walked up to the desk to collect our tickets from Hong Kong to Beijing, then we have another flight the same day from Beijing to Nanjing. And I had asked the travel agencies, over and over and over, "do I need ANYTHING extra for travelling to Hong Kong and Macau?" "No." ok, well you do, so be warned! When I ordered my visa I ordered a SINGLE ENTRY visa. And who would've known that the Chinese consider Hong Kong to be separate diplomatically? I guess I should've known, but the travel agencies didn't either. I tried arguing the point with the lady at the ticket counter. "You ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Hong Kong Island August 15th 2010

Today was our day for touring Hong Kong. Our hotel is on the Kowloon Peninsula, north of Hong Kong island and this morning we took the subway underwater to Hong Kong. We got off and searched for Victoria Park, the biggest public park in Hong Kong. Once we found it we walked around inside for about an hour, it's a really big park with trees and jogging paths, a swimming pool, a courtyard, tennis, basketball, and soccer courts. I had my second breakfast in a small restaurant right outside. Some authentic dim sum and beef with rice. We didn't really have a plan for seeing Hong Kong, so we just played it by year. All the locals speak Cantonese and usually they either speak English or Mandarin so either Jie or I can communicate with them. ... read more

Asia » Macau » Macau August 14th 2010

Wow Macau has a lot more things to do than I thought (gambling). We saw a ton and I feel exhausted. We took a ferry which I thought was going to be a really quick trip. But I actually had to go through immigration and customs, getting more stamps on my passport :) The ferry ride was an hour long and it was really comfortable. There were about 6 or 7 columns of seats, with 2 in each column. And the seats were really comfortable. I thought you would be able to walk around on the deck, but no :( you couldn't. The ferry station was kind of similar to an airport. But it was also a mall. (there are sooo many more malls in Hong Kong and Macau then I had thought originally, they are ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon August 13th 2010

This morning we woke up at 5:30am to dodge traffic to the airport, and it actually worked. It was a 4 hour flight from Beijing to Hong Kong, so I tried to sleep but didn't end up getting very much. By the time we were flying lower, and I could see the Ocean, I didn't want to sleep. The view from the plane was amazing. Most travellers are probably used to similar scenes, but I'm not. I loved seeing the islands on the way to Hong Kong, tiny islands with mountains all over them. Then we saw Hong Kong. I had no idea there were so many mountains! I expected the huge skyscrapers of course but from the air you see that the mountains have an even more dominant appearance. We flew into Kowloon, Bruce Lee's ... read more

We had an extra day in Beijing today, before we leave for Hong Kong, so I did some research and found a really cool Temple we haven't seen yet (since we saw all the major attractions). It's called the Lama Temple. "Lama" is Tibetan for "chief" or "high priest" (hence: The Dalai Lama). It's a temple for Buddhism (Lamasery) and a some monks still use it. It was built in 1694 during Qing dynasty and is the best preserved and biggest lamasery in Beijing. It was originally built as a living place for the Prince (3rd Emperor of Qing), until 1744 when it was converted fully into a lamasery (Buddhist temple). I think it was my favorite temple so far because I really love Tibetan culture and this temple was the closest thing to real Tibetan ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Tian'anmen August 11th 2010

One of the buildings that sits in Tian'anmen Square is Mao Zedong's mausoleum. I'm actually surprised we were able to see it because tons of mishaps have stopped us so far; I got sick, its only open from 8-12 in the morning, and today it was raining, but we toughed it out anyways. Mao obviously didn't want an American visiting his body, but after waiting for an hour, in the line that loops around the building, we got in. After climbing the front stairs into the building you see a statue of Mao in the first room. People stop to give flowers and some of them bow to the former revolutionist. The line breaks into two, left and right, around the statue to go into the next room, "the solemn hall of last respects". There sits ... read more

Asia » China » Shaanxi » Xi'an August 9th 2010

I haven't written in a while because we just got back from our weekend trip to Xi'an, and I didn't have my laptop with me. I also got sick finally. I was expecting to get sick at least once here from the food, or water, or weather, or pollution, or all of them. But I thought it would have been sooner. The good thing is it only lasted for a day. The bad thing is, I couldn't go to the gym that day. haha just kidding, but really. But I'm fine now, I got sick two days before we went to Xi'an so I was fine there and I'm ok now. I had to have a day of recovery and not too much strenuous activity, the day after, so we still haven't seen Mao's body! I ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Great Wall of China August 3rd 2010

Today was our day to see the Great Wall of China! Unfortunately the traffic was horrible in the mountains and came to a standstill for about 2 hours because of a wreck but we got there and climbed it! We went to the Ba Da Ling entrance and climbed the highest side (you can go left or right). I had no idea how steep some parts of the wall are but I guess it has to be since its on top of a mountain. Some of the ramparts we walked were so steep that not many people would even try them, but we went all the way to the end (they block off some of the wall, so we came to one of these parts). It was great, probably my favorite place in China so far. ... read more

I can't trust Jie's mom anymore! She's always saying "eat more eat more" and then when I'm full she says "one more one more" and then the host of the dinner kept piling food on my plate and now I am way too full haha. It was a great restaurant though, it was in a hotel that has a lot of famous politicians and really rich people come in and its got the best duck in Beijing. We had the roast duck and it was so delicious. You can actually see the other ducks roasting in a furnace too. You have to be a member of a special club to get into the restaurant and for the duck you have to order it 3 days ahead. The meal came out to 3000 Yuan. :0 but the ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Summer Palace July 31st 2010

The Old Summer Palace known as the Gardens of Perfect Brightness, were destroyed and burned down by Anglo French forces in 1860. The Garden of Clear Ripples (renamed the Summer Palace after it was destroyed by Anglo French forces) was constructed between 1115-1234 during the Jin dynasty, was a luxurious garden that the Emporer would visit during the summer. We visited both the old and new Summer Palaces of Beijing today and had a lot of fun seeing them both. Definately my favorite gardens so far. The Summer Palace was situated around a lake, (not polluted! the first body of water in China I have seen yet that was unpolluted!) and you could walk all the way around it. We didn't have time but I'd like to see the rest of it if I ever come ... read more
