Hello friends! My new classes started on Monday. The biggest challenge is not necessarily the difficult material, it is adjusting to yet another school system. Let me tell you what I have learned so far. 1) Professors can hold class on days when class is not scheduled. For example, I don’t have classes on Fridays, however, my professor decided that we would have class this morning since the course didn’t start until Wednesday. We also have class on Fridays that follow a school holiday to make up for the class we miss. 2) There are not any printers in the library. How do we print off the readings for class you ask? We go to a copy room in the university, tell the worker which class we want papers for, choose which documents they need to ... read more

On Saturday morning Hayley and I met up with the other 6 API students and our director, Juan, at the train station in Cadiz. It only took two hours to get to Sevilla (or Seville for English speakers) and it was well worth it. Sevilla is incredible. The first thing we did after checking in to our hotel was a three-hour bike tour. Everything about the city was beautiful, the parks, the classic roman style houses, the modern architecture, beautiful botanic gardens filled with horse-drawn carriages, a variety of flowers and hundreds of trees. The word I find that best describes Sevilla is romantic. As one of the oldest cities in Europe, it has a rich history with Roman ruins that date back as far as 207 B.C. It was fascinating to see the Cathedral, which ... read more

September 19th 2011 Today was a difficult day for my roommate Hayley. She lost her 17-year-old brother a year ago to the day. It is really hard for her to be apart from her family right now, but Devin and I have been doing our best to support her. Hayley asked us to go with her to the beach tonight to light a candle in her brother’s honor. When we told Milagros and Jesus where we were going, they insisted that they go with us for support. It was really touching to see two people take on a parenting role to a couple of girls who they haven’t known for more than a few weeks. Jesus told us to think of him as a real father while we are here. When we got to the beach, ... read more

Europe » Gibraltar September 18th 2011

Yesterday, I went to Gibraltar with five of my friends. It was our first trip that wasn't through API so it was an adventure. We rode the bus for three hours from Cadiz to La Linea de Concepcion, which is right on the Gibraltar border. We walked two minutes from the bus station to get to customs, which was an absolute joke. The guy behind the counter didn't even make us open our passports, he just had us show them to him. It is funny how one different Gibraltar is from the town that is two minutes away. Gibraltar is a UK territory, so English is their primary language. I loved their accents! Another thing I love about Gibraltar is their free bus system. We took a bus from customs to the cable cars that would ... read more

On Tuesday after class and lunch, we (the API students) went to the Cadiz museum. The poor little old man showing us around had a throat problem and we couldn’t understand a thing he was saying. It was not one of my favorite places to visit so far. Wednesday morning Hayley and I got up early and met some friends at the Plaza de San Antonio. From there we walked to the train station in New Cadiz to buy bus tickets to the straight of Gibraltar for Saturday morning. We were exhausted when we got back to the house, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that our first packages had arrived!!! I looked like a kid in a candy store and I don’t think I have ever ripped open a taped up box so quickly. ... read more

There are a lot of times where I find myself in what I consider to be a sticky situation in Cadiz. For example, yesterday was September 11, and the U.S. Embassy in Madrid advised us all to stay inside, and not draw any attention to ourselves as Americans. However, yesterday was the annual Airplane Extravaganza in the new part of Cadiz and the whole town was there. The other Americans and I decided to go to the air show and I wore white and blue to show my allegiance to the U.S. and honor those who were affected by September 11th. We spoke English, we didn’t try to blend in, and we craved American food. We simply wanted to be American yesterday. It was a liberating feeling to say the least. I was curious to ... read more

September 8th, 2011 Just to clear up something from my last post for people who didn’t get the joke (cough cough Blake Morton) my roommate and I don’t really make up crazy cockroach dances, that was just my way of telling everyone that we have had a few cockroach encounters since we have been here. Today school seemed to drag on. I really like our teacher, Roberto, because he is great at explaining tough concepts. Today, Hayley and I sat with international students from Germany and Italy between us so we could get to know people from other countries. They came to the beach with us after class, and it is really great talking to them because we don’t have the option of defaulting to English during the conversation. They speak Spanish on the same level ... read more

This morning began with an early morning run around 8. Right before my roommate and I left to go running, we decided to do a little pre-running warm up dance that we like to call La Cucaracha. It goes a little something like this: bend over to put on your tennis shoe, throw your shoe across the room, move your legs up and down one at a time as if the floor is made of hot coals and scream "CUCARACHA!". Then, your partner should proceed to stomp one foot over many areas of the floor as if he or she is trying to squish la cucaracha. For those of you know don't know what a cucaracha is, it means cockroach. This is the second time Hayley and I have done that dance since we have been ... read more

Today at 9:30 AM was the first day of my three week intensive Spanish course. Hayley and I got up and took first day of school pictures for our mothers back home. We went to school an hour early to get a chocolate pastry for breakfast. It was heaven! The rest of the day was a bit more rocky for us. In the few days that we have been in Cadiz, we all feel like our Spanish has improved so much because we have been talking with our host families non-stop. Unfortunately, when we took placement tests this morning, our confidence was shattered. We tested at one level lower than we expected we would, but had the option of staying in the higher level if we wanted to. It sounds like it isn't that big of ... read more

Yesterday was a difficult day. I felt a little homesick in the morning, but a day at the beach cured that right away. My roommate and I met the other 6 people in our group at the beach after lunch at 3:30. The water was more beautiful than anything I ever imagined. The water is turquoise and a little green. The beach we live near is called La Coleta. It is one of the smaller beaches in Cadiz, but I have a feeling it will be my favorite. The water is warm, and the temperature was in the low 80s. At 8:30 PM we watched la puesta del sol (the sunset) at the beach and words cannot describe how beautiful it was. There were three brides having their wedding pictures taken on the beach. For dinner, ... read more
