Whew, I'm not sure what I am more exhausted from... the half day traveling on a hot, dusty bus, the +40c days or the effort it takes to be really, really, I mean Noble-ly, silent. And I do mean noble with a capital "n"... no talking, no making eye contact, hand gestures, writing notes. No communication with the outside world, no reading, no writing, so outside food... pretty much no anything that could serve as a distraction from focusing the mind and body on vipassana meditation. Sitting meditation... for hours... and hours... and hours; sometimes without opening arms, legs or eyes for an hour at a time. Sound grueling? At times it was... the discomfort in my upper back from an entire career at a desk, agony in my hips, the numbness in my feet... The ... read more

beeep..... I can't believe I am leaving the hippy traveler, ocean-side paradise of Verkala so soon! We arrived yesterday afternoon in time for an early dinner, to find Emily new less posh (and spendy) digs and to catch stunning arabian sea sunset. This place reminds me a little of a california beach town with the cafes, hippy white folks, funky shops and rolling ocean. We stayed our last night of the booked tour at a very nice bungalow styled hotel.. clean and stylish. Emily reflected that although we've been joking about our experience of India being the 'princess tour' (guides/car & driver/pre-booked accommodations), we have definitely been off the path beaten by the average traveler. Verkala and Amma's ashram were the first places we have encountered a mostly foreign population. Mostly we have been in areas ... read more

Let's see.. where did I leave off last? at the beach in Kochi... and where do I find myself now? at the beach in Verkala! The sw coast of India has some great beaches (even if bikini clad westerners are a spectacle to the locals). Between one beach and the next we've had some lovely adventures! I use the term 'lovely' in a loose optimistic tone.... as in 'lovely cockroach in the bathroom!' and 'lovely kingfisher beer at the cliff side cafe'. We drove from Kochi ~4 hrs to Karunagapally. I think after 4 day's I can actually pronounce Karunagapally. The local language, Malyalam, is unique to the state of Kerala. The bits of Hindi (for the north) and Tamil (for the SE) are virtually useless here. So we entertain the locals as we try to ... read more

Yesterday (after a leisurely morning... ahh, the joys of independent travel), we made our way up the coast ~ 30 km to Cherai Beach. The narrow road winding through villages and past temples and churches, landed us the on the edge of the south Arabian Ocean, Lackshadweep Sea. The water was amazingly warm and I swam as long as I could before the interest of dozens of indian teenagers ushered me back to the privacy of our tiki hut, beach towel and book. A few more pics... Today we head south to hugging Amma's ashram for a couple days... going to miss the beach and seaside. It would be very easy to spend more time here! ... read more

Well, the 2 week group yoga tour came to an end in Chenni on the 9th. It really was a remarkable whirlwind experience. There were 9 participants, a guide and yoga teacher. The group dynamics were easy and it seemed the common thread of yoga kept us connected and grounded even when the craziness of India was happening. We traveled a lot, saw a lot of beautiful cultural sites, stretched our selves yoga with the fun and enlightened guidance of our yoga teacher, Christin Sell. There were definitely some shocking and exhausting times.... the chaos, poverty and garbage of the biggest cities... the abrupt 3:30a end to a train ride that got us only half way to our destination, Varanasi and the resulting 9 hr local bus ride necessary to complete the trip.... the deep devotional ... read more

Aliright so im not in France, but this as close as one can get in India. Ponducherry is a charming smaller (only 1 million) town that still reflects it's French colonial history. The architecture, food, books and french language presence lend a European feel that is skewed to India by honking tuktuks and men peeing one the streets.(halmarks of India!) We spent the morning on a very hot beach on the bay of Bengal and an afternoon of navigating the only moderately chaotic streets and shops. I confess to having given up early and retiring to the peace of the hotel courtyard with an iced coffee and novel. The book I picked up at a book sales last night where the were selling hundreds of 'surplus' american books for 150 rupees...about $ 3.75 ... About the ... read more

I am feeling a bit remiss in my blogging. Yet as I glaze out the window at the bright sun and lush foliage of the south Indian country-side, I can't help but wonder... what the heck am I doing inside on the computer!?! Don't be too envious our current location, an eco-spa near Tiruvannamalai (don't worry I couldn't say it either) is a welcome departure from the rest of India. It has been a wild ride which I intend expound on more when the pool is not beckoning so earnestly. The Reders Digest version is that we landed in New Delhi Jan 25 and spent a couple days completely bombarded and overwhelmed by the chaos, filth and poverty. We ate, shopped and wandered about the Karol Bagh neighbourhood. We visited the National Gandhi Museum where he ... read more

hello! I just wanted to tell you i arrived safe and sound after two long but uneventful flights. my express tour in london was fun... my fav was Big Ben... have some nice 'tourist' shots:) india is... dirty, hostpitable, chaotic and fascinating. i'm grateful to be starting my trip in an organize tour. Gen, an texas woman who has been in india for ~6 yrs, is our guide and an invaulable source of information and it is grounding to know someone is looking out for our welfare.... and knows how to rangle with the tuktuk (motorized rickshaw) drivers. Emily and I who are both staying longer are always watching Gen picking up tips that will be useful later on! The tour group consists of 9 canadians (vancouver/victoria/calgary), Gen and Christine, the yoga teacher who joins us ... read more

My inaugural blog post in London (as best as I can remember it as I ran out of time just as I hit 'publish')... En route from Vancouver to Delhi, I enjoyed a 10 hour layover in London. Ok, enjoyed is a bit liberal as pacing around the airport drinking coffee trying to stay awake so I can sleep on the next red eye doesn't really constitute one of my most enjoyable moments... but my express tour of London was indeed enjoyable! I took the underground into the city where I emerged at the steps of the Ritz. Enamored by the intriguing architecture that permeates every building, I wandered about until I found my bearings. The route recommended by the tourist guy consisted of Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abby, 'the eye' and back around to Trafalgar Square ... read more
