The Saguaro National Park is a great park. It is actually divided into 2 different section, East and West, with Tucson in between. The name for the park comes from the Saguaro cactus, the AZ state plant. No matter how many times I would walk the trails of the park (either one), I never got tired of seeing those huge and very old cacti. I couold get to Saguaro East in about 15 or 20 minutes from our apartment. My favorite time to walk there was early in the day, or just before sunset. The plants and animals were always rewarding one way or another and the silence I found there is never to be forgotten. I will never forget my many walks there in desert hills.... read more

This was a fun day trip about an hour south of Tucson on HWY 19. It is a cool artist colony with many interesting shops, art pieces, and artists to see. There is also the ruins to a very old mission here.... read more

We took one day to drive up the road to Mt. Lemon. We went as far as you can drive (about 27 miles) and enjoyed it alot. The road leaves just NE of Tucson and goes from about 2500 ft elevation up to over 8000 ft. The views out and down to Tucson and all around are fantastic! Not many tourists the day we went because it's winter (Feb 5). But come summer this is an extremely popular place to go and cool down form the deseert heat. And they even have a small ski lift at the end of the road.... read more

Located to the NE of Tucson are Sabino and Bear Canyons. These canyons or at the base of the Catalina Mountains and were only about 8 miles from our apartment. They are part of the National Forest and are a lovely place to hike, walk, animal and plant watch, rest, and learn. I (& we) enjoyed many hours walking and riding (tour buses up Sabino Canyon and to Bear Canyon) in these canyon. They have small seasonal rivers that attract wildlife. For those living in Tucson, they are a very convenient place for a before and after work jog or stroll.... read more

Birds love water! This is even more true for water birds..........no water = no water birds. Sweetwater has water. And even though it is reclaimed water from the sewage treatment plant accross the street, it water and the birds love it. Not only water birds, but all kinds. I (& we) spent several hours on different days watching and photographing these birds. Hint: pick a day that the breeze is blowing the sewer plant smell the other way!... read more

I visited this wild animal park 8 times during our stay in Tucson. The attached photos are all taken in this preserve and the 8 visits. The most interesting part of the park is the twice daily Free Raptor Flight. The hawks and owls photos I've included are captive birds, but are givien "free flight" during this program. I never tired of trying to catch the "perfect" shot. I have not yet tried to organize these photos into any order. Nor have I taken the time to name the animals shown. Maybe sometime........ read more

We've had a great winter here in S. TX. But with the coming of Spring along this beautiful portion of the Gulf Coast, and the realization that we have about 2700 miles to drive to get home, we figured it was time to go. Besides the fact that this is the time that this area becomes over-run with students on Spring Break, the warm weather was making me wish for yet just a touch of winter. Well, we are home now and we are getting that "touch of winter". The winter's storms have done their damage to the trees around here and I will find my next week or so cleaning up. It's good to be home and it's good to have many great memories and pictures of a fun winter. And now for the summery. ... read more

(Some of you have told me that you never realized that there are additional photos on most all the blogs. You must click on the first picture, it will enlarge , and the you will be able to click on the arrow under the picture pointing to the right to go to the next photo. There are 34 photos in this posting. ENJOY!) We've been here at Corpus Christi, Texas, for 6 weeks and we have 2 to go. I am making one blog to cover these last 6 weeks. It covers some of the main things I've seen , or see regularly. Every day I start out with a nice walk about sunrise. This walk is usually from 2 1/2 miles up to 6 miles. I always have a camera with me and many of ... read more

It was a month ago that I posted my last blog. During this time Susie and I have been here living in Corpus Christi. We've rented a small condo unit and will be here till early March. As I have said throughout our winters' blogs, we are amateur bird-watchers. I also said in my last blog that I would try and put together a few pictures that I have taken of some of the birds that we have seen down here in S. Texas. These pictures are of wild birds only (no zoo shots) and are only a "smattering" of shots that I have taken while out bird watching. I wish I had a longer telephoto lens with me this winter. But since I didn't bring anything bigger than 300mm, I had to do some pretty ... read more
