Sunday 23rd July 2006 Did more blogging and went to the Arts Centre as they have a arts, crafts and food market on the weekends. There are food stalls from all over the world - I went for a Souvlaki - very nice! Then watched a man with a tiny dog wearing a pink tutu. The dog was very clever! It had its own little scooter and did all sorts of tricks. When someone threw down a penny it would pick it up and put it in it’s owner’s collection hat. But sometimes it would keep it for itself and put it in it’s own mini hat on the back of it’s scooter LOL was really funny to watch! I got the bus to Methven from the Christchurch Cathedral Square, about two hours later we were ... read more

Sunday 16th July 2006 In the words of the Kaiser Chiefs: "Oh my god I can't believe it I've never been this far away from home"... I made it! I'm in New Zealand, and about as far as I can possible get from Yarnton... I have an exciting feeling about being here - all the rest, Vegas, Hawaii and Fiji were just nice places (Maui being VERY nice) to visit on the way to somewhere - to here! I got a transfer bus from the airport to the city centre. I started to feel very happy and almost 'at home'. Nice friendly people, driving on the left, roundabouts, familiar cars and architecture (although a lot of cold wooden houses here), trams, over-looked by hills, near the sea, a huge park, free buses, not too busy (traffic ... read more

Sunday 9th July 2006 At 5am I awoke and watched a glorious sunrise over the sea, through the window of our Bure, while still laid in bed. After breakfast we had to board the transfer boat to take us to the Yasawa Flyer catamaran, which took us on to our next destination - Manta Ray resort. The transfer boat took us round to the other side of the island, to the Blue Lagoon, where we waited with a few other resort boats for the Flyer. While we were there I could see two kite surfers just off the beach of an island South West of us. I had wanted to kite surf in Fiji but not found anyone who rented out there - so assumed it was private individuals. When we arrived at Manta Ray resort ... read more

Friday 7th July We landed at the resort and I was given bed number 202 - which as it turns out was exactly the same number given to a German girl. Didn't think she was up for sharing a bed - hadn't even bought her a drink!!. So went back and asked for a new bed number. Seems the dorms were full so I got a Bure (small little house - usually for couples/families), but had to share with two other German girls - with only two beds! Seems I was destined to sleep with a German girl! ;-) They had the double I had the single and all was good. This resort was a lot bigger than the previous ones. On the other shore was the famous Blue Lagoon used in the film of the ... read more

Wednesday 5th July Had breakfast and said goodbye the friends I had made on the Wana Taki. Also picked up my $98 bar tab :-( I got on the Yasawa Flyer (catamaran) and stood at the front, right on the bow as we raced across to the next island. We then got a really fast speedboat transfer to the Sanawai resort, stopping at the nearby village on the way for the guys to pick up their lunch... He came back with a single can of corned beef - the lunch for the pair of them... The resort is pretty small (only seven people) and relatively new. Met up with two guys I had chatted to on previous islands - Adam and Wayne. Turns out they are from Bicester! Just down the road from home and had ... read more

Monday 3rd July I got a transfer boat to the Wana Taki, which is a big old ferry converted to sleep about 30 travellers. It has a bar, three meals a day (plus morning and afternoon tea!! LOL), kayaks, snorkeling gear, DVD player, air-con sleeping deck, HOT showers and you can jump in the sea from the top deck!! :-) I met Jim and Abby - a really nice couple. We got a welcome drink and then got to eat lunch - and it was fantastic! Especially after the food at Kuata!! We went out in a little boat to snorkel with manta rays. As we approached the channel where they feed we saw a fin come out of the water - looked like a big shark, but it was actually a wing tip of a ... read more

Saturday 1st July We were awoke by the breakfast 'drums' (they play wooden drums on all the islands to announce the start of some activity or meal). I had another nice breakfast and packed my bag - I was moving on today. I then realised my camera charger didn't work anymore. I think it was overloaded as I left it plugged in over night and there was probably a 'power spike' when the generator was started again in the morning. Not good as I would not be anywhere near somewhere that might sell a replacement for about 3 weeks! I decided no more beer in Fiji - it was a waste of time - you just can't get drunk on it. Same for the rum n coke and whisky n coke - all come in poxy ... read more

Thursday 29th June: I was up at 6.30am, trying not to wake the other eight people in my dorm. I went and showered I realised I was about to embark on the most remote part of my trip so far and had just run out of shower gel and deodorant! Arse! So, no internet access for three weeks - means no contact with distant friends and no shower gel or deodorant - means no making of 'close' friends either!! LOL To top it all of, it is raining heavily. Not having a good start to Fiji... I went down for breakfast, I saw on the menu 'Full Fijian Breakfast', which was like a Full English. "Mmmmmm, yes please" I thought. I went to reception to get my breakfast ticket (you get a free 'Awesome breakfast' with ... read more

Monday 26th June 2006: I had to get up early to pack and get myself to the airport for my flight back to Honolulu. I rushed around saying goodbyes, grabbing email addresses and giving away my food (ate out too much!). Bumped into Holly and Anne again when I got to the airport, as they rushed to get their flight. The flight was fine & I got the shuttle bus back to the Polynesian Hostel Waikiki - my snowboard bag was still there :-) I backed up my photos to CD and then it was time to meet a local (Holly) for a few drinks in Waikiki. I was to meet her at the pier and stood watching the crazy boogie boarders riding waves, just feet from a large concrete breaker. I looked up and down ... read more

It was the weekly Sunday tour trip to Big & Small Beach for a chilled-out afternoon. Me and Mat headed straight over to Small Beach and I did some cool body surfing - really getting the hang of it - who needs a board!?! I even went commando (well, when in Rome, etc) - who needs a board.. and who needs shorts!? Met some ‘Brits’ who had just got to Maui and had been in South East Asia. They told how they had been ripped off badly in Cambodia, crossing the boarder. Huge long delays crossing, the bus breaking down repeatedly, the driver insisting on only dropping them at his family's hostel, told to exchange their Thai bar for Cambodian cash (and loosing 30% of their money in the process) and all this was from a ... read more
