Monday 28th August 2006 I left Dunedin on the Stray bus heading north for Christchurch. A compulsory stop was a visit to the Moeraki Boulders. These strange orbs of stone are a unique oddity. The small cafe nearby tries to collect money from visitors with a conveniently placed 'payment' box, but it is actually free to visit the 'balls'. They are a real marvel, but only for a few minutes. We are soon back on the road heading north. We got to Christchurch and I dumped my bag at Coachman hostel (the one I had stayed at before - very clean and tidy and nice people) and caught up with my friends from the city. Tuesday 29th August 2006 I went to the Post Office and picked up a package (sent to Post Restante at Christchurch ... read more

Sunday 27th August 2006 I overslept - I had ear plugs because of a snorer and missed my alarm. I awoke at 8am - the time we were due to leave and there was no way I was going to be stranded another day in Invercargill! I don't know how I managed it, but I made it onto the bus! On our route to Dunedin we went via the Catlins, stopping at Curio Bay (good for dolphin spotting in the Summer), see the video here. Also we stopped at a beach with some 150 million old fossilized trees - you could see the details of the bark and twigs, etc. We also stopped for a walk around a lake. On the way back out of the Catlins we hoped to see an 'crazy inventors gallery' - ... read more

Saturday 26th August 2006 I was due to try to go to Milford Sounds again, but the road was still closed due to the avalanche and there was a good chance to road out Te Anau could go the same way. So I decided I would miss out Milford this time and not risk getting stuck at Te Anau. So the Stray bus took us south towards Invercargill. But first to Bluff - the most southern town in New Zealand. It is famous for it's Oysters and has a seafood festival once a year that must just about keep the place in business, as right now it looks very dead. We go for a walk (I run most of it) through bush and along the coast. I remember feeling that I had done enough of Strays ... read more

Friday 25th August 2006 I left the excitement of Queenstown and headed south towards Milford Sounds. Unfortunately the road was closed due to an avalanche. So instead we headed straight for Te Anau. Te Anua is a tiny little place next to a huge lake and the starting point for many of the countries best multiday walks. I wasn't stopping to do the walks (didn't have the equipment), but the bonus about staying at Te Anau was that we stayed at a place where we all got our own rooms - so time to catch up some sleep. As I wasn't walking, there wasn't much else to do in Te Anua, I went to a bookshop. I bought Bill Bryson - A Short History of Nearly Everything (they now do the Special Illustrated Edition) which is ... read more

Wednesday 23rd August 2006 We got on the Stray bus and left Franz Josef heading for Queenstown. We stopped off for a walk round Lake Matherson, with it’s mirror image of Mount Cook (highest mountain in New Zealand) in the background. We also stopped off briefly to look at the other glacier nearby - Fox Glacier (where the mints are named after I guess?). We also stopped at a really nice beach called Ship Creek, where I spotted a dolphin. On our way between Hasst and Wanaka there was some incredible scenery - enormous lakes surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Lake Wanka and Hawea were very picturesque - see here and here. When we arrived at Queenstown we booked into one of the biggest and busiest hostels in Queenstown - which had it’s ups and downs. On ... read more

Monday 21st August 2006 We left Barrytown on our way to Franz Joseph. On the way I saw a sign (too fast to get my camera out - as ever!) that made me laugh - “Kum Ho tyres”. But my upbeat frame of mind was soon eroded by the sights of one of the most miserable towns I have ever seen - aptly named Greymouth. We pickup a single traveler who had spent at least one night there - he look miserable too! On our way south from Greymouth, towards Hokitika we come to a long single lane bridge. That single lane has to take two way traffic…and a train line!! I can only assume you give way to the train… I was still marveling over this when I came to another shared rail and road ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » West Coast August 20th 2006

Sunday 20th August 2006 After a shower I stood outside to eat my breakfast, I could hear and see the sea nearby - I like that :-) Barrytown is more of a village, not even that. It is a tiny little place by the sea on the West Coast. But it is has a really nice feel to it and the locals (met all ten or so of them last night in the bar!) are really friendly. Across the road from the bar/lodgings is a little place with a shack out the back. I wander round and meet a really friendly guy called Jimmy. He offers me a cup of coffee - hot water provide from the stove in the middle of the shack. After coffee he is going to teach me bone carving... I sipped ... read more

Saturday 19th August 2006 We were all booked in for a morning sailing trip around the bays of Abel Tasman. With the weather looking very miserable I wasn't very enthusiastic. We all climbed aboard an inflatable boat on a trailer, towed by a tractor. The tractor drove into the eastury until the bota was afloat and we were taken out to meet the catermeran nearby. We met our 'skipper' who looked like he had a heavy night on the beers/pot/pills, had slept on the boat and wasn't too happy to see us. He really couldn't be arsed! After motoring out to a few bays he set up the sails, with beerly enough wind to make any headway. He didn't tell us anything about the area or the boat. That and the fact it was cold and ... read more

Friday 18th August 2006 We caught the 9.30am ferry over to the South Island (Picton); I slept most of it. We headed off from Picton to Abel Tasmin, stopping for wine tasting in the Marlborough Region. I tried everything and bought nothing, in typical backpacker fashion! We stopped off for lunch at the Perilous Bridge Reserve and campsite. It was a really nice stop if you were camping, next to nice lush bush and a river. We got to Old McDonald's Farm at Abel Tasman and had a group BBQ and sat drinking and talking around the fire into the night.... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Wellington August 17th 2006

Thursday 17th August 2006 Had a really good breakfast at the Skotel and then we headed out down south for Wellington. We stopped off at a really nice valley view with flat-top hills all around. Then we stopped for lunch at Bulls, for more Bull-related naming... Antique shop called "irreplacea-bull".... Oh how I laughed... Sure it was all much funnier first time I went through Bulls... When we got to Wellington we went up a hill overlooking th city. On the way I had noticed the signs for the Lord of the Rings Exhibit at the Wellington Te Papa museum, ending 20th August! So as soon as we got our hostel sorted I went straight there and three hours later emerged! The Te Papa has loads of other very interesting exhibits, but after three hours of ... read more
