Europe » United Kingdom » England April 26th 1986

We received a letter from Uncle Tom asking if he could visit us. This was an unexpected surprise. With a new baby we wondered if he knew what he was getting into; especially since Tamara had colic since birth three months earlier, and cried non-stop from 4:30 pm to 4:30 am. But we asked him to come on over. He would fly into Brussels, and visit England with us, then take off by himself to visit his WWII base in Exeter, before flying home from London. 26 April 1986 Saturday. He was due to arrive in Brussels at 7:10 am. However, the airport was socked in so they diverted his flight to London, where they sat on the ground for a couple hours. The flight returned to Brussels, with the fog still in place, but the ... read more

Europe » Germany September 15th 1985

Our next NATO Infrastructure Committee visit was to West Germany. By now Linda was over her morning sickness, and at five months she was showing her pregnancy. This was a good thing for her as the German escort officers were very considerate of her condition. Everywhere we went they found her a seat, and brought whatever she needed to her. 15 September 1985 Sunday. We all met at the Melsbroek Belgian military airbase at 9 am where we then boarded a German military transport aircraft for the short flight to the military side of the Koln-Wahn airfield. We were greeted by our German hosts from the Ministry of Defense. We then boarded buses for a sightseeing tour of Bonn and the Rhine River towns in the immediate vicinity of Bonn. We were then taken to our ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England August 9th 1985

Buz and Kathy paid us another visit in the summer of 1985. Their previous visit had been in 1978 when we lived in Glan Munchweiler, Germany. 9 August 1985 Friday. We picked them up at the airport and showed them around Brussels and Waterloo. 10 - 11 August 1985 Saturday and Sunday. We spent the weekend in Holland; first stop was Amsterdam and the Rijksmuseum, and then on to Marken and Volendam. We spent the night in a tiny cottage in Volendam. 13 August 1985 Tuesday. I had to work Monday so early Tuesday morning we headed to Brugges on the way to catching the 2:45 pm ferry from Zeebrugge to Dover, England. From Dover we drove to Canterbury to visit the cathedral. We then drove through the Kent countryside to Stone on Oxney where we ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Antibes July 20th 1985

It had been several years since we had taken a holiday in Antibes, so we took a week vacation to return to one of our favorite places in Europe. Many say the Nice is nice; and most tourists tend to use Nice as their travel hub for the French Riviera. But for us Antibes is nicer...indeed, the nicest! We drove down from Brussels on Saturday, 20 July 1985 and returned home on Sunday, 28 July 1985. We stayed at our favorite hotel, the Royal, right across from our favorite beach, and at the edge of the old town. Our routine for the week was to spend the mornings on the beach. Then after lunch we would drive to Cannes, Monte Carlo, and other coastal town, or St Paul de Vence, Grasse, and other hilltop towns. In ... read more

Europe » Belgium » Walloon Brabant » Waterloo June 17th 1985

As mentioned previously, Waterloo is also a suburb of Brussels, to the south of the city, and only about a twenty minute drive from our home in Overijse. We would visit there quite often as it was on the way to the PX and commissary at Chievres (which coincidently is where the squadron that evacuated Dalat School in April 1965 is currently stationed in support of SACEUR). Also, our favorite Thai restaurant was located on the north side of Waterloo. In June 1985 we had the priveledge of witnessing the reenactment of the Battle of Waterloo in commemoration of the 150th anniversary. My Mom and Dad were with us, as they were on their way back to Thailand after an emergency health trip to the States. Again, enough text. Here are the pictures.... read more

Europe » Norway June 1st 1985

1 June 1985 Saturday. The committee members, the NATO International Staff, and their spouses met at the military side of Zaventum airport to catch a C-130 cargo plane to Gaardemoen Air Base just north of Oslo. There we refueled for another long flight to Tromso, high above the Arctic Circle in northern Norway. It is as far to fly from Oslo to the North Cape as it is from Oslo to Rome. Tromso is near the North Cape. We arrived late afternoon, but it could have been early afternoon judging by the sun's height above the horizon. We enjoyed walking around this seaport town during its best season, with 24 hours a day of sunlight. 2 June 1985 Sunday. We started the day with the official tour of Tromso. We got to know our escort officer ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Lake Geneva May 16th 1985

My sister Sue, my nephew Brendan and niece Alyssa, and her mother-in-law Vovo came for a visit in the Spring following our move to Brussels. After a few days with us visiting sights in Brussels, we decided to drive through France to Switzerland and back through Germany and Luxembourg. We took my youngest sister Carol as far as Paris. Linda decided to stay home, as there wasn’t room in the car. Upon our return from Switzerland, Linda had some great news for us. After digesting the news we visited Brugges, Belgium, and Keukenhof, Marken and Volendam, the Open Air Museum and Madurodam in Holland. Linda joined us for this later portion of our vacation. 16 May 1985 Thursday. Carol joined us for the drive to Paris where we dropped her off with friends. She joined us ... read more

Europe » Netherlands April 20th 1985

We had been to the Netherlands several times when we lived in Glan Munchweiler from 1977 to 1980. Mostly these trips were associated with business trips. Our most recent trip was perhaps the most in depth; barging along the canals. Our first trip from Glan Munchweiler was in early May 1978 in conjunction with a business trip to northern Germany, with my Mom, just before our trip to France and Switzerland. We stopped in Keukenhof, where the tulip growers of Holland display their tulips. It is a fantastically beautiful park. After we moved to Overijse, Keukenhof was only a couple hours drive so we went there every spring. After visiting the gardens, we would sometimes make a weekend of it and visit other spots in Holland. This included the North Sea beaches near Noordwijk, the National ... read more

Europe » France » Upper Normandy March 30th 1985

Linda, Carol and I joined with my Canadian colleague, Hank, and his wife, Gerlinda, to visit Normandy. Gerlinda’s father was a German soldier who had died of appendicitis the year before the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944. She had never visited his grave. 30 March 1985 Saturday. We drove southwest from Brussels to Rouen, France where we stopped for lunch and visited the Rouen Cathedral and the place where Joan D’Arc had been burned at the stake. We then continued on to Honfleur, the picturesque seaport at the mouth of the Seine River. Honfleur was a favorite spot for Impressionist painters Courbet and Monet. We walked around this quaint seaport town that had been a hot spot during the Hundred Years War between England and France. We then drove along the Normandy coast and cut ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Toronto February 2nd 1985

I previously blogged about celebrating Grandpa Northcott's 95th birthday in conjunction with Christmas of 1981. His actual birthday was February 4th, so I decided to honor him on this significant occasion by flying to Toronto to join the party. I was surprised that Mom had the same idea...I didn't know she would be there until we met at the party! Grandpa's favorite game was Scrabble. I challenged him to a game and he won...not using any words that were not in the dictionary, and with me trying my hardest. His mind was still very sharp at 100 years of age. I just hope I inherited his longevity gene. He passed away at 101. I returned to Brussels on February 10. Mom stopped over in Brussels from February 16 - 19 on her way back to Thailand. ... read more
