Europe » Switzerland » North-West November 26th 1980

For Thanksgiving 1980 we joined several from my previous office in Ramstein on a ski trip to Wengen, Switzeralnd. We took along a turkey and fixings which Linda and another wife cooked as they were not skiers. We took the cog railway to Kleine Scheidegg and from there chairlifts to the entire mountain. The weather and snow conditions were perfect. I remember riding the chairlift with the air sparkling with ice crystals and the snow so deep it covered almost to the top of the smaller pine trees. The sky was cobalt blue and all the mountains were spread out before me. I was in awe of God’s creation. I tacked the beginner and intermediate trains, and then gained enough confidence to take on powder. What a terrific sensation of floating across the deep snow! In ... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin September 13th 1980

In September 1980 I attended a conference in Berlin, and decided to take Linda along. To get there by car we had to pass through East Germany, which required flag orders under the agreement that partitioned Berlin into four zones, one each for the US, UK, France and the Soviet Union. The Soviets were required to grant access to the other three countries forces following the Berlin Blockade. Crossing the border was interesting. We had to give our passport and papers to the Soviet border guards, not to the East German guards. We then had two hours to reach West Berlin. We could only drive on the autobahn that went directly to Berlin, which was built by Hitler and had not been maintained since. If we didn't arrive in Berlin within two hours they would come ... read more

Europe July 1st 1980

Our major trip in 1980 was with my parents and Carol, who were on their way from Thailand to the States for furlough. In late June 1978 my Mom and sister Carol, who just graduated from Dalat School, arrived at Frankfurt airport where we met them and drove home to Boblingen. My Dad left Bangkok at the same time as they did, but stopped in India before continuing on to Germany where he arrived in early July. We spent a few days touring around the Stuttgart area before heading to Switzerland. 6 - 8 July Sunday to Tuesday. We drove to Weisstannen, Switzerland where we stayed for a couple of days at the same hotel as we did in 1974. We hiked the mountains, toured nearby Buchs Castle and the tiny country of Lichtenstein, and did ... read more

Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Boblingen March 1st 1980

From 1 March 1980 to 13 July 1984 we lived in Boblingen near Stuttgart Germany. I was offered a job as Technical Advisor at the headquarters of the U.S. European Command at Patch Barracks in Vaihingen, on the southern outskirts of Stuttgart. So on 1 March 1980 we packed up our possessions and drove from Glan Munchweiler to Stuttgart. We lived in a hotel in Vaihingen until we found an apartment in Boblingen, a ten minute drive on a forested road from Patch Barracks. Our apartment occupied the second floor and a Yugoslav family, whose husband worked at the Mercedes Benz factory, was on the first. Our landlady lived on the third floor. She only spoke the Schwabian dialect of German. So that we could communicate with her, we took another conversational German course, but gave ... read more

Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Antibes July 21st 1979

In July 1979 Uncle Wayne and Aunt Minnie came to visit us. Uncle Wayne’s sister Neva was with them. We picked them up at Frankfurt. Unfortunately, the airline had lost Uncle Wayne’s luggage so we stopped at the PX at Rhein Main Air Base to pick up a few items of clothing. During their stay with us we visited Triffels Castle where Richard the Lion Hearted was held for ransom on his way back from the Crusades. Then they joined us for the first part of our summer vacation. 21 July 1979 Saturday. We drove from Glan Munchweiler to Ulm where we climbed the steeple to get a magnificent view of the town and surrounding countryside. From there we continued south to Neuschwanstein Castle for the castle tour. We finished the day at Garmisch where we ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Lower Egypt » Cairo January 4th 1979

4 January 1979 Thursday. We had an interesting flight from Bangkok. We were seated in the last row, so the seats wouldn't lean back, and on an overnight flight that makes sleeping even harder. Some of the passengers were also interesting. There was a Jewish doctor and his wife from New York. He had many non-traditional solutions to our medical problems. For an upset stomach he recommended putting our stomach over the back of the seat and bouncing up and down. Anyway, we arrived in Cairo about 9 am, and took a taxi to our hotel. It was supposed to be a good hotel, but the elevator didn’t work and there were other maintenance issues. Just the month before that elevator had fallen and killed a number of Russians who were in it. Linda was too ... read more

Asia » Thailand December 20th 1978

20 December 1978 Wednesday. Following a stopover in Kuwait, we arrived in Bangkok. Miraculously Linda's malaria fever had broken; or maybe we couldn't measure it since the air temperature was also very hot. Nevertheless, she felt much better. To be safe we spent the rest of the day relaxing at my parents' home. As my Dad was pastor again for the Evangelical Church of Bangkok on Soi 10 Sukhumvit Road, which he had founded in the mid '60's, we stayed in the parsonage. It was great to be back in Thailand; the first time we had visited since our departure in July 1975. 21 December 1978 Thursday. Before Christmas we had time to go to Hua Hin for a couple of days on the beach. My parents, Wayne and Aunt Minnie, my sister Judy and her ... read more

Middle East » Jordan December 16th 1978

Our other major trip for 1978 was to Thailand to be with my parents for Christmas. The cheapest flight there was Alia Royal Jordanian Airlines which had us stopping over in Amman. We decided to extend the stopover for a few days so we could see the major tourist attractions. 15 – 16 December 1978 Friday and Saturday – Friday night we flew from Frankfurt arriving in Amman, Jordan on Saturday morning. We relaxed the rest of the day, walking around Amman and making arrangements for tours on the next two days. 17 December 1978 Sunday. We took a taxi with a guide first west from Amman to Mount Nebo where Moses looked towards the Promised Land, but was prohibited from entering. The guide picked up some square stones that he said was the remains of ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Prague November 24th 1978

In November 1978 we decided to take a train trip for Thanksgiving weekend to Prague with Milt and Mary, a couple from the base chapel. We took the Friday night train from Frankfurt and crossed the border near Hof. I remember being woken in the middle of the night with the Czech border guards searching under and through the train and having our passports stamped. We arrived in Prague, Czechoslovakia early Saturday morning and took a taxi to our hotel to check in. Then we walked to the Old Town Square to watch the clock strike the hour and all the figures in motion. It was a rainy day, so I had my umbrella tucked under my arm. I accidentally poked a man with the tip and he reacted as if he had been stabbed; before ... read more

Europe » Austria » Salzburg October 13th 1978

In October 1978 Linda and Bob attended a weekend church retreat with Steve and Kay and their boys in Berchtesgaden, in the German Alps just across the border from Salzburg, Austria. We stayed at another AFRC resort, the General Walker Hotel, which was used by Hitler’s elite guard force when he stayed here. We took a tour of the bunkers under the hotel. We also explored the surrounding countryside, to include the salt mines, the Ramsau church, and the Konigseesee, where we took an electric boat to an onion domed chapel on the far end. The mountains were those seen in the opening scene of the “Sound of Music,” and were just so beautiful with the first snowfall of the season. We also went to Salzburg to see where the "Sound of Music" was filmed.... read more
