The Condoriri Massif Last monday Sergio brought us up to the Condoriri Mountains with his Landcruiser. We planed to spend five days up there to climb and acclimatize. I was in the same area two years ago with Sergio and really liked it. It´s a beautiful place and you get mountain climbs in many different grades. We all decided to climb Pequeno Alpamayo as the first mountain on thuesday. 4 of us did the normal route while Hilde and Oeyvind went for the direct route up a 250 meter face. Starting at 4 in the morning we thought we had plenty of time. But the altitude and the size of the groupe slowed us down a bit, so we arrived back in camp around 5.30 in the afternoon. A long but great start of the climbing ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department June 25th 2010

Mountain biking around Sorata The main reason we went to Sorata was to join a bike and boat trip with Andean Epics. I met Travis who runs this company when I was travellling in South America two years ago, and I did the full trip from Sorata to Rurrenabaque (http://www.travelblog.org/South-America/Bolivia/Beni-Department/Madidi/blog-275141.html). This time we only had time to do half of it and go back to La Paz from Guanay. Because of a traditional fiesta for the locals in Bolivia on monday, the trip didn´t start before tuesday this week. We chose to warm up for the trip with some biking around Sorata on monday. The area is perfect for long downhill rides with starting point at 4800 meters and plenty of dirt roads and singeltracks to choose from. We started off with a valley stretching down ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » Sorata June 21st 2010

...at least in Bolivia according to many Sorata is a beautiful place and if not heaven on earth, at least a great place to spend some days if you are in Bolivia. With Illampu in the background and the jungle right down in the valley it´s not a coincidence that many guidebooks describe it as one of the most beautiful places in Bolivia. After nearly a week in La Paz it was great to get in to this town where everything is "tranquilo". We decided to go for a walk towards Laguna Chillata on Saturday. This is on the way up to Illampu and probalby the most popular walk in the area. We headed off without map or guide, pretty confident that this was an easy walk. We cut off a few altitude meters by taking ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz June 16th 2010

Back in Bolivia! I´m back in Bolivia after two years! And it feels great. So far just in La Paz, but it´s plenty to do here, and loads of impressions to let sink in! Last time I was in Bolivia I loved La Paz, Eirin feels the same. She was amazed by the city and the first impression when we arrived. We´ve been here since saturday now, and the days has went quick. The first days you have to take it slow anyway to get acclimatized. Sunday was spent walking around in La Paz. In the main street they had closed the road for traffic and put up an festival. Loads of locals in the streets and plenty of different stuff going on. Seems like they are doing this quit often and with different themes. After ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Arequipa June 11th 2010

Arequipa Neither Eirin or I are big fans of easy travelling. So on our way from New York to La paz we spent one night in Panama airport, one night on the bus from Lima to Arequipa, and then one night on a bus from Arequipa to La Paz. But with the standard of the seats at the airport, and the buses in Peru, it´s just a pleasure to travel like that... eh, almost... We had a day in Arequipa thoug. And like last time I was there, we visited a museum which contain a frozen girl found at a volcano in Peru. She was offered together with three other kids to the gods. This was a normal procedure by the Inca´s. The body was well preserved when she was found, and has therefor given the ... read more

North America » United States » New York » New York » Manhattan June 9th 2010

New York City Ok. I´m back on track! For those of you that haven´t been updated on this travel yet, I will give you a short resume. Eirin, a friend of mine, has taken a year off from her work to do some travelling around the world. When she was mentioning South America I got interested since I was travelling down there two years ago. And of course it had to end up with me joining her for a few weeks. Or, actually seven weeks... So now we are on the road again starting with New York for 4 nights, then a flight to Panama and transfer to Lima. We had to spend one night at the airport in Panama... Not much to write about. By the way: I would recommend everyone going to the States ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Coast Province » Watamu March 17th 2009

Mombasa & Watamu As you probably see, I don't write as much now as I did in south america last year. The first part of this travel was studies, and I didn't feel that it was much to write about. The second part is like a short holiday. And this time I didn't really find the good feeling about writing. (the internet down here has not been as good as in parts of south america either...) But I give you a few photo's anyway. Maybe they can inspire you ; ) ... read more

Africa » Kenya » Central Province » Mt. Kenya March 10th 2009

Mt. Kenya The main reason I went over to Kenya after the studies in Tanzania, was to hook up with Lars, a friend from Norway, and do some climbing at Mt. Kenya. We arrived Nairobi on tuesday 2nd of march, and planned for 12 days in the mountain. A norwegian contact we got in Nairobi helped us out to arrange some practical stuff, and we headed up towards the mountain on thursday. When we arrived McKinders camp at 4200 metres above sea level, Lars got serious headache and it simply wouldn't stop. So after just a couple of days in the mountain we had to turn back down! To bad, because the climbing looked really nice, but it's nothing else to do with altitude sickness than getting down. Before we went to the mountains we booked ... read more

Safari After 4 weeks of studying we finished on friday and went for a safari for three days. We were 10 students in total and two jeeps. We visited 3 different parks which all gave us different experiences. I might write a bit more later, but I think the pictures will tell the most of the story from this trip. Enjoy... read more
