loved the trip commentary! Hey--
Sounds like a really fun trip, and the tuk tuk driver was certainly a bargain. Yes, February 16 is Mohammed's birthday, so it's celebrated throughout the Muslim world. Interesting commentary on how the religions get on--maybe send it to the Israeli and Palestinian leaders!
Welcome back--it's cold and nasty, but the sky gets lighter each day. Look forward to seeing you!

Thank you Thank you once again for your travelogue...It's fun to be transported far away in the comfort of my home. I meant to ask you if you are planning on going back to Berkeley after your travels....
Will look forward to seeing you in the summer in Boston.
Enjoy your stay I'm so pleased to see these familiar places!
Much depends on your guide - we were so lucky (twice). But it's nice you are in such a small group. Just one car. Have fun!
Sri Lanka Hi, Hilary:
Glad the trip is working out after a shaky start. Thanks for these lovely photos and overview of Sri Lanka. It's given me a fine sense of the country.
Enjoy, xx,
Diane
wow Hilary, once again you are amazing! Thank you so much for sharing your journey with us, the
good and the bad. My son always wanted to go to Sri Lanka and so it has always intrigued me.
Hugs and hope to see you soon in Paris.
It'll hurt the tourist industry and people whose incomes depend on it if you did cancel when going to an area where no tragedy hit so that they will be hurt by the flooding too even if it did not happen there. The main thing is that you go and be where you are safe....
Bon Voyage! et COURAGE! Today's the day you're travelling and I just saw a report on CNN that said the southern part of the country was most affected by flooding, which includes Colombo.... hope you are safe and well... and dry! Storm is moving off and rain should stop soon they say. It has suddenly turned warm here in Hanoi, so if you need to make a detour, come ahead!
You are such an intrepid traveller... and never a voyeur!
Hugs,
Elaine
bon voyage Chere Hilary - Best wishes for a safe and satisfying journey. I just finished reading an article on Sri Lanka by Jon Lee Anderson in the New Yorker (Jan 17), "Death of the Tiger." Friends from Innsbruck were there surfing several months ago. Loved the beaches but the cross-island roads to get to them left much to be desired. As always, thanks for news from Paris. We're off to Australia next week for our son's wedding in Brisbane. Now there's a place that's been weather walloped lately! Jack* + Louise
Sri Lanka Just to wish you a wonderful trip. I'm sure you will have a really good time and a voyage of discovery. Look forward to hearing about it when you get back!
