As fast as we came back to Samut Sakhon we left again. We took an overnight VIP bus to Chiang Mai. We really failed though because we thought that we could have this entire area on the bottom of the bus for ourselves but at the last moment they added 6 people to where maybe one or two more could fit. It was a 15 hour bus drive. Not the best nights sleep I've ever had but it was an enjoyable 30 minutes when we were in laughing hysterics because we just couldn't believe that would happen. I've been to Chiang Mai before so I was really excited to see other things that I didn't have time for before. Chiang Mai is where you can take elephant treks, jungle treks, go white water rafting, zip lining, ... read more

This trip to Kanchanaburi was exactly was I needed. I was so overwhelmed with the situation in Samut Sakhon that I was ready to break. There was no time to breath before we were going full force with the school. It was a real blessing to have the King announce a 5 day holiday. Erika and I hurried out of town and made our way to meet a bunch of friends who were in Kanchanaburi. The Bangkok flood has really affected everyone in Thailand, especially in the Bangkok area. On the day before Erika and I were to leave to go back to our school, our director called and told us that due to the flood the school would be cancelled for the next week. This is how it has been for many schools for the ... read more

Due to the flood in Bangkok and its escalating dangers to the people of Bangkok, the king announced a five day holiday so that people can prepare their homes or leave the city. Even my city, Samut Sakhon, received 5 days off school and there are rumors that the water will come through to reach the ocean. As we walked through the streets of Samut Sakhon today, businesses and homes were building sandbag barriers for protection. There is hardly any water left in our city because everyone is stocking up or coming from Bangkok to get some. It's crazy to think that I'm so close to such a natural disaster yet feel really disconnected from it too. After such a stressful week, we were overjoyed to hear about our holiday. I feel bad thinking of it ... read more

The program placed me and two others at a high school in Samut Sakhon teaching conversational English. Samut Sakhon is about a 30 minute drive from the Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal. It being so close to Bangkok, I figured there would be tons to do and see. So before I left Phuket I tried to do some research on the city but could only find two things. One.. that it's a seafood industrial park and two.. people consider it to be the armpit of Thailand. Even though I am not a seafood fan and I heard rumors that it was going to smell like fish everywhere you go I was optimistic about the placement. I was determined to make it work for me. The first few days in Samut Sakhon were really rough. We were dropped ... read more

The last two weeks of my training in Naiharn were jam packed with activity. Besides Naiharn we explored the various areas in Phuket such as Kata Beach, Patong Beach, and Rawai Beach. Each has it's own personality. Kata beach is a family tourist beach where there is always something going on. Patong Beach is known for it's sex industry activities but also is great for a night out on the town. You just have to avoid the ping pong promoters as you walk through the area past 9 pm. Rawai Beach is known for it's very fresh seafood. You can purchase your fish from one side of the road at the fish market and then walk over to the other side to get it cooked up at a restaurant. Apparently, it was delicious. I almost caved ... read more

A part of my three week program to earn my English certificate was to complete five teacher practice lessons at real Thai schools. We had only one night to prepare each lesson and make all materials. The five lessons are all with different students each time and the levels were always different. This gave us a lot of hands on practice before we reach our schools. This way we learned to adapt to our students and actually got a feel for how to teach English. The first school I went to was Ban Sosa, a SOS Orphanage in Phuket. As we approached the school my nerves were very high. I had no idea what to expect and being evaluated made things that much more worse. I had no idea Ban Sosa was a SOS Orphanage until ... read more

Sawatdee Kah!!! (Hello!) So I've been here for a solid week now! It's crazy to think that Thailand is my new home. We are a pretty solid routine with the course. We start at 8 am and end at about 3. We get an hour or so for lunch and two 15 minute breaks as well. The class is very helpful and I'm so glad I chose to go this route with getting my certificate. Our teacher goes through different kinds of lessons we could do with our students and runs through them a bunch with us until they are drilled into our minds. The people in the course with me are all wonderful people. It's really nice to know that everyone who would come to Thailand to take a course like this are all in ... read more

I can't believe I'm finally here! It's been about 3 months of anticipation and now I am here. All my worries that I had before have disappeared. I've been here for 2 days now and so far I am so thankful that I decided to do this! It really feels like an adventure. Thailand is such a beautiful country and with all my worrying before getting here I completely forgot just how beautiful it is. The land is so green and hilly and the water is so blue and powerful. It's a humid as humid can get but I was expecting that. The flight to get here was a long one. I flew from Nuremberg to Dusseldorf and then had a 6 hour layover before my flight to Bangkok. On that flight I ran into the ... read more

This amazing tradition started back in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of prince Ludwig I and princess Therese. Everyone enjoyed the celebration so much they decided to continue it every year and now 201 years later we are still celebrating. Oktoberfest is surprisingly mostly in September because the weather is better. They can still legitimately call it Oktoberfest though, because it will always end on the first Sunday of October. Today, Oktoberfest is known as the world's largest festival. This year there were 14 tents for people to enjoy. Now, when you think tent, this is not your typical festival tent...no, no... these are more like temporary buildings that hold thousands of people at one time! and there are 14 of them!!!! This is just to give you some sort of scope on the scale of ... read more

My flight to Thailand is quickly approaching and my nerves are steadily increasing day by day. The reality of my situation is starting to unfold. Even though I have been to Thailand before I still have this fear at the back of my mind of things that could go wrong: floods, tsunamis, earthquake, etc. I want these thought out of my mind because they are only going to instill fear and doubt. This is why I am venting my fears out loud. Questions: 1. Am I doing the right thing? 2. What is the right thing? 3. Should I have stayed in America/Germany to find work? 4. Will I ever come home? 5. What will I do after this? 6. What if a natural disaster happens like everyone likes to remind me? No one can ever ... read more
