Bright and early start after a big breakfast....I was really anticipating this North Mountain trip thanks to my obsession with seeing Mae Aw (which I will feature in it's own section.) The road was fun-- the infamous Mae Hong Son loop is said to have some sixty hair pin turns per hour. It's legendary in motorcycle circles. I wish I could have done a better job capturing the scenery along the journey, but if I stopped at every photo op, I'd never get anywhere. Fern Resort bills itself as "Eco-tourism." it is set in a rice paddy and the word "lush" doesn't do justice to the environment. Everything is green and fresh and the sound of running water is everywhere. The streams have those marvelous bamboo chimes in them and the birds, bugs and other animals sing along with the "plonk" of the bamboo. The staff are local Shan folks and they are super friendly. The food was delish. Evidently Brangelina stayed there which gives them a cool point with me..... Unfortunately I have noted that when using my iPad to upload photos non of my crops or other edits show, so forgive the occasional finger, dark picture, etc... read more

How stoked was I when I saw my Nok Air prop waiting for me on the Tarmac!After a brief flight I arrived in Mae Hong Son and was immediately captivated. The city is gorgeous.My English speaking guide picked me up at the airport and we drove to Fern Resort so I could throw my bags in a room. It was then time to tackle the first mountain. We drove a washed out, hairpin turn road to a wonderful lookout point and then made our way through the ruts and mud to a White Karon Village.
