Friday I arrived in Cairns. Unfortunately the weather was not very nice. It was raining when we landed and it continued to rain off and on the entire day. I did a few errands but mostly relaxed for the rest of the day. Saturday I went to Kuranda, a small town outside of Cairns. I mainly did this because other than drink and book adventure tours there’s not much to do in Cairns. This time of year marine stingers (a.k.a. jellyfish) are present so swimming in the ocean is not possible. It continued to rain off and on throughout the day Saturday. There’s not much to do about it except deal with it. In Kuranda there is access to the Daintree Rainforest. This is the oldest rain forest in the world. I tried to go on ... read more

This is the Australia I came to see! I got an early start on my first day in the Blue Mountains since I was eager to do some hiking, plus I wanted to enjoy some of the relatively cool morning. Unfortunately I missed the warm glow of the morning sun. The sun was already beating down by 9:30. On a side note the sun here seems brighter than any sun I’ve seen. When the camera was on automatic settings almost every picture I took came out over exposed. So I started at Echo Point where you get a nice view of the Jamison Valley and the Three Sisters. From there I took the Giant Stairway down to the valley floor. Now, they were not kidding about it being a giant stairway. I’m not sure how many ... read more

I spent the day exploring Sydney a little more. I started off by visiting Manly Cove. It’s across the harbor from downtown Sydney. It was really fun because I took the ferry across. It was less fun because it was cloudy and overcast. It rained a little bit too, but only for a few minutes thankfully. Anyway I walked along the harbor for a bit. The ferry also provides good views of the shoreline around Sydney. The shore is sandstone ranging in colors from light tan to dark reddish brown. Layers upon layers of sandstone are exposed. Most of the shore is rocky and very steep; in many places the shore is nonexistent with the land ending in an abrupt cliff. Sydney has a few parks and national parks in it so there is some shoreline ... read more

It still hasn’t really sunk in that I am actually in Australia. Before I talk my first day down under let me fill you in about the flights quickly. It was a long journey! My total travel time was about 23 hours. It took about 4.5 hours to get to LAX, had a 1.5 hour layover there. I ran in to Amethyst Cermo at the Indianapolis airport and she ended up walking with me to my departing gate at LAX. It was kind of nice to have someone there with me because I was already starting to get really tired. Anyway we boarded the plane and just as it seems that we are getting ready to get buckled in and take off some family decided they were going to get off the plane. So we had ... read more

So for New Years 2010 I traveled 4 hours north to Michigan to visit Sarah, a former co-worker and her boyfriend. Now, normally I would be nervous about spending a week with a group of strangers (her friends) and especially since I'm staying with her twin sister, who I have never met before. However, I have heard many stories about Sarah's friends and talked to her sister on the phone so I was not that worried. So I left Indianapolis on Wednesday ready to party for a few days. Well, I knew that Sarah and Chris liked to party, but I wasn't sure what to expect from Sarah's friends. Wow, they are crazy! We have been partying since Wednesday night, and they were partying before I even arrived. For New Year's we went to Club Harem ... read more
