Will you or, by this time, have you taken the tram up Sandia Mountain in Albuquerque??My friend from high school lives sort of at the base of that mountain. She has quite a scenic view from her front yard.
How is Mary's foot??
Hey Daddy!
Yes, it's been an awesome first week! I love you. Thanks for working so hard to let us travel an extraordinary amount.

Hi Anne!
The mariachis were so cool! They played really well, up on a balcony in the downtown area. I really like Santa Fe, everything here is either actual adobe, or the color of adobe, it's a rule they have.
Love,
Ellie
Hi Anne!
Thanks, I never knew what tumbleweed was. I've only heard about it in songs or when people talk about it. We don't see that ever at home!
Love,
Ellie
Ellie, Tumbleweed, according to the dictionary is any of various densely branched annual plants, such as amaranth, that break off from the roots at the end of the growing season and are rolled about by the wind. The picture you have might be one that will break off later and start tumbling around in the wind. Love, Anne
I'm so jealous that you saw the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. She is one of my favorite artists. Isn't Santa Fe wonderful? Did you like the mariachis? You are really having a grand time; that is so cool.
There are weeks, and then there are weeks... 2300 miles, several awesome burritos, torrential rainstorms, many beautiful and beautifully varied sights, beautiful landscapes and sounds, friendly people everywhere you stop. Wow, what a first week!
Hey Anne!
Is tumbleweed a weed or a short plant? I don't think I could spell Albuquerque, unless I looked it up in a dictionary. What's up?
xoxoxo!

Hey Anne!
I love Blue Hawaii! I've never seen the Ed Sullivan Show, but it was mentioned in the musical Bye Bye Birdie that has a character who gets drafted to the war, just like Elvis! Yeah, Elvis' hips were the main part of dancing!

sooner Ellie, I thought you might have learned what a sooner is. Oklahoma is called the Sooner state. I looked it up in the dictionary just now. A sooner is a person who settled homestead land in the western U.S. before the land was officially available. Then, of course, a Sooner is a native or resident of Oklahoma. But, the original definition probably applies to the first people who came to Oklahoma. You asked about Elvis. I didn't listen to a lot of his music. But, I really liked some of his movies - especially Blue Hawaii. I remember seeing him on a television variety show in the 1950s called the Ed Sullivan Show. Because Elvis gyrated his hips so much, the cameras were allowed to show only the top part of Elvis' body - gyrating hips were very controversial in the puritanical 50s.
So jealous! I want to go see H.P. very much but haven't had the time!! Glad you got to enjoy it in the middle of the day - one of my favorite times to go to a movie for some reason!! Did you see any lions or tigers on your "Safari"?
So great to be able to enjoy your trip vicariously! What a neat website, and what a great idea to use it to document your adventures! You're doing a great job of capturing the highlights of your trip, Ellie. I've always wanted to go to Graceland myself. And yes - Route 66 used to be the main road across the US. Did you ever hear of a TV series by that name about the fictional adventures of 2 men traveling that road? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_66_(TV_series) I enjoyed watching that series way back when.
I think you should consider writing a US 50-state Burrito Guide, Ellie. It would be a wonderful thing for other burrito lovers and think of all the wonderful burritos you'd be able to sample! I look forward to your daily updates! Thanks for inviting me along.

What a big day Sounds like you had a full day of activity. You mentioned in a photo caption the long distances with short weeds. When your Uncle Mark lived in West Texas, he sent your Gramps a big box with a tumbleweed from Texas. It probably looked much like the plant in your photo. You know I think I have seen Del's restaurant highlighted on the Food Channel. Your burrito expedition is going quite well, isn't it?
Katie will be coming up here to see you. She arrives late on August 14th and will leave late on August 16th. I know Vanessa has a wedding in there, but that weekend is Katie's only free time and she wanted to see at least some of the traveling party. So there should be a mini-reunion that weekend which will be fun.
Enjoy Santa Fe and Albuquerque (can you spell Albuquerque?). I have a high school friend who lives there. Her former husband is a physicist who worked at the Sandia Labs.
Traveling cross country. Among other things, this will be a burrito exploration trip. That is, mother and daughter will try burritos from different parts of the country, rate them, and pick the best burrito place in the USA. Daddy and Nessa will engage in burrito exploration when they're with us. We hope to have lots of fun.... full info
