Today was a totally rocking day! We ate burritos at this restaurant in Santa Fe called the Bumble Bee's Baja Grill. Mom says "I had a "naked" burrito with asparagus and it was scrumptious!" My burrito had black beans, rice, pico de gallo, and cheese in it. I would give it 9.5 on my official Burrito Scale. I took off .5 because it was a little "too spicy!" It was, like all of the past burritos, perfect in every way imaginable! The restaurant looked really cool inside because there were all of these bumble bee pinatas hanging from the ceiling!

We went to the Palace of the Governors museum. It is a "monumental adobe structure that housed the residence and offices of governors from its construction ca. 1609 until it became the state history museum in 1909." We visited "the museum to learn about 400 years of life in New Mexico in exhibitions and period rooms." We learned about how the Pueblo Indians of this area were first free, then were ruled by Spain, then were free, then were ruled by Spain again, then were ruled by Mexico, then were ruled by the US. New Mexico was actually part of the Confederacy for about 60 days during the Civil War. Did you know that New Mexico wasn't named after Mexico? New Mexico has been around longer than Mexico has been a country! The Spanish had gone down and had renamed the Aztecs' capital Mexico City. Then they started to travel up north to find "New Mexican cities"! While we were there, we saw a real carriage from around the 1840s. It wasn't a replica at all. That was a really fun museum. We also went to the Georgia O' Keefe Museum, where we saw a fair few of her actual paintings. There wasn't any hands-on things, but it was pretty nice to go there.

The house that we are staying at is very beautiful. The person who lives here made it basically by herself with adobe. She is a Quaker artist and doctor. The view is also very lovely. There is a big mountain right near the house. In the backyard is a desert garden that is very nice, with plants that are surrounded by little fences to keep out the animals.

We also saw two natural swimming pools on our way to Santa Fe. They were really cool. One of them, The Blue Pool, in Santa Rosa, is 81 feet deep! It wasn't fun when mom slipped on the stairs and badly bruised her foot, though!

Today was super fun!

There are weeks, and then there are weeks...
2300 miles, several awesome burritos, torrential rainstorms, many beautiful and beautifully varied sights, beautiful landscapes and sounds, friendly people everywhere you stop. Wow, what a first week!

I'm so jealous that you saw the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. She is one of my favorite artists. Isn't Santa Fe wonderful? Did you like the mariachis? You are really having a grand time; that is so cool.

Ellie, Tumbleweed, according to the dictionary is any of various densely branched annual plants, such as amaranth, that break off from the roots at the end of the growing season and are rolled about by the wind. The picture you have might be one that will break off later and start tumbling around in the wind. Love, Anne

Hi Anne! Thanks, I never knew what tumbleweed was. I've only heard about it in songs or when people talk about it. We don't see that ever at home! Love, Ellie

Hi Anne! The mariachis were so cool! They played really well, up on a balcony in the downtown area. I really like Santa Fe, everything here is either actual adobe, or the color of adobe, it's a rule they have. Love, Ellie

Will you or, by this time, have you taken the tram up Sandia Mountain in Albuquerque??My friend from high school lives sort of at the base of that mountain. She has quite a scenic view from her front yard. How is Mary's foot??

Well I did walk some today
I just love getting these blogs and phone calls. I wonder if Whole foods has good burritos. I went to my friend Ginny's church (she was at work) which meant walking up some steepstairs. I didn't much like the service as their beliefs are orthodox Christian but at least I got there. Anne will be coming over and should be able to get over to see the apartment. there are the outside steps. Iloveyou and hope you are having a happy day!

Hey Anne! We didn't end up going up the Sandia Mt. Mom' foot is a lot better, but it still hurts. xoxoxoxoxo Ellie

Ahh! I missed a couple days there - but it looks like other than a wounded toe, you both are doing well! I find it very cool that you went by United World College, one of my best friends went there and loved it - so Ive heard countless stories of the place but no pics of the outside! Im soooooooo jealous of the natural swimming pools, Id probably never get out if I were to get in though - even if I became all wrinkled and prune-y!!

Hey KT! Wow, so cool that your friend went there! Those pools looked very tempting! Can't wait to see you in a few weeks! So much love, Ellie
