Finally, time to play baseball again. Started the day with a little batting practice thrown to me by Johnny Grubb. Of course, I was stopped by a fan for an autograph on the way to the cages. Amazing that the fans show up at 7:30 a.m. just to catch a glimpse of the players. We played three games today. In the first one I went 1 for 1 with a walk. Handled three force outs at second and participated in running down a baserunner between second and third. However, we fell by the score of 8-1 as one bad inning of pitching (walked in three runs) and our ability to hit in the clutch cost us the first game. More of the same was to follow. In game two I struck out and walked. However, the ... read more

Well, last night was autograph night and poker night. I don't collect autographs, but it did seem like a good time to meet some former Tigers and get a couple of momentos signed. So I picked up Willie Horton and Mickey Lolich on one baseball, then the 1984 Tigers on another, and the rest of the Tigers on a third. But my favorite autograph will be on the first photo posted on this blog. While it seems like a long time ago that we actually played baseball, on Wednesday this shot was taken of me diving back into first base to avoid a force out on a caught line drive. I don't know if you can read the note, but I think I told you in an earlier post that when I got back into the ... read more

The rain from the past two days not only washed out last night's game but did in the games today. More bad news, it also means that we will not be playing against the former Tigers in Joker Merchant on Saturday so we can have more games and a play off on that day. But, the rain out led to us being able to hear from two of the Tiger greats....Al Kaline and Willie Horton. Many of you may not know these guys. Kaline (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Kaline) is a Hall of Fame guy who is considered to be the best Tiger ever. When I was a kid we all wanted to grow up to be Al Kaline...every little league team had a battle over who got to wear #6. His stories were great, about being signed to a ... read more

Lucky us, we actually got some baseball in today before the rain started.... I headed over to the training room at about 7:30 this morning for some heat on my back...strained on Thursday before I headed to camp. After the heat, Steve, the guy who does the Dominican and Venezuela camps worked with me. He is into pressure points and all sorts of stuff and after about 20 minutes had me feeling like a new man...I need to get my own personal trainer! OK, not really, but what a treat to have someone who knows how your muscles work figure out how to get you up and going. Then over to the batting cages. Lucky me again, I got in line with Johnny Grubb who is one of the nicest human being I have ever had ... read more

Today the games began. But first a note about last night. We had a dinner that celebrated the 1984 Tiger World Champs. I sat with Juan Berenguer and Billy Scherrer and Dave Rozema (or, as he is known here, "the great Dave Rozema"). Listening to them swap stories and run down each other as they spoke was a treat. This morning I headed over to Tiger Town and started in the training room with a heat pack to loosen up the old back. Then some batting practice before the 'picture day' activities. After photos we hit the fields for our first games. I would love to tell you that I drove in runs, made stellar plays at second, and helped seal a victory. In fact, we lost both games in the final innings and, while I ... read more

Spring Training: Day Four--Partial rain out Today was the first day of camp, and when I got to the locker room, there was my jersey and uniform. How cool was that? After changing into my 'pretend' (aka Fantasy) uniform and taking a few pictures, we had several mini-clinics....unfortunately held inside because it was raining. We heard from Lou Whitaker on infield work, Mike Maroth on pitching, and Darrell Evans on hitting. Then time for some fun. Batting practice was first, and it was started by listening to Willie Horton talk about how to hit. Of course, how he does it versus the rest of the world are two different things. Then my team spent time taking swings and getting tips from our coaches, Mike Maroth and Steve Kemp. After an hour of hitting, we spent time ... read more

Spring Training, Day 3: We left Detroit in a snow storm and arrived in Tampa and caught a bus to Lakeland. Tonight things kicked off with an orientation that included hearing from Lou Whitaker, Willie Horton, Jake Wood, Steve Kemp, Darrell Evans, and more. OK, if you are not a baseball fan that is not going to mean a lot to you, but check out the photos of Jake Wood, Sweet Lou, and yep, that is me with Willie Horton! We then carpooled over to Tigers Spring Training camp and were treated to a barbeque in the same dining room the Tigers eat in during camp. Teams were then announced, I am on Team 1 coached by Jack Kemp and Mike Maroth. Back to the hotel and the parties are on. Hung around telling jokes with ... read more

Day Two of Spring Training. For those of you still following, here is day two of the Fantasy Camp blog. It started with an early morning run to Dutch Girl Donuts which is a place Michael told me about years ago and I try and visit it every time I am in the city. It is one of the many places young Detroiters are trying to keep going, and this place cranks out, right in front of you, the best cinnamon rolls ever to grace your mouth. I picked up some to bring back to Michael and David and if you are ever in the 8 Mile and Woodward neighborhood, stop in--here is a link to reviews of the place (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g42139-d937581-Reviews-Dutch_Girl_Donut_Co-Detroit_Michigan.html). After chowing down on that and a cup of coffee it was across snowy Motown ... read more

So for my 60th birthday my darling wife gave me the most frivolous wish ever, a week at the Detroit Tigers Fantasy camp. Back when I was a kid I wanted to be a Detroit Tiger. But genetics and coordination dictated otherwise and the best I ever did was second string second base at Pinehurst, NC, high school. So, now I get the chance to see what the really good guys get to do. The following is the first installment, I promise some photos in future blogs... The drive to Motown was like driving across Siberia, OK, that is a bit of an exaggeration, but the wind was howling and blowing snow everywhere. But it was fun to be headed north where they have real winters and where kids go to school in spite of a ... read more

Friends and Family (those of you still reading), I know I have been home for five days, but I put off writing this final entry because it seemed to be the end to a wonderful trip. If I did not have such a good family, fine friends, and good job back here I am not sure I would have left Argentina. It is a big land, with a big heart and often a healthy laugh. I will miss it and hope to return. But a few final notes are in order. First, what is the deal with the dogs? They are everywhere, middle of the sidewalk sleeping in the sun on a busy downtown street; following us down a ten mile mountain trail; heck, one met us when we got of a bus in Bariloche and ... read more
