Okay, back on the boat now we are going to...Okinoerabu Island. 10 hours or so and this time we had a the room to ourselves for a few hours and to pass the time we build things out of the pillows, like real life Boom Blox :) After we were sea sick from standing up building massive structures, we went out and heated up our wonderfully not so tasty 1 dollar ramen, half way through our meal someone came up to us asking us where we were from. A bit of conversation later we now had a private tour with a local from Okinoerabu Island. When we got off the boat he was kind enough to drop us off at our hotel to check in and came back a bit later to show us around the ... read more

After Amami, we were headed to Naha,Okinawa. We arrived in the pouring rain with no place to stay. Foutunately enough for us, someone was at the ferry exit to reccomend their guest house with a free ride. The next morning we were lucky enough to have a bright and sunny day to wallk around. Okinawa reminded me a bit of Thailand with many islandy shops and little trinkets. We were sort of over the walking and shopping after the 1st day and decided to hop a ferry to a near by island as a day trip. The island was called Takashiki. 1 hour Ferry ride and a short bus ride and we were transported to a beach. Before enjoying the sun we grabbed a bite to eat at the first place that looked like a resturant ... read more

We were on a boat for 10 hours to the first island Amami. When we got off the boat at 5am we noticed a few people from Switzerland. Their plan was to head to the airport and rent a car, we decided to follow. Once at the airport we hitched a ride in their car and headed to the closest beach. When we got there we were greeted with a sign that said "beware of the many poisonus snakes near by", eek! Once down at the beach we very quickly realised we were going to be the only ones on the beach. We hung out for a while and then decided to hit up another beach. Again the same thing we were the only 4 on the beach, and then just when we were about to ... read more

From Beppu we took an early train to Mt. Aso to stay at Aso Base Backpackers hostel. The people who run this hostel were very helpful and gave us a map of the volcano area and recommended treks to take for the day. We took the local bus to Mt. Aso and road a rail car up to the middle point of the crater. There was a tourist area that many people were at taking pictures, and we decided to take the hikes to get up higher and further away from the people. The Naka Dake point was our destination. It started out as a very easy hike up pre-made stairs and then got a bit steeper, and then became more like rock climbing. At one point we steered off the path and were climbing up ... read more

Beppuuuuu!! as the lady shouted on the train as we got off with an octave tone. We're here, the place that is famous for hot springs and fugu. We arrived at the Kaosan Hostel and immediately met a cool Australian couple, a guy from Norway and another from New York. We proceeded to play Jenga late into the night getting a 31 row Jenga by the end of it, not a bad first night. The next morning we woke up and decided to try a hot spring. The first one we went to was a mud bath called Hoyland Hotspring. We had to take the bus 30 minutes into the mountains until we arrived at our destination. No one there spoke a bit of English and all we knew how to saw was hello and thank ... read more

In Kyoto we stayed with a friend and his grandmother who lived in the heart of Kyoto. We walked around all of the temples in Kyoto and came across a few Geisha's as well. The best photo opportunity that I missed by a few seconds was two Geisha's sitting on a bench with their backs to me with Starbucks sitting beside them. They moved before I got a chance to take the picture. At one temple there was a giant singing bowl that you could walk up to and hit and an awesome sound would resonate through the temple, after watching a few students do this I did as well. Another cool thing that we saw was a giant white mound of paper with a hole in the middle, this was a place where people write ... read more

Tomorrow we are headed to Koyoto so we decided to spend one final day and long night wandering around the city. A friend of mine sent me a link to a cat cafe which is where there are tons of cats all over the place and you can hang out and pet and feed them. We couldn't really read the map and were using land marks like KFC and McDonalds to find this place. Finally we were in the right area because I saw a sign with a cat on it that said Calico Cat Cafe. Sweet! We got in and had to put our shoes and bag into a locker and walked in. Tons of cats were everywhere, most didn't really want anything to do with you until fed them. With food in hand I ... read more

Today we decided to head to Chiba and see a temple that was not in the Lonely Planet guide called Nihonji Temple located in Chiba. The only information we had was head to Chiba, walk 4 minutes to rope-way and it would be right there.. easy enough yea? Once off the train we looked for any information that would be useful and saw a rail car in the distance and headed in that direction. Along the way an old woman sitting near the road tried to help us even though she spoke no english, some how we managed to find it. We purchased a rope way ticket that took us up the mountain and were on our way to the Nihonji Temple. There were many little buddhas along the path but the most amazing one of ... read more

We arrived in Tokyo after a 10 hour flight from Los Angeles pretty Jet lagged and not sure what we were getting ourselves into. We bought the JR Rail Pass in LA in hopes of traveling all around Japan. When we got off the plane we made our way through the sea of people to redeem our Pass and were headed into the city. The guy who gave us our pass even had a map and very clear english directions on where we were headed. It felt like a video game mission. Step 1, get on X train head to Y Train walk 5 minutes to destination. Pretty fun so far. We arrived in Ebisu to meet a friend and had no way of calling him except by getting a phone card and trying to decipher ... read more

This weekend a group of my friends down in LA decided to meet Brad and I in Death Valley for the Surprise Canyon Hike. After the Yosemite Hike I felt like I could conquer anything. This however, was an equally intense hike. Up, up, up for longer with a Pack on. Very very exhausting. The night before we stayed in a little motel 45 minutes outside of the place were were about to hike. We woke early Saturday packed and ready to go. Our first stop lead us to Ballarat Ghost Town. There was a Jail that doubled as a place to stay when they didn't have prisoners, old rusted cars and dilapidated structures. After getting a few cool recordings and wandering a bit we continued to the trail head to begin our hike. I started ... read more
